A new Earth Science Course:

ERSC 4399/5399  “A Sustainable Earth

Wednesdays 9:00 – 9:50 am; Fridays 9:00 – 11:30 am (so we can take field trips!)

Here are the topics of the course (not in any set order…)

  • Introduction to Sustainability 1 week (defining the problems; understanding the language of sustainability; historical perspectives)
  • Natural Environment 2-3 weeks (land; air; water; climate)
  • Built Environment / Energy 2 weeks (fossil fuels/ renewables; power generation and distribution; green construction)
  • Transportation 1 week (mass transit; individualized transit)
  • Materials, Waste and Reduction 2-3 weeks (mining; landfills; recycling; composting)
  • Food and Agriculture 2 weeks (food security/deserts; industrialized/local agriculture; community gardens)
  • Sustainable Solutions2 weeks(individual; community; global)

The work of the class will include:

  • in-class discussions  (active participation required – will be graded)
  • weekly pre-class readings  (will be quizzed – MUST be completed)
  • field trip attendance / reflections  (will be several field trips… probably at least 5-6… maybe more)
  • InTeGrate modules  (used occasionally… may require outside of class work…)
  • impactful term projects (to be determined by individuals / groups based on areas of interest)

The work of this class will NOT include:

  • exams
  • term papers
