Dr. Andrew Wright’s sections of SYEN 1310. Introduction to Systems Engineering engaged in a robotics competition as the final activity in the course. The robotics competition involved two robots versus two robots, constructed from Vex Robotics hardware, playing soccer with a tennis ball. This soccer had a twist, the bottom of the goal counted for 1 point, while the top of the goal counted for 5 points. Matches were 4 minutes long.

Initially, teams were paired randomly. The top two teams were allowed to pick a partner and compete in a best of three final.

The highest scoring team was Vexed and Confused, who picked Megatron to be its alliance partner. The second ranked team was Taimoor, who picked The Excess as its alliance partner. Taimoor and The Excess prevailed in the final, 2 wins to nil.

Taimoor’s robot was agile and had an arm capable of picking the tennis ball off the ground and place it into the goal, while The Excess were powerful and had a mechanism that allowed it to control the tennis ball and score in the bottom goal. This combination proved to be a very effective team, as Taimoor was freed to score when The Excess interfered with the opposing robots. Cooperation proved to be the most powerful bonus to the winning alliance.

The preparation for the competition occurred over the final five weeks of the semester, and students used concepts taught in class, such as how to design a gear train to amplify torque or speed, to improve their designs. 10 teams competed in the competition.

Dr. Seshadri Mohan, chair of UALR’s Department of Systems Engineering, and Dr. Nitin Agarwal, assistant professor of Information Science are serving as guest editors of the June 2012 edition of IEEE Communications Magazine.

Also serving with Drs. Mohan and Agarwal in that role is Dr. Ashutosh Dutta, the chief technology officer for NIKSUN, a Princeton, NJ-based company that provides cybersecurity and network performance appliances.

The three guest editors have authored an editorial entitled “Social Networks Meet Mobile Networks” that addresses the possibilities that are arising as use of mobile devices escalates at the same time bandwidth is increasing. “These technological advancements have created a favorable environment for launching mobile-aware social computing applications, offering practitioners and researchers key architectural challenges with numerous fledgling opportunities,” the editorial notes.

The editorial introduces four articles on the subject included in the June issue of IEEE Communications Magazine, and concludes that “the advances in both Web paradigm and mobile devices have induced phenomenal socio-technical behavioral changes in the users of these technologies. The advent of social applications has invigorated the user-content creation and sharing at an unprecedented scale. Further, pushing these applications onto mobile devices has intensified content generation by leaps and bounds. Users can share whatever they like and wherever and whenever they want. However, the impact of advances in both the sectors and the resulting interaction between them has not been fully explored and understood. There exists a plethora of exciting opportunities and intricate challenges to mutually leverage the advancements in each sector to the benefit of the other in offering a rich user experience.”

IEEE Communications Magazine has a monthly circulation of 41,000 copies, making it the most broadly distributed of any of the publications of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE’s highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities.

UALR will receive a three-year $750,000 grant from NASA as part of the space agency’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research – EPSCoR. Most of the funds will support research and development by Dr. Cang Ye, an associate professor in the Systems Engineering Department, and his work on robot vision systems for vehicles on the moon or Mars.

UALR is one of the 17 research colleges and universities sharing in a $12.6 million grant project for research and technology development in areas important to NASA’s mission and that support higher education students. UALR is the only institution in Arkansas to receive an award.

Ye and his research team will develop new computer vision methods based on a 3-D time-of-flight camera – Flash LIDAR Camera (FLC) – and a prototype of an autonomous navigation system using a single FLC for a planetary rover.

“The system will estimate the rover’s position and orientation along the path, mapping its surrounding into a large scale 3-D map, analyze the map, and make navigational decisions,” Ye said. “The FLC-based system may achieve better accuracy and repeatability of position and orientation estimates and produce more accurate and reliable 3-D map than the current stereovision approach used in the Mars rovers.”

The new navigation system reduces shadowing problems with the current sterovision system that can cause failure of the rover’s visual odometry, a rover egomotion estimation method that assumes a static rover operation environment.

“Another advantage of using an active imaging sensor is that it will allow night driving for the rover,” Ye said. “The new system is expected to provide a much higher level of rover autonomy and has potential in changing the way a rover operates in an alien
environment.”

In 2010, Ye co-authored an internationally acclaimed paper on computer vision for robotic exploration. UALR undergraduate student Chris Robinson and Ph.D candidate Prasad M. Hegde worked with Ye and engineers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory on the problem of keeping rovers on the moon and Mars from getting stuck.

Their research was named “Best Paper” at the 2010 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering International Conference on Mechantronics and Automation in Xi’An, China.

The next generation of smartphones and other mobile devices promises to be a much more pleasant experience for users, thanks to higher quality-of-service capabilities, said Dr. Seshadri Mohan, chair of UALR’s Department of Systems Engineering.

He and two colleagues who are experts in wireless communications technologies are the guest editors of the March 2012 edition of IEEE Communications Magazine and will introduce six articles specifying upcoming developments in next-generation wireless networks.

Mohan joined Anne Y. Lee, a Bell Labs Fellow and CTO of Advanced Communications Solutions Innovations at Alcatel-Lucent, and Abdi Modarressi, a distinguished member of the technical staff at AT&T, to edit the issue.

“In this issue of IEEE Communications Magazine, we are pleased to have assembled six diverse high-quality articles addressing the topic of ‘Convergence of Application Services in Next-Generation Networks,’” the editors said.

Mohan and his colleagues said thanks to higher quality-of-service capabilities in next-generation networks, popular mobile user activities such as watching videos, listening to music, and playing games will become more stable, faster, and better integrated.

“Another crucial aspect of next-generation service architecture relates to the ability of third parties, including end users, to inject features, enhancements, and/or capabilities into, or on top of, baseline services provided by traditional service providers,” Mohan and his co-editors said.

A range of themes are included in the six articles such as providing a framework for intelligent service adaptation, providing models for service construction and service exposure, provisioning novel services, implementing mechanisms that help end users compose services, and addressing the complex issue of incorporating application intelligence in transport services.

IEEE Communications Magazine has a monthly circulation of 41,000 copies, making it the most broadly distributed of any of the publications of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.
