Henderson State University hosted the TRIO AASAP 2013 Spring Leadership Conference on April 19th, 2013 in Arkadelphia, AR. The event gave everyone an opportunity to remind ourselves that we are here to serve the TRIO clients to the best of our ability. During the entertainment and creativity session, the UALR TRIO Pre-College Punk Rock Band showed off their singing talent.

Fish Training (February and March of 2013)

TRIO Pre-college staff members participated in the 6-week Fish training during February and March of 2013. Fish philosophy was developed by John Christensen, owner of Charter House Learning, in 1997 when he visited a fish market store in Seattle, Washington. The four core principles of Fish are:

These principles enable TRIO staff members to serve our clients with more productivity and an enjoyable experience.

UAPB 2013 Science Fair

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was the site Thursday for the 2013 Science Fair Exposition, where ninth-grader Jacob Andersen of Ridgway Christian School won Best of Fair for his project “Plant vs. Oil: A Study of Phytoremediation in Arkansas Aquatic Plants.”

The competition at UAPB’S health, phyiscal education and recreation complex attracted nearly 200 students in grades seven through 12 from schools throughout the region in spite of the cold, stormy weather conditions Thursday morning.

Participating schools included White Hall High School; Dollarway High School; Watson Chapel Junior High School; Jack Robey Junior High School; Pine Bluff High School; Stuttgart High School; Ridgway Christian School; Little Rock Central High School; Little Rock Fair High School; Mabelvale Magnet School; and Dunbar Middle School.

Billy Huggins, a judge at the science fair looks over and scores the entries from high school students from around the region during the 2013 Science Fair Exposition held at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB).

The Educational Opportunity Center presented a workshop on February 9th, 2013 on helpful tips for using existing computer services and the Internet for free to maximize productivity. Topics included:

How to convert a paper form into an electronic form without additional scanning
How to fax a document for free
How to receive a faxed document through an email account
How to send text messages to a cell phone using an email account
How to access personal documents from wherever the
Internet is available
How to take advantage of existing computer services for free
Question and Answer session for any technology related issues or concerns

UALR Financial Aid Counselor, Ms. Ronnie Kroepfl, were available to assist TRIO clients with federal and state grants and scholarships.

EOC 2012 College Workshop for Millitary and Veteran Members (December 8, 2012)

Representatives from Veterans Upward Bound TRIO Program and Army Recruiting Officials presented useful information on military education Dr. Gary Gaston from Pulaski. Tech’s AAS in Military Technologies program, Gail Nelson from UALR’s Veterans Affairs Office, Kathy Oliverio from UALR’s Office of the Provos benefits offered guidance on getting college credit for military experience. In addition, the representatives from the Veteran Center discussed issues military members and Veterans are facing in the classroom.

ETS Fall 2012 Tutoring Workshop

TRIO Educational Talent Search Center is offering tutorial in English, math, science, and history for students from grades 6 to 12. Parent MUST accompany students on the first night to provide authorization on the application form. The tutorial workshop is on every Mondays and Tuesdays at 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm from October 15, 2012 to December 18, 2012.
