At UA Little Rock, our work for the next five years is captured in our newly crafted Integrated Strategic Plan, developed through a collaborative campus process. The Strategic Planning Committee developed five overarching goals \u2014 Access, Experience, Attainment, Research, and Community Engagement<\/strong> \u2014 that will define UA Little Rock and its effort to support students and our community. The component plans will be published soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\nInstitutional Goals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
ACCESS:<\/strong> Increase student access to transformative educational experiences that are affordable, versatile, and relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\nEXPERIENCE:<\/strong> Improve the student, faculty, and staff experience by cultivating an engaging campus community that promotes belonging and connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\nATTAINMENT:<\/strong> Strengthen educational attainment through academic programs leading to social and economic mobility and the achievement of students\u2019 aspirational goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\nRESEARCH:<\/strong> Expand the institution\u2019s applied research footprint to provide advanced educational opportunities and to broaden external impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCOMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:<\/strong> Enhance community engagement through partnerships and collaborations involving faculty, staff, and students that address local, state, and regional needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMission Statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Larson (president, 1930-1950). Despite limited funding, Larson was determined to see LRJC flourish. In 1929, his aspirations for expanding the junior college were fulfilled when former Arkansas Gov. George W. Donaghey named LRJC as the sole beneficiary of a trust valued in excess of $2 million.<br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An increased commitment to public service marked the school’s growth over the next decades as LRJC continually found new ways to meet the community’s educational needs. For instance, the school responded to Little Rock’s employment demands by offering vocational instruction in areas such as surveying and pattern-making and educated non-traditional students through adult education courses in art history, sketching, and literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1957, the institution began a four\u2010year degree program, became independent and privately supported under a separate board of trustees, and took the name Little Rock University.Jaycee moved to its current location in 1949 after Little Rock businessman Raymond Rebsamen generously donated an 80-acre tract of land on Hayes Street. That was a major step in the creation of a multi\u2010campus system that now includes eight campuses: University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; University of Arkansas at Little Rock; University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff; University of Arkansas at Monticello; Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas; University of Arkansas Community College at Hope; and University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville. Within this structure, UALR is state supported, operationally separate, and specifically oriented toward serving the educational needs of Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Arkansas merger began a period of rapid growth, which saw UALR go from about 3,500 students and 75 full\u2010time faculty members in 1969 to more than 12,000 students and 500 full\u2010time faculty members today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University\u2019s expanded offerings now include more than 100 undergraduate majors, an extensive schedule of night, weekend, and off\u2010campus classes, and a wide range of community educational services. UALR began offering graduate and professional work in 1975, and the UALR Graduate School was created in 1977.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leadership\">Leadership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Presidents include R.C. Hall (1927\u20101930), John A. Larson (1930\u20101950), Granville Davis (1950\u20101954), E.Q. Brothers (acting president 1954\u20101956), and Carey V. Stabler (1956\u20101969).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chancellors of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock include Carey V. Stabler (1969\u20101972), James H. Fribourgh (acting chancellor 1972\u2010 1973, 1982), G. Robert Ross (1973\u20101982), James H. Young (1982\u20101992), Joel E. Anderson (interim chancellor 1993), Charles E. Hathaway (1993\u20102002), Joel E. Anderson (2003\u20102016), Andrew Rogerson (2016-2019), and Christina Drale (2019-).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-milestones\">Milestones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1927<\/strong> Little Rock Board of Education established Little Rock Junior College (LRJC) upon the urging of Swedish-born principal John A. Larson. The college was located in Little Rock High School (now Little Rock Central High School) at West 14th and Park Streets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1929<\/strong> LRJC became the beneficiary of a trust established by former Arkansas Governor George W. Donaghey and his wife Louvenia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1931<\/strong> LRJC moved to the Uriah M. Rose Grammar School located at 13th and State Streets beginning with the fall term in September.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1949<\/strong> LRJC moved to present location on an 80-acre tract of land on Hayes Street (now University Avenue) donated by Mr. Raymond Rebsamen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1949<\/strong> LRJC\u2019s football team won Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1957<\/strong> LRJC became the private Little Rock University (LRU) and began offering four-year degrees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1969<\/strong> Little Rock University merged with the University of Arkansas System to create the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1975<\/strong> UA law program in Little Rock transferred to UALR and School of Law created.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1975<\/strong> UA Graduate School of Social Work in Little Rock transferred to UALR.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1977<\/strong> UALR Graduate School established.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1978<\/strong> UA Industrial Research and Extension Center in Little Rock transferred to UALR.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1979<\/strong> UALR joined the Trans-America Athletic Conference and began NCAA Division I competition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1985<\/strong> UA Little Rock Graduate Resident Center graduate programs in education transferred to UALR.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1986<\/strong> UA Graduate Institute of Technology in Little Rock transferred to UALR.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1986<\/strong> UALR Public Radio\u2013KUAR-FM public radio went on the air.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1990<\/strong> First UALR doctoral degree offered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1991<\/strong> UALR joined SunBelt Athletic Conference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1992<\/strong> First UALR student residence hall opened.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1995<\/strong> UALR Benton Center opened.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1999<\/strong> Donaghey College of Information Science and Systems Engineering (now Donaghey college of Engineering and Information Technology) established.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2000<\/strong> UALR classified as doctoral university\/research intensive in the National Carnegie categories of institutions of higher education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2002<\/strong> UALR celebrated its 75th anniversary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2004<\/strong> UALR purchased University Plaza Shopping Center on south end of campus at Asher and University Avenues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2005<\/strong> UALR opened on-campus intercollegiate athletic arena, a gift from Mr. Jackson T. The university offers more than 60 <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/\">undergraduate programs<\/a> and more than 40 graduate programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. News and World Report has recognized the <a href=\"http:\/\/ualr.edu\/law\">William H. Bowen School of Law<\/a>\u2019s legal writing program as one of the nation\u2019s Top 10, the School of Business among the top tier business schools in the country, and the George W. Donaghey College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math\u2019s systems engineering program as one of the best in the South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UA Little Rock nursing students have the advantage of one of the country\u2019s top state-of-the-art simulation hospitals, known as SimCare. It\u2019s a 22-bed, high-fidelity hospital, training students in all areas of care as they work with interactive manikins that simulate a variety of medical-surgical scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applied Design, a UA Little Rock program to study contemporary studio craft such as ceramics, metalsmithing and jewelry, and furniture design and woodworking is the only degree program of its kind in the state and one of the very few accredited programs in this specialty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UA Little Rock School of Criminal Justice houses the largest criminal justice program in the state and offers the only Ph.D. criminal justice program in Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-research\">Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it’s building a better tomato or looking into cancer treatments, students get an opportunity to work alongside faculty, putting their knowledge to use in UA Little Rock’s state-of-the-art research facilities. success support structures, and continuing to raise admission standards as appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 1: <\/em>Institutionalize a system for identifying, analyzing, and removing barriers to success using a standing retention and graduation committee of the University Assembly which will be responsible for presenting recommendations to appropriate faculty and administrative groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 2: <\/em>Strengthen and adopt more proactive advising and mentoring (both academic and developmental) of undergraduate and graduate with exceptional ability including expanding Honors programs and developing individualized opportunities for students with specific career or graduate school objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objective 2:<\/strong> UALR will enhance student learning through the integration of student research, internships, externships, service learning opportunities, and other educational experiences into the curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 1:<\/em>Enhance and expand research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 2:<\/em> Enhance the number of strategically chosen, collaborative relationships between UALR and external organizations to create unique learning opportunities for UALR students. (i .e., other institutions of higher education, non-profit and cultural organizations, related business, industry, state and municipal agencies, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 3:<\/em> Increase the number of undergraduate programs that include service learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 4:<\/em> Incorporate a service component into all academic programs in which it is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objective 3:<\/strong> UALR will strengthen the sense of community in the student body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 1: <\/em>Create additional student-centered events and gathering spaces, which become part of campus tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 2:<\/em> Enhance the intercollegiate athletics program and expand the intramural athletics program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 3:<\/em> Develop virtual campus communities for students through use of social media and virtual administrative and academic support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 4:<\/em> Require first-time, entering full-time freshmen, including those who transfer AP and concurrent credit to UALR, to live on campus, and require students living on campus to purchase a meal plan, with exceptions for extenuating circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 5: <\/em>Maintain a safe campus environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 6:<\/em> Continue to develop on-campus housing options to meet need and demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 7: <\/em>Work with University District partners to develop amenities (shopping, entertainment, etc.) which will appeal to the student body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-goal-2-ualr-will-develop-as-a-research-institution-in-alignment-with-its-carnegie-classification-as-a-doctoral-research-university\">Goal 2: UALR will develop as a research institution in alignment with its Carnegie classification as a doctoral research university.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objective 1:<\/strong> UALR will continue to develop and mature as a research university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 1: <\/em>Hire and retain faculty with the demonstrated capacity to contribute to the achievement of the university \u2019s research mission and agenda in alignment with the 2007 Faculty Roles and Rewards statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 2:<\/em> Develop research offices and oversight groups to provide leadership in staying abreast of best practices and in conformity with applicable laws and regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 3:<\/em> Build an appropriate support infrastructure, including research facilities, equipment and technology with replacement programs, reassigned time for faculty with productive research agendas, seed funding for research projects, and increased numbers of graduate assistantships with competitive stipends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 4: <\/em>Pursue external partnerships to enhance fulfillment of UALR \u2019s research mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 5:<\/em> Support the development of library and archival resources such as the Sequoyah National Research Center and the Arkansas Studies Institute to facilitate research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 6:<\/em> Ensure the maturation of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization to take advantage of promising discoveries emanating from the work of UALR faculty and students for the benefit of Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objective 2:<\/strong> UALR will support the development of key research units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 1: <\/em>Continue to develop and enhance the Nanotechnology Center as a Center of Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 2: <\/em>Play a leadership role in the development of a research park in central Little<br>\nRock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 3:<\/em> Develop the Institute on Race and Ethnicity to address through research the problem of racial and ethnic injustice in Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 4:<\/em> Establish and implement a process by which priority research initiatives, programs, and Centers of Excellence are supported , and their continued success evaluated within the framework of UALR \u2019s commitment to economic and <\/em><br>\nSeek partnerships to increase the quality of education in central Arkansas schools, increase the number of teachers in subjects where particular shortages exist (STEM, foreign languages, etc.), and prepare teachers for service in areas of the state with teacher shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 2:<\/em> Expand UALR \u2019s successful African-American Male Initiative to include satellite AAM I programs in nearby school districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 3:<\/em> Lead the Central Little Rock Promise Neighborhood to provide cradle-to\u00ad<br>\ncareer pathways for children in the initiative\u2019s zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objective 2:<\/strong> UALR will align research and outreach initiatives to facilitate economic development in Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 1:<\/em> Assess on a periodic basis the workforce and economic development needs of the region and, within available resources, implement programs and initiatives to meet those needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strategy 2:<\/em> Engage the campus community in a conversation about the significance of economic development to the institution \u2019s external mission and
