You may also access the messages tool within a selected course.  From the course\u2019s navigation menu, click the \u201cMessages\u201d tab to open, review, and respond. Again, the numbered circle indicates the number of unread messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Send, Respond, or Delete Messages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You may send a message to anyone in your course, including your instructor, if this is their preferred communication. Be sure to check your syllabus, as many instructors prefer using campus email instead of the Messages course tool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To send a message, select the envelope icon \u201cNew Message\u201d to open the course content editor.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Message Display<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The New Message content editor has several features. The Recipients<\/strong> area lets you select to whom the message is sent. To make a selection, click the search icon to display the recipient list. This may include your instructor(s), peers, and others with course access.  Scroll through the list to add your selection. It\u2019s important to note that messages inside a course are only visible when you access the course either through the university\u2019s  Institution Page or within the course menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure the message is received outside the course, be sure to select the Send an email copy to recipients<\/strong>. This will also post your message to the campus email. However, if they respond to your message, it will be delivered through campus mail and not to the course messages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Remember, the Message area of the content editor lets you, of course, add a text message, but you can also add a link, an attachment, or media content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to Course Messages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To respond to a message inside your course, click the Message Tab and review your unread messages indicated by the purple circle. You may select either the message icon or the link to open the course content editor and reply. You may reply with your peers, creating a thread of messages<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding Peers to your Message Thread<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Message Tool may be used to create community and connect with your peers. You may connect with others on research topics, projects, or other learning activities. Invite your peers to join a message thread and begin collaborating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you open your message, you have the option to select an individual or group to join the message thread by selecting the join icon in the upper right, noted by the people + icon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also use a journal as a self-reflective tool to post your opinions, ideas, and concerns about the course, or discuss and analyze course-related materials. For example, you can describe problems faced and how you solved them. Your instructor can direct journal entries to be more formal in nature and narrower in focus by listing topics for discussion. Journal entries can be assigned a grade or used solely for communication. In either instance, you can make multiple entries for one journal topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accessing-journals\">Accessing Journals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can access Journals inside the Course Content Outline or from the Gradebook. In the Course Content Outline, you may need to select a module or folder to access the journal. To find the journal from the Gradebook, click the tab and locate the Journal Title. If the response is lengthy, some find it convenient to draft their thoughts in a document editor, check the spelling and grammar, then copy and paste their response into the Content Editor. Note: The content editor may close due to inactivity. If this happens, your work will be lost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-journal-tool-functions\">Journal Tool Functions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Journal Tool works similarly to the other tools, where you can access the content editor.<strong> <\/strong>The Journal Topic is available upon access, and the number of Entries or responses may be changed per page. The <strong>Journal Topic<\/strong> displays information regarding the topic.<br>2. The <strong>Entries<\/strong> dropdown menu allows you to change the number of posts to 5, 10, or 20.<br>3. Use the <strong>Content Editor<\/strong> to add text, links, attachments, or video content to your response.<br>4.  <strong>Details and Information<\/strong> provide the due date, grading details, or rubric, if one is provided.<br>5.  Be sure to <strong>Cancel and Post<\/strong> your response to the Journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-editing-your-journal-entry\">Editing Your Journal Entry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The journal tool does not allow you to save a draft, but you can edit the post if needed. To do this, click the three ellipses in the right corner of the post. During your course, you may be asked to use the Discussion Board to introduce yourself, to respond to instructor questions and reply to others, to formulate answers to case studies, or as part of a peer writing and review process. After reviewing the discussion topic information, you can prepare your response. You may find it convenient to use a text document to write and revise your response, then copy and paste the text into the <strong>Post a response to the Discussion<\/strong> box, item two. If your response is concise, taking only a few minutes to write, then place your cursor in the \u201cpost\u201d box and begin your response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some instructors require you to <strong>post a response to see the discussion activity<\/strong>, noted in item three. To do this, add your information to the Content Editor and use the <strong>Save Draft <\/strong>link to save your work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When ready, locate the draft and just click the ellipse icon to update your response. In addition, an email will be sent to your UA Little Rock email account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should confirm that you’ve received a receipt of your submission each time you turn in your work by checking your UA Little Rock email account. In addition to acting as a plagiarism deterrent, it also has features designed to aid you with learning about plagiarism and the importance of proper attribution of content from other sources and by other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students submit their work to SafeAssign as part of the assignment submission process detailed above. Not all assignments in Blackboard use SafeAssign, but those that do will ask you to agree to submitting your paper to the Global Reference Database when you attach your work for submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once submitted, SafeAssign checks the originality of your work by comparing the text to text on the Internet, within published articles, and to the work of other students at UA Little Rock. Use it to format text, attach files, or add media like images and video to your work. An Ally-enabled course will display an icon next to any file eligible for alternative formats.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty will also see indicators that display scores for content items scanned by Ally and have access to the Ally course report. Many will find they can make simple adjustments to improve the content scores, but faculty in need of assistance can <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/elearning\/faculty-support\/\">reach out to eLearning support<\/a> for more information about the remediation services available.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><br \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alternative-formats\">Alternative Formats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ally generates alternative formats of documents uploaded directly into Blackboard so that anyone who needs them can choose the format that works best for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Ally is enabled in a course, faculty don\u2019t have to do anything to make these alternative formats available Ally generates them for both students and faculty when requested through the interface, directly within the course where the content item appears without altering the original source file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accessibility-scores\">Accessibility Scores<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ally provides faculty with feedback about uploaded content in the form of indicators, which are embedded alongside each content item scored by the system, and allow faculty to quickly locate items in the course in need of remediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clicking an indicator opens the Ally feedback panel, which shows the file\u2019s accessibility score that\u2019s calculated based on the severity of the accessibility issues present in the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The feedback panel lists those issues along with tips for fixing them, and faculty can even use the feedback panel to replace content that\u2019s been remediated — it\u2019s as simple as dragging and dropping the updated file. Once updated, Ally automatically recalculates the score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-course-accessibility-report\">Course Accessibility Report<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A course-level report is also available for faculty to see an aggregate score for the content in a course and review a list of individual content-level scores at a glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty can access the feedback panel for individual content items directly from the course-level report, making it easy for them to assess issues in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Content and course-level scores are not visible to students — they\u2019re simply there to help faculty identify issues detected by Ally and track their progress as they remedy them. Therefore, course shells and archive access options become unavailable with each advancing semester. The rationale for having this process is that eLearning must manage the storage space on the LMS to avoid excess financial charges to the university. Additionally, this process is designed to increase assistance to academic departments dealing with scheduling realities (e.g. having a course shell available to help an adjunct prepare for teaching a course).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this, faculty are strongly encouraged to copy their course shells to their personal computers and\/or external hard drives so that they will have an archived course to pull from when needed in the future. Blackboard course materials downloaded for course archives must remain in the \u201cZIP\u201d file format if it is to be reinstated\/reinstalled on the Blackboard LMS at a later date in a Blackboard shell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once course shells become unavailable (meaning removed from the LMS), course content can only be accessed for an additional nine-semesters (i.e. three years). This means each semester course shell data will be removed from the server archive managed by eLearning, and will no longer exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Explanation of LMS, to ITS Server, Permanent Deletion Transition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the information above, course shells will become unavailable progressively with each advancing semester. Course shells that have reached the end of the six semester period will be removed from the LMS on the day that grades are due for the current semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, it is recommended that instructors archive their courses at the end of the term in which the course was taught and before they are scheduled for removal. Retaining copies of the syllabus, electronic grade book and electronic student work is the sole responsibility of the instructor. Instructors should always download student work or make copies of the grade book prior to the removal of courses from the LMS. eLearning will periodically notify the faculty community with general messaging of the courses scheduled for deletion and provide instructions for preserving course content off-line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to obtain access to a course that is no longer available on the list of courses on the Blackboard dashboard, a copy may requested from eLearning\u2019s course archives (i.e. the three years of course shells beyond the two years on the LMS). Instructor, Course Coordinator, and Teaching Assistant) must be requested through the office of Records and Registration.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n <p class=\"boxed\" style=\"text-align:center;padding:20px;background:none\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ualr.edu\/trojan-login?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fualr.edu%2Fblackboard%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fpages%3F_nocache\">Log in with your university email<\/a> to access this form.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Information about Course Roles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most users are added to the courses in which they belong automatically by our enrollment script. Either the instructor of record or the department chair can also grant the following types of access through the request form:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Course Copy Access – allows users to copy course contents without being listed as the instructor.<br>\nCourse Builder – allows users to edit content and provide design assistance to the instructor of record, with the exception of some areas that contain student records.<br>\nViewer Access – provides view-only access to courses for faculty and department staff.<br>\nIncomplete Access – students with an official incomplete can be added to a section of the course in the current term to finish collaborative work like group assignments and discussion boards.<br>\nAdditional levels of access can be granted by providing a short narrative regarding the nature of the request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also request access to a course by using the form. Once you’ve submitted a request, we will contact the appropriate party for permission and notify you once the request has been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please keep in mind that we can\u2019t add users as the instructor of a course; this must be assigned through Banner. Users in the student role must also be added to a course by the enrollment script, which happens automatically when they register for a course in BOSS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any additional roles that can access student records in the grade center — like Teaching Assistants and Course Coordinators — must be assigned to the course in Banner. Simply copy and paste the paragraph from the provost’s website into your syllabus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a title=\"UA Little Rock Disability Resource Center\" href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/disability\/\">UA Little Rock Disability Resource Center <\/a> provides information and support for teaching students with disabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/policy\/home\/admin\/disability\/\">Adaptive equipment<\/a> and support is available on our campus in student computer labs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ally-for-blackboard\">Ally for Blackboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blackboard Ally for courses\" width=\"1778\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FmUTPI4sujo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ally for Blackboard is a tool integrated directly into the course interface to provide users with alternative formats of documents uploaded to the system and to help faculty improve the accessibility of their courses by providing feedback about issues present in those documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-i-enable-access-to-ally-in-my-courses\">How do I enable access to Ally in my courses?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Fall 2023, Ally for Blackboard should be automatically enabled for all courses by default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-i-have-to-do-once-ally-has-been-enabled-in-a-course\">What do I have to do once Ally has been enabled in a course?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once turned on for a course, faculty don\u2019t have to do anything for students to benefit from the alternative formats generated by Ally. An Ally-enabled course will display an icon next to any file eligible for alternative formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty will also see indicators that display scores for content items scanned by Ally and have access to the Ally course report. Many will find they can make simple adjustments to improve the content scores, but faculty in need of assistance can <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/elearning\/faculty-support\/\">reach out to eLearning support<\/a> for more information about the remediation services available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alternative-formats\">Alternative Formats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ally generates alternative formats of documents uploaded directly into Blackboard so that anyone who needs them can choose the format that works best for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Ally is enabled in a course, faculty don\u2019t have to do anything to make these alternative formats available Ally generates them for both students and faculty when requested through the interface, directly within the course where the content item appears without altering the original source file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accessibility-scores\">Accessibility Scores<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ally provides faculty with feedback about uploaded content in the form of indicators which are embedded alongside each content item scored by the system and allow faculty to quickly locate items in the course in need of remediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clicking an indicator opens the Ally feedback panel, which shows the file\u2019s accessibility score that\u2019s calculated based on the severity of the accessibility issues present in the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The feedback panel lists those issues along with tips for fixing them, and faculty can even use the feedback panel to replace content that\u2019s been remediated — it\u2019s as simple as dragging and dropping the updated file.
