A snapshot of the 1980s, this exhibit reflects a decade of an active and expanding art community in Arkansas and the importance of community patronage.
This year marks the 65 th anniversary of Mitchell, Williams, Selig, Gates & Woodyard, P.L.L.C. In 1967, the firm’s Managing Partner Maurice Mitchell and Attorney Chris Barrier discussed how the law firm could support and focus attention on the arts in a unique way. They began collecting art including work created by faculty and students at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, as well as other artists living in the state. UA Little Rock established a collection in 1972 that would supplement the teaching mission of the Department of Art. Many artists are represented in both collections and are placed side by side in this exhibition.
There are 22 works from the corporate collection at Mitchell, Williams, Selig, Gates & Woodyard, P.L.L.C. and 11 works from the UA Little Rock Permanent Collection. Artists included in the exhibition: Al Allen, David Bailin, Kathleen Holder, Dominique Simmons, Kitty Mashburn, Patrick McFarlin, Warren Criswell, Sally Williams, Evan Lindquist, Gertrude Tara-Casciano, Anne Fordyce, Tarrance Corbin, William “Rocky” Sapp, Cheryl Wall, Lou Boswell, Reita Miller, Margaret Speer, Warren Sims, and Alice Andrews.
