Haven Herring Q&A
How did you get started in the University Career Services profession?
I am a full-time student at UA Little Rock pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a focus on game design. This interest naturally led me into graphic design across various digital mediums. After building a small portfolio and exploring opportunities through online platforms and conversations with others, I connected with the University Career Services office and learned about this opportunity.
Describe a “typical workday” in University Career Services.
Working in University Career Services brings something new every day. I might start by checking emails and social media, creating engaging posts, and reviewing analytics to see what students connect with. My day may also include taking photos, designing graphics, and developing career-readiness content like Career Tip Tuesdays, internship spotlights, and resume reminders. I brainstorm fresh ways to engage Trojans and keep them informed about career opportunities. Every task strengthens my communication, creativity, and teamwork skills while contributing to a supportive campus environment.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
I enjoy creating, whether it’s game design, graphic design, short- or long-form content, or even music. Bringing my ideas to life through my own work gives me a sense of joy unlike anything else.
What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
During the spring semester of my senior year in high school, I spent a week and a half living with a host family in Japan. I attended a local school, learned about the language and culture, and experienced the everyday differences between our societies. This opportunity broadened my worldview and deepened my understanding of cultural perspectives, adding meaningful depth to how I see and navigate life.
What do you like best about living in Central Arkansas?
I love how close we are to everything; it makes it easy to experience the city’s culture without having to drive far. One of my favorite spots is “Stickyz Rock ’n’ Roll Chicken Shack,” where I’ve enjoyed several shows since enrolling at UA Little Rock, all of which have been fantastic.
