2026 Awardees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education announced the five recipients of the college-level 2026 Faculty Excellence Awards<\/strong>. Professors Jana McAuliffe, Michael Underwood, April Chatham-Carpenter, Lundon Pinneo, and Maureece Levin were named winners by the college\u2019s Faculty Excellence Awards Selection Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The college recipients will be recognized at the UA Little Rock Faculty Excellence Awards on Thursday, April 2, at 5 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building. A reception will be held prior to the ceremony and the university-level recipients will be announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jana McAuliffe, Excellence in Teaching<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jana McAuliffe is an associate professor of philosophy in the School of Human Inquiry. She specializes in social-political philosophy. Her research integrates political analysis, legal analysis, and philosophical theory to understand current disputes in the United States pertaining to sexuality and gender, and her publications include work in Philosophy and Social Criticism<\/em>, Feminist Philosophy Quarterly<\/em>, and The Journal of Teaching Philosophy<\/em>. Jana serves as coordinator for the Philosophy, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Gender Studies Programs, is a faculty senator representing CHASSE, and is on the University Core Council and the Donaghey Scholars Policy Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jana teaches The Philosophical Life, upper-level seminars in Social and Political Philosophy, Feminist Theory, Philosophy of Law, and Philosophy of Race, and co-teaches History of Ideas III for the Donaghey Scholars Program. Her pedagogy focuses on helping students cultivate a unique intellectual voice. Because philosophy can be unsettling, she fosters open, warm discussions and assigns writing that encourages students to connect course concepts with their own perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To support original, high-quality work, she scaffolds major writing projects over several weeks and helps students choose the best genre to communicate their ideas. When addressing non-academic audiences, students have produced op-eds, speeches, pamphlets, works of art, and even a sermon. This approach helps students develop both a clear point of view and a distinctive voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jana is the Faculty Sponsor for the Socratic Society, Rainbow Alliance, and Secular Student Alliance RSOs. She has mentored many students who obtained Signature Experience Grants, supporting them to pursue independent research in philosophy and interdisciplinary areas. She is on the advising board for the Public Philosophy Network, a national organization, and chairs its Events Committee. Jana is also the project director of the UA Little Rock Ethics and Philosophy Summer Academy, a week-long residential summer camp for high school students. The academy is a collaboration between philosophy faculty and teachers at Central High School. In Summer 2024 and 2025, high school students from across the state came to campus for a no-cost philosophical experience at due to grant funding secured by Jana. She is also the co-organizer for the Arkansas High School Ethics Bowl, a debate-style competition for high school students focused on crucial, current ethical issues. Through both of these projects, she works to bring philosophical community and education to young Arkansans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Underwood, Excellence in Research or Creative Endeavors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Michael Underwood began his tenure at the University of Arkansas Little Rock in 2006. He teaches low brass, music theory, composition, brass chamber music, and directs the jazz ensemble. He has led the UA Little Rock Jazz Ensemble since it inception in 2012. The band has been featured at the Dardanelle Jazz Festival and the Arkansas State Jazz Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Underwood is a scholar of the American composer Ann Giffels. In 2025, he collaborated with Dr. Lorissa Mason for the premiere recording of her masters composition, \u201cThe Invisible Choir,\u201d a piece for chorus, orchestra, and two vocal soloists, which had sat dormant since 1951. The ASO performed his orchestration of her \u201cFugue in D\u201d in 2022, and he performed her \u201cFugue in Two Voices\u201d at his faculty recital in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A prolific arranger, Dr. Underwood composed six jazz trombone \u00e9tudes for the Arkansas All-State competition. His arrangements have been performed by the ASO, and at universities including UA Little Rock, Texas Tech University, and Stephen F. Austin State University. He has also published three trombone quartets of Claude Debussy\u2019s piano music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Underwood has served as principal trombonist of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra since 2003. He was a featured soloist at the 2019 and 2024 International Trombone Festivals and with the ASO in 2019. He traveled to Xuzhou, China, as a guest jazz artist and performer at the Jiangsu Normal School. Other performance highlights include the Arkansas premiere of Christian Lindberg\u2019s \u201cMandrake in the Corner\u201d with the Little Rock Wind Symphony and a featured soloist with the Natural State Brass Band. The ASO has featured Dr. Underwood on its \u201cRiver Rhapsodies\u201d chamber music series and he has performed with symphonies across the country. He also served in the U.S. Air Force \u201cBand of the Golden West,\u201d at Travis Air Force Base, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A graduate of Lawrence University, Dr. Underwood earned two master\u2019s degrees from Bowling Green State University and a D.M.A. from the University of North Texas. He is married to Karla Fournier, clarinetist in the ASO, and has a step-daughter, Kinsey, who teaches and works for Arts Plus, a non-profit in Charlotte, N.C. He enjoys traveling, exercising, reading presidential history, and is an avid fan of the Milwaukee Bucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April Chatham-Carpenter, Excellence in Service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dr. April Chatham-Carpenter is a professor and the chair of the Department of Applied Communication at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. With a decade of dedicated service to the university, her work is deeply rooted in her department\u2019s mission: to \u201cco-create better social worlds through positive communication.\u201d Dr. Chatham-Carpenter treats her academic service as \u201ctranslational scholarship,\u201d actively applying communication and conflict transformation theory to help individuals and communities engage in disagreement with dignity and solve problems collaboratively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At both the national and local levels, Dr. Chatham-Carpenter is a recognized leader in civic bridge-building and depolarization. She serves in multiple volunteer leadership roles for Braver Angels, a national citizens\u2019 movement aimed at reducing political polarization. Her extensive work with the organization includes facilitating over 25 national workshops, previously serving as Co-Director of National Field Operations, and co-chairing the national-level Event Development and Delivery Steering Team. Regionally, she co-hosts the On the Other Hand podcast for Braver Angels Arkansas and serves as State Coordinator for Arkansas, working to build civic communities across the state where civil dialogue can take place. The podcast, which translates complex communication theories into accessible public media, has garnered over 21,000 downloads across more than 130 episodes. Furthermore, she regularly brings her expertise directly to the local community, leading conflict management workshops for organizations such as the City of Little Rock, the Arkansas Food Bank, and the Arkansas Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On campus, Dr. Chatham-Carpenter\u2019s facilitative leadership shapes her administrative and teaching roles. She acts as the university\u2019s Research Integrity Officer and chairs the CHASSE Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. She actively equips the next generation of civic leaders by developing and teaching coursework in Listening and Civil Dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Chatham-Carpenter holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in communication from the University of Oklahoma and a B.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Central Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lundon Pinneo, Excellence in Social Justice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Lundon Pinneo is an assistant professor in the School of Education and coordinator of the Middle Childhood Education Program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Her work is anchored in a commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based instruction for all students by equipping educators with the tools, structures, and support needed to transform their teaching. Dr. Pinneo leads efforts that expand access to rigorous instruction and high-demand learning opportunities both on campus and across the state. These initiatives directly impact students by improving instructional quality in gateway courses, strengthening teacher preparation, and enabling rural and underserved communities to access advanced coursework and concurrent credit pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Central to this work is Dr. Pinneo\u2019s leadership in the Mobile Summer Institutes on Scientific Teaching (MoSI) and the sustained Communities of Practice (CoPs) that followed. Through MoSI and CoPs, she supports faculty in redesigning courses using research-based, inclusive teaching practices that improve student engagement, persistence, and learning outcomes. This sustained faculty development model\u2014moving beyond one-time workshops to long-term instructional change\u2014led directly to her appointment as Chair of the Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Teaching Evaluation, where she advocated for a three-voice, evidence-based framework for evaluating teaching more fairly and effectively. Together, her grant-funded work, faculty development leadership, and institutional service reflect a coherent approach to educational change: strengthening teaching at scale so that students across disciplines and across Arkansas experience instruction that is rigorous, inclusive, and designed for their success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Maureece Levin, Rising Faculty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Maureece Levin is an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She is an archaeologist and archaeobotanist with interests in food production systems, historical ecology, niche construction, sociocultural change, and archaeological pedagogy. Her research methods focus on archaeobotany, but include a wide variety of archaeological materials, as well as ethnoarchaeology. Levin has worked on questions of ancient food cultivation strategies in Micronesia for close to two decades, and has recently developed and run a new field school program in Pohnpei, Micronesia in collaboration with the Institute for Field Research (IFR). Her current work also includes an ongoing historical archaeology project on the UA Little Rock campus, The Garden Site Archaeological Project, which has integrated with her Archaeological Investigations class, trained archaeological interns, and welcomed volunteers in the field and the lab. Currently, materials from the Garden Site Project are on exhibit on the first floor of Ottenheimer Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Levin teaches other anthropology courses, including Understanding Cultures, Archaeology, and Plants and People. She especially enjoys working with independent study students, three of whom have been awarded Signature Experience Grants for their mentored research, presenting their work at local and regional conferences. Her commitment to teaching led her to participate in the faculty Community of Practice (CoP) organized by the STEM Ed center in 2023 and 2024, and she served as a co-facilitator of the CoP in 2025. She is faculty advisor for the Anthropology Club, and was recently elected chair of the Sustainability Committee. Additionally, she served as vice-president of the Arkansas Association of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology from 2023-2024 and president from 2024-2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Levin’s work has been published in several journals, including Archaeology in Oceania, New Phytologist, Frontiers in Plant Science, Quaternary International, Radiocarbon, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Journal of Anthropological Archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She completed a Ph.D. and M.A. in anthropology at the University of Oregon and a B.A. in anthropology at Whitman College. After completing her Ph.D., she completed postdoctoral work at Stanford University and taught at Valdosta State University before arriving at UA Little Rock.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The B.A.S. is an interdisciplinary degree, which means students will reap the benefit of taking classes that are designed to provide a seamless transition from technical fields to an appropriate bachelor\u2019s degree program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The B.A.S. is a degree-completion program. Students pursuing the B.A.S. must have earned an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) from a regionally-accredited college or university, or 40 hours of technical military credits. The proposed degree program is designed for students who desire to enhance their knowledge, analytical abilities and critical thinking skills for upward mobility in their field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact the CHASSE Student Success Center at 501-916-3296 or email <a href=\"mailto:chasse-advising@ualr.edu\">chasse-advising@ualr.edu<\/a> for more information about this program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bas-degree-checklist\">BAS Degree Checklist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"accordion\">\n\t\t\n<div class=\"accordion-heading\"><button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggle accordion-trigger\" aria-controls=\"accordion-218-content\" id=\"accordion-218\">University Core Curriculum (35 hours)<span class=\"toggle-icon\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div id=\"accordion-218-content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-218\" class=\"accordion-panel\" hidden=\"\">\n\n<p>All students completing the Bachelor of Applied Science degree must complete the University Core Curriculum. The 2019-20 Approved University Core Curriculum is listed here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First Year Colloquium (0-3 hours)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full-time freshmen entering college for the first time and transfer students with less than 12 hours of credit must complete an approved First Year Colloquium. However, students are welcome to select any of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/catalogs\/undergraduate-catalog\/minors-2\/\">minor programs<\/a> available at UA Little Rock. To declare a minor, contact your advisor to let them know.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion-heading\"><button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggle accordion-trigger\" aria-controls=\"accordion-669-content\" id=\"accordion-669\">Notes<span class=\"toggle-icon\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div id=\"accordion-669-content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-669\" class=\"accordion-panel\" hidden=\"\">\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This degree like all bachelors degrees at UA Little Rock requires the completion of 45 upper level hours. The courses required in the major only total 36 hours, so most students (but not all) will need an extra 9 hours of Unrestricted Upper Level (3000-4999) courses. Speak with the BAS Advisor to learn more about this requirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ACOM 1300, Introduction to Communication is a pre-requisite to the ACOM 3330, Professional Communication course which is required for the Bachelor of Applied Science. Work with your advisor for more information about this course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MGMT 3300, Principles of Management is the pre-requisite to most other MGMT Upper Level courses. Make sure you enroll in MGMT 3300 before MGMT 3340 in the degree. MGMT 3300 also has a pre-requisite of Junior level status.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MGMT 3320, Human Resources Development does NOT have a pre-requisite of MGMT 3300, Principles of Management so you can enroll in this as long as you are at Junior level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Second Language Proficiency is not required with this degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This degree is limited to students who have not achieved a baccalaureate degree in the past. Therefore, Post-Baccalaureate students cannot pursue this degree program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students cannot add multiple majors, i.e. double-majors, with any other degree program besides the Bachelor of Applied Science at UA Little Rock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees and military transcripts must be submitted to the Office of Admissions upon entry to the university.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students needing to post technical or military credit can submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/business\/files\/2013\/02\/Request-to-Receive-Credit-for-Technical-andor-Military-Credit.pdf\">Request to Receive Credit for Technical and\/or Military Credit<\/a> to Louis Scivally in order to add needed technical or military credits to their transcript.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Fall of 2017, the Department of Speech Communication (SPCH) changed their department name in the class search to the Department of Applied Communication (ACOM). community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/children\/\"><strong>Children International<\/strong><\/a><br>UA Little Rock Children International is a non-profit organization in Little Rock, AR focused on helping children break the cycle of poverty. We have partnered with schools in the Little Rock School District serving the neighborhoods of Central and Southwest Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Center for Literacy<\/strong><br>The Center for Literacy is committed to using literacy as a lever for educational change that leads to significant increases in teacher knowledge and student achievement. The Center houses four nationally recognized training models: Partnership in Comprehensive Literacy (PCL), Comprehensive Intervention Model (CIM), Reading Recovery (RR), and Comprehensive Literacy (CL) for teacher development. The Center is dedicated to providing premier professional development to educators and to conducting research in literacy-related areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/gifted\/\"><strong>Jodie Mahony Center for Gifted Education<\/strong><\/a><br>As one of only 25 centers in the nation dedicated to the development of gifted students, the Jodie Mahony Center for Gifted Education is uniquely poised to offer training, and guidance to Arkansas residents who are a part of our high-achieving community of thinkers, doers, and learners. The Center is the home of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock graduate programs in gifted education, one of the largest of its kind in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualrpublicradio.org\/\"><strong>Little Rock Public Radio<\/strong><\/a><br>UA Little Rock Public Radio\u2019s mission is to deepen insight into the human experience, empower decision-making and enrich the lives of those we serve through quality news and cultural programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>University Television<\/strong><br>UALRTV provides a window for the community to learn about and enjoy the myriad activities that take place on the UA Little Rock campus. You can also <a href=\"mailto:deanofstudents@ualr.edu\">email the Dean of Students<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-request-for-student-support\">Request for Student Support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSd9n3eBPm-5U7s_c8nfLZFEqQSfbZt7FGk1ExjMhjqWL-C6kA\/viewform\">request student support from the UA Little Rock Care Team.<\/a> A member from the Care Team (typically a staff member in your College) will make contact with you within 48-72 hours, usually sooner. The Care Team member is a resource who can help you navigate UA Little Rock, assist with academic support strategies, conflict resolution, connect you to campus and community resources, help you navigate financial resources, and assistance in crisis situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transportation-to-campus-rock-region-metro\">Transportation to Campus \u2013 Rock Region METRO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UA Little Rock students and employees may ride the bus for free, using the Trojans U-Pass. Go to the I.D. Card Office \u2013 room 114 on the lower level of the Donaghey Student Center, to pick up your Trojans U-Pass. The Trojans U-Pass is a sticker that goes on your UA Little Rock ID card. Each semester, riders will need to get an updated sticker. A sticker issued in January will be good through the summer semester. Riders will need to get a new sticker for the fall semester. For more information visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/communications\/rock-region\/\">ualr.edu\/communications\/rock-region\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-printing-on-campus\">Printing on Campus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ottenheimer Library offers printing, copying and scanning services to students in the first-floor computer lab. Students receive a $10 credit each semester. Some fees apply beyond a certain number of prints. You can find out more at their website under the FAQ: <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/library\/\">ualr.edu\/library\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some departments maintain computer labs which provide printing services to students pursuing majors in their department. Talk with your faculty member to find out more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-science-assistance\">Science Assistance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need tutoring assistance in biology or chemistry, academic assistance is available from the departments. For chemistry, visit room 450 in the Science Lab Building (SCLB). For hours, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/chemistry\/chemistry-tutoring\/\">Chemistry Tutoring page<\/a>. For biology, visit room 350 in the Science Lab Building (SCLB). Hours are posted at the start of each semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-blackboard-student-support\">Blackboard Student Support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Blackboard is course management software used by many instructors at UA Little Rock to deliver content for classes. For assistance with Blackboard, please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualr.edu\/blackboard\">ualr.edu\/blackboard<\/a>.
