From Setback to Service: Joe Guzman Pursues Graduate Degree at UA Little Rock<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just two weeks after moving to Little Rock for a new job with the city\u2019s parks and recreation department, Joe Guzman found himself in a hospital bed facing a life-altering decision. Seven weeks and six surgeries later, Guzman lost his right foot. That experience pushed him to pursue a master\u2019s degree in sport management at UA Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawrance Triplett has always wanted to understand the game of basketball beyond the Xs and Os and the box score. After spending much of his life as a player, his curiosity shifted behind the scenes \u2014 driven by a desire to learn how teams are built, supported, and developed. That passion for growth, both his own and others\u2019, led him to pursue a Master of Science in Sport Management at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and into a role developing student-athletes on and off the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomson began his teaching career as a middle school teacher and coach, and over the years has taught students from the kindergarten to the graduate level. Outside of academia he has worked in corporate fitness, community recreation, and clinical rehabilitation. He has over 20 years of higher education experience and joined the UA Little Rock faculty in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Thomson earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in health and physical education with a minor in biology from Texas A&M University. His master\u2019s degree in exercise science is also from Texas A&M. He earned his doctor in education from the University of Houston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses taught at UA Little Rock include Motor Behavior, Foundations of Kinesiology, Teaching Methods in Secondary Physical Education, Drug Education, Adapted Physical Education, Individual\/Lifetime Sports, and Advanced First Aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research interests include practical applications of teaching methodology as well as the impact of physical activity on physical, mental, and emotional health. He has made over 45 presentations at state and national conventions of his professional societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr T. enjoys traveling and learning about the cultures of other countries. He loves to read about history, hike, and paddle a kayak. Her professional experience includes serving as the intramural sports coordinator in Campus Recreation Services at the University of Maryland (Go Terps!) as well as an assistant director for the University Recreation Department at the University of Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her current professional involvement takes advantage of the nationally recognized outdoor sport and trail opportunities in the state of Arkansas. She remains active in several professional organizations including the NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, and the Arkansas Ultrarunning Association. an Assistant Professor of Health Education and Promotion. He joined UA Little Rock in 2018. Prior to that, he was a visiting assistant professor at Southeastern Louisiana University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He earned his bachelor\u2019s degree from Kenyatta University (Kenya). His master\u2019s degree is from Southeastern Louisiana University and his PhD is from Louisiana State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Otundo\u2019s primary research interests include Pedagogy, Physical Activity Motivation, and Behavior Change. He has worked in higher education at UA Little Rock since 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paprocki earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in business administration and finance from St. Norbert College. His master\u2019s degree in exercise physiology is from the University of Kentucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to coming to UA Little Rock he spent three years working as a strength and conditioning coach for multiple Olympic sport teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses taught at UA Little Rock include Care and Prevention of Injuries, Exercise Wellness & Lifestyle, Exercise Principles and Methods, and Advanced First Aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paprocki owns his own personal training and rehabilitation business and sees clients at multiple fitness centers around the Little Rock area. He spends a lot of his time with his son Elijah and dog Avis. physician by training, completing his bachelor\u2019s in medicine and surgery from Mumbai University, India, followed by residency training in internal medicine. He earned his master\u2019s in public health education at Western Kentucky University, and his doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in health education and promotion with a cognate in epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Cincinnati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is currently a professor and graduate coordinator of Health Education\/Promotion. His 14 years of work experience in higher education include teaching more than 30 courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in health education and public health. Some of the interesting ones have been Controversial Issues in Health Education, Organization and Administration in Health Education and Evaluation of Health Programs. His research interests involve obesity prevention, global health, measurement, online and hybrid pedagogy, and quantitative methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Kanekar enjoys walking, listening to music, and playing chess and ping pong. Education and Promotion, B.S. to M.S."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Early Entry Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Promotion to Master of Science in Health Education and Promotion program is designed to provide a student working towards a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Health Education and Promotion a means to complete the requirements for their undergraduate degree along with a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Health Education and Promotion in a shorter amount of time than the traditional path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate students who are enrolled in the B.S. program in Health Education and Promotion program can apply to Graduate School using an early entry program form for admission into the M.S. program in Health Education and Promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-admission-requirements\">Admission Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Undergraduate students may apply and be accepted any time after completing 75 or more hours of undergraduate coursework. However, at least 90 hours of undergraduate coursework must have been completed by the time the first graduate course is taken.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All applicants must have at least a 3.2 overall GPA. students who have transferred to our program can participate in the Early Entry program provided their relevant transfer coursework (i.e., courses taken at other institutions that are being used to meet our BS\/MS degree requirements) also meet the 3.2 minimum GPA criteria. Applicants with an overall GPA of less than 3.2 are not eligible to participate in the Accelerated BS to MS program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All applicants must complete an application for and be accepted into the Early Entry B.S. to M.S. in Health Education and Promotion program and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/gradschool\/\">UA Little Rock Graduate School<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All applicants must complete an Early Entry Program form and be approved for admission by the School of Counseling, Human Performance, and Rehabilitation graduate coordinator and the UA Little Rock Graduate School. The Early Entry form must be approved by the graduate coordinator before the student begins graduate coursework. Failure to obtain prior approval negates the ability to \u201cdouble count\u201d courses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-graduate-credit\">Graduate Credit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once accepted into a graduate program, students can take up to 12 hours of graduate coursework, which will count towards both the baccalaureate degree and the graduate degree. Individual graduate programs may allow fewer graduate hours to be taken at the undergraduate level\u037e students should check with their prospective program to determine these limits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students must finish their baccalaureate degrees before they complete 15 hours of graduate coursework.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-program-restrictions\">Program Restrictions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To ensure that they follow the proper degree plan, students must meet with a graduate-level advisor upon acceptance to the Early Entry program to map out the graduate courses they will take.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accepted students will have provisional status in the graduate program, pending the award of their baccalaureate degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early Entry students who fail to meet the Graduate School admission requirement of an overall 3.0 undergraduate GPA and no grades below a B once they obtain their baccalaureate degree will be dismissed from the graduate program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students accepted into the Early Entry program will be subject to the same policies as traditionally matriculated graduate students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Early Entry program may not be used in conjunction with the credit reservation program\u037e therefore, no graduate courses taken before admission to the Early Entry program may be applied to a graduate degree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-additional-information\">Additional Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once a completed application has been received by the School of Counseling, Human Performance, and Rehabilitation, the student will be notified whether they have been accepted into the Early Entry program. The program accepts a limited number of students each year, and applicants will be considered for admission on a competitive basis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acceptance into the program indicates a commitment by the student to pursue the MS degree (after the completion of the BS in Health Education and Promotion)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note: Students may request a break of up to two semesters between the completion of their BS and the start of their MS Health Education and Promotion courses per the UA Little Rock Graduate Student Leave of Absence Policy (Policy #509.12). However, if a student does not resume their graduate studies after their approved leave time expires, the student will then be released from the Early Entry Program. Students are eligible for regular admission with a GPA of 2.7.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reference letters: Applicants should obtain two letters of reference from college professors or individuals familiar with their academic work. The writers of the reference letters should place the letters in an envelope, seal it, and sign across the seal. Applicants should collect the sealed reference letters and forward them to the Graduate School.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letter of intent: Each applicant must submit a letter of intent describing the field or specialty within Health, Human Performance, and Sport Management for which training is sought, and describe how the proposed training relates to the student\u2019s career goals.
