The campus family is invited to enjoy an annual back-to-school tradition, Burgers at Bailey, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Bailey Alumni Center.

Students are especially encouraged to stop by and play outdoor games and mingle with other students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Burgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers will be served, as well as drinks and chips.

Derek Boyce, membership services coordinator for the Office of Alumni and Development, said the new student-led initiative, Trojans Supporting Trojans philanthropy council, will also make its public debut at the annual event.

“Burgers at Bailey has, of course, always been open to students, but we are excited even more than usual because of this new initiative,” Boyce said.

The Council is comprised of a cross-sectional representation of students interested in demonstrating the importance of giving back and supporting UALR through their own fundraising efforts. All of the funds raised by the students will support student scholarships and student programming.

Kelsay Williams, a junior communications major from North Little Rock, said giving back helps, not only at the academic level, but also on an emotional level.

“I know how hard it is sometimes to pay for college. We believe that being able to help someone go to school and pay for classes is important, and it also feels so good to be connected to something bigger,” she said.

Council members will have a table at the Burgers at Bailey picnic with Trojan piggy banks available to give to students.

Throughout the semester, students can collect and deposit donations of any amount into the piggy banks. The donations will be turned in to the Office of Alumni and Development twice during the semester.

Donations will be quantified and even tax deductible and will be used to further support student scholarships and programs.

The goal is to show that no donation is too small to make an impact, and that even small change can make a big change, according to Boyce.

Alumni are also encouraged to use the picnic as an opportunity to either renew their membership or join the Alumni Association. The cost for annual membership is $30. UALR Faculty and staff are given a discounted rate of $20.
