Sara Chastain, a registered nurse from Little Rock, has donated $100,000 to create an endowed professorship fund in memory of her father, the late Dr. Charles Chastain, who was the founder of the criminal justice program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy father was more than just a good professor, he was a great dad and generally an all-around good person,\u201d Chastain said. \u201cHe would go out of his way to help those who helped themselves. His legacy lives on in students and professors who strive for excellence in the criminal justice field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chastain is donating the first $100,000 of the $250,000 needed to endow the Dr. Charles D. Chastain Endowed Professorship in Criminal Justice Fund. Once endowed, the fund will establish an endowed professorship in the UA Little Rock School of Criminal Justice and Criminology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDr. Chastain has made such an impact on so many different people in the criminal justice industry,\u201d said Dr. Tusty ten Bensel, director of the School of Criminal Justice and Criminology. \u201cThe goal of this professorship endowment is to help sustain his legacy and his impact on the university, faculty, staff, and students who meant the world to him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose of the fund is to attract and recruit highly qualified individuals as professors, supplement university support for outstanding faculty, and to provide the professor with the resources to continue and further the scholar\u2019s contributions to teaching, research, and public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Chastain, who passed away in 2015, was known as an excellent teacher who carried strong convictions that the liberal arts should be part of the criminal justice curriculum. Originally a member of the Department of Political Science, Dr. Chastain was the founding chair of the Department of Criminal Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Chastain as a guiding force, the department eventually grew into one of the largest criminal justice programs in Arkansas with five degree programs, including the state\u2019s only Ph.D. in criminal justice. He served as chair or coordinator of criminal justice at UA Little Rock from 1975 to 1997. Dr. Chastain retired from UA Little Rock in 2011, after serving a distinguished 39 years as a professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are so thrilled that Sara, his beloved daughter, has chosen to help us honor him with her generous donation to the Charles D. Chastain Endowed Professorship,\u201d said Dr. Mary Parker, a professor of criminal justice who knew Dr. Chastain for decades. \u201cThis is not the first donation from his family to honor Charles. Sara and her mother Judy have helped support a student scholarship in his honor for a number of years, and we are deeply grateful for their continuing generosity. With her latest donation, Sara will help us further honor Charles for all he has done for all of us and will help us continue his legacy for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of Dr. Chastain\u2019s most well-known projects include developing a reentry into society program for inmates at the Wrightsville Unit of the Department of Correction as well as collecting book donations from the UA Little Rock community for the Arkansas Department of Correction libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was a fierce defender of what is right, and he took on some of the most daunting challenges, many of them considered lost causes by others,\u201d Parker said. \u201cHe never backed down, and he never faltered in his beliefs about second chances, bringing those with less opportunity to the forefront, and his certainty that everyone had value no matter their current circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Chastain\u2019s legacy can be seen in the many students that he helped graduate and go on to lead fulfilling lives in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBoth Dr. Chastain and Dr. Parker were always encouraging and supportive, eager to see their CJ students secure career jobs post-graduation,\u201d said Greg Shapiro, a UA Little rock alumnus who is now chief of police for White Hall Police Department. \u201cThey inspired me to join the Student Government Association as a representative for the former College of Professional and Public Affairs. We helped on campus voter registration drives and recruitment events. Because of their sponsorship, I landed internships at LRPD and in Washington, D.C. for the United States Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UA Little Rock officials plan to fully endow the fund by 2027 through donations from alumni and friends of the School of Criminal Justice and Criminology. department\u2019s and her parents\u2019 commitment to education with the creation of an endowed scholarship at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matson\u2019s donation of $25,000 will establish the Quarter Century Excellence Endowed Scholarship for the benefit of rhetoric and writing students at UA Little Rock. The scholarship will recognize the progress of UA Little Rock\u2019s Department of Rhetoric and Writing in its first 25 years of existence, while also honoring the lifelong commitment to learning and education of Matson\u2019s parents, Judith and Jerome Liebman of Cleveland, Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy parents really believed in education, and that is why I wanted to honor them,\u201d Matson said. \u201cI also wanted to honor the Department of Rhetoric and Writing for their many years of helping students. These students are such an amazing group of people who we can continue to support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerome Liebman was a doctor, pediatric cardiologist, and professor of academic medicine at Case Western Reserve University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was very much an educator as much as he was a doctor,\u201d Matson said. \u201cWhat was important to him was teaching. He was the first pediatric cardiologist between Boston and Chicago. He trained a lot of the first generation of pediatric cardiologists across the country. My mother was a nurse, and they met on a medical ward in Boston. She ended up having three master\u2019s degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having struggled to afford a college education themselves, the Liebmans always stressed the importance of education to their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen my sisters, brother, and I were growing up, our parents\u2019 philosophy was to pay for anything that was education related and nothing else,\u201d Matson said. \u201cNeither could afford a college education. My father paid for college by entering the Army Officer Training program, and my mother worked full-time as a nurse while getting her degree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerome Liebman passed away in 2016, and Judith Liebman passed away at the beginning of the pandemic. \u201cThis donation is part of what they left to me,\u201d Matson added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholarship is open to part-time or full-time undergraduate and graduate students. Preference will be given to graduate students until the fund can support two annual awards, at which point the award will be given to one graduate and one undergraduate student. The scholarship can provide financial assistance to rhetoric and writing students for education-related expenses like tuition, books, fees, and room and board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matson has been a staple at UA Little Rock for nearly four decades. She joined UA Little Rock working in the Department of English in 1983. She served as the freshman composition coordinator from 1986 to 1992, when she made a move to the provost\u2019s office to serve as the associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. Queen, has created an endowment that provides Chancellor Christina Drale with the opportunity to support annual priorities that benefit students at the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown, former president, chairman of the board, and owner of Southern LP Gas, has made a donation to establish the Julie Brown Chancellor\u2019s Student Excellence Endowment. The donation, which promotes overall excellence and advancement of students at UA Little Rock, is the first gift made to the university where the funds will be distributed at the discretion of the chancellor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new endowment will make funds available for the chancellor of UA Little Rock to invest in areas of greatest impact and directly support the student experience. Funds may be used to support student travel, research, campus living, lab and classroom enhancements, scholarships, and life circumstances at UA Little Rock for generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis gift is not only incredibly generous, but it is unique in that it covers the full range of the student experience at UA Little Rock,\u201d Chancellor Drale said. \u201cWe can use it to support high impact learning experiences, improvements to the living and learning environment, and also for scholarships and emergency funds to reduce barriers to opportunity. With this endowment, we can truly focus on areas of greatest need and the greatest impact at any given time. I am deeply grateful for this investment in student success at our institution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 1993 graduate of UA Little Rock with a bachelor\u2019s degree in history, Brown has a long history of giving back to the university. In 2016, she created an endowed scholarship in memory of her grandmother, Lou Ellen Gray, that provides scholarships to students from Sevier County. She also supported an emergency student fund in honor of James Hendren, the former CEO and chairman of Euronet, that was created to help students in need at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI truly believe in the transformative power of higher education,\u201d Brown said. \u201cEveryone should have the opportunity to get an education and achieve their goals in life. I was lucky enough to attend UA Little Rock without financial difficulty, but I know that not every person is that lucky. He started his career at the investment firm Morgan Keegan until Raymond James purchased them in 2012. He holds the Wealth Management Specialist designation and is a partner of TMB Capital Partners, formed in 2017 through Raymond James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am honored to be part of the Centennial Campaign Cabinet,\u201d said Bailey. \u201cUA Little Rock is a wonderful asset to our city, and we all benefit from its success. I am grateful to be able to support the institution in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his role on the Centennial Campaign Cabinet, he is currently a member of the Foundation Fund Board and has previously served on the Little Rock Trojan Advisory Council, the UAMS Consortium Board, and as a member of the Hat Club of Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bailey earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in finance with an emphasis in financial management of investments from the Sam M. Walton School of Business at the University of Arkansas. Rogers Excavating, Inc., made the donation March 29 to sponsor the Soils Laboratory in the Department of Construction Management and Civil and Construction Engineering at UA Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis gift will support learning experiences for students in the department\u2019s majors in understanding the role that soils and soil testing are integral to contractors and engineers,\u201d said Dr. Hank Bray, chair of the Department of Construction Management and Civil and Construction Engineering. \u201cIt will support upgrades in equipment and instruction to maintain our leadership role in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meyer leads James A. Rogers Excavating, a family business with 37 employees where Meyer has worked since he was 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was working and attending Pulaski Tech,\u201d Meyer said. \u201cAt 20, I quit going to school and started working full time. My grandfather came to me to say that wasn\u2019t going to work for him. He told me to go to school for construction management. From 2008 to 2015, I was going to night classes at UA Little Rock plus working full time to get us where we are today. I went to school, got an education, and got on-the-job training. In 2016, my grandfather determined he was ready to retire, and that is when I purchased the company from him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meyer said that James A. Rogers Excavating has a history of giving back to the community and sponsors organizations like Special Olympics. His donation to UA Little Rock is an investment in the next generation of construction management students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to give back to the community that has given so much to us and trying to create an atmosphere for the next generation,\u201d Meyer said. \u201cBeing able to sponsor the Soils Lab is not just a construction project. Everything in life starts with a foundation. Soil is the foundation that everything begins with, and I thought it was a good effort. There are so many people who want to go to college and further their education. Ninety percent of the project managers in this area have graduated in construction management from UA Little Rock. I hope there is a return on investment, and they want to give James A. Rogers Excavating a call when they graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meyer also works with his parents, Ken and Sheri Meyer, who both said that Chris is always helping others, but rarely takes credit for his good work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt James A Rogers Excavating, we don\u2019t consider ourselves a team,\u201d said Ken Meyer, senior accounts manager. \u201cWe consider ourselves a family, and there\u2019s 37 members in that family. Chris is very generous and humble. He often helps out employees who need vehicle repairs and need financial help. He pays for them and then allows the employees to pay the company back. He would prefer to sit back in the shadows and let everyone else get the credit and praise. Bizzell, vice president of risk management for Stephens Insurance, Mark Leverett, state district judge for District 31, Scott Ruffner, unit general manager for Pepsi Beverages N.A., and Kenya Sharp, vice president and director of enterprise risk management for Simmons Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woody Harrelson, president of The Hatcher Agency and a 1996 graduate of UA Little Rock, has been selected as the new chair of the UA Little Rock Foundation Fund Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board meets four times a year to oversee the activities of the UA Little Rock Foundation Fund. Members communicate the foundation\u2019s mission and serve as ambassadors of goodwill for UA Little Rock in the community, state, and region, as well as support the mission and goals of the university as it relates to public higher education and UA Little Rock\u2019s need for private and public support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information about the new members:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>J.R. Bizzell<\/strong> serves as vice president of the Risk Management Group at Stephens Insurance. Prior to joining Stephens Insurance, Bizzell spent three years as a research analyst covering the specialty finance industry. He began his equity capital markets career at Stephens in 2011 as a research associate, where he assisted in the development of the restaurant practice. During that time, he was a part of the team that completed seven equity offerings. Bizzell adds further depth and industry experience with balance sheet risks and alternative risk transfer mechanisms. A graduate of Rhodes College, Bizzell serves on the Board of Directors of The Hat Club of Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to serving as a judge, <strong>Mark Leverett<\/strong> worked as a partner and managing attorney for Leverett & Watts Law Firm, a staff attorney for Arkansas Department of Transportation, and a deputy prosecuting attorney for Pulaski County. He earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in political science from Henderson State University and a Juris Doctor from UA Little Rock\u2019s William H. Bowen School of Law. He is also an elder at Saint Mark Baptist, vice chair of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee, and a board member of Positive Atmosphere Reaches Kids and Oscar Washington Jr. Educational Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scott Ruffner<\/strong> is the unit general manager for PepsiCo Beverages responsible for covering 27 counties in central Arkansas. Prior to PepsiCo, Ruffner was a general manager for G.E., leading the Specialty Lighting Division throughout the U.S. and Canada. He is a first-generation college graduate with a bachelor\u2019s degree from Mid-America Nazarene University. He has volunteered with The Allen School, Maumelle Fire Department, Autism Speaks Foundation, and Food for Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>K<strong>enya Sharp<\/strong> has spent most of her career in public service. A native of Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, Sharp has worked on behalf of Arkansans through both the Arkansas Development Finance Authority and the Arkansas Department of Education, focusing on issuance and maintenance of housing and school bonds. For 12 years, she served as a commissioned national bank examiner and federal thrift regulator at the U.S. Treasury\u2019s Office of the Comptroller of the Currency where she made significant contributions, being charged with assessing the safety and soundness of federally chartered financial institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Sharp assumed the role of vice president and director of enterprise risk management for Simmons Bank. She is responsible for the development and implementation of an enterprise-wide risk management framework. Directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New members include Rebecca Flynn, director of development for Women\u2019s Foundation of Arkansas; Justin Martin, vice president at Capstone Banktech; Jonathan Nunn, director of information security at Bank of England Mortgage; Sheena Olson, government relations liaison for Arkansas Children\u2019s Hospital; and Kristie Smith, owner and principal broker for KSmith Properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Danyell Crutchfield Cummings<\/strong>, director of assessment and accountability at Little Rock School District, will serve as the 2022 president of the UA Little Rock Board of Directors. Cummings earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in English literature, a master\u2019s degree in secondary education, and a Ed.S. in education administration and supervision from UA Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All new board members are UA Little Rock alumni who will serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2022. More information on the new board members:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebecca Flynn<\/strong> is an experienced fundraising professional with expertise executing comprehensive development campaigns and large events. A central Arkansas native, she holds a bachelor\u2019s degree from Hendrix College and a Master of Public Administration from UA Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flynn\u2019s work with nonprofits began at the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, where she spent six years raising money for music and music education. She is passionate about her work at the Women\u2019s Foundation of Arkansas to ensure economic security for Arkansas women and girls. She is also involved with the Association of Fundraising Professionals and is a member of the 4300 Club at the Home for Healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Justin Martin<\/strong> earned a Bachelor Business Administration in Finance degree from UA Little Rock and also attended the William H. Bowen School of Law. After graduating from college, Martin worked for a GMAC Finance company and the Small Business Administration, where he helped liquidate thousands of 7A and 504 Loans. His banking career includes vast experience in relationship, portfolio, distressed loan, and Cash Flow management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his current role at Capstone Banktech, Martin is responsible for leading the Business Sales, Bank and Lender Training in conjunction with managing overall risk of the banks and businesses. He is licensed in five states for Trade Credit Insurance and is also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society. Over the years, he has been an active participant in the International Factoring Association and is an active member of his community through volunteering and donating to local charities, schools, and special cause groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jonathan Nunn<\/strong> serves as director of information security at Bank of England Mortgage. In addition to his passion for technology, Nunn is a prominent figure in the central Arkansas special events industry as founder and owner of Klassik Entertainment, a full-service production company that has performed services for more than 500 events over the last eight years. Additionally, he is the principal of Nunn Development Group Inc., which is a rising firm focused on infill development projects within Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A native of Conway, Nunn earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in management information systems from UA Little Rock in 2009. He serves as a member of the Rebuild the Rock Committee, the Little Rock Historic District Commission, and North Little Rock Young Professionals and volunteers for career events with Little Rock School District and National Society of Black Engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sheena Olson<\/strong> earned bachelor\u2019s degrees in criminal justice and Spanish, a Master of Public Administration, and a Juris Doctor, all from UA Little Rock. Most recently, Olson completed her master\u2019s degree in public service from the University of Arkansas-Clinton School of Public Service as a member of the inaugural class of the Clinton School Online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Arkansas Children\u2019s Hospital, Olson represents the health system in its interactions with government officials. She is an advocate for children\u2019s health and well-being as well as healthcare operations and government programs such as Medicaid. She has previously worked in private law practice, Pulaski County Youth Services, City of Little Rock Housing and Neighborhoods Programs, and the Arkansas Department of Human Services<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kristie Smith<\/strong> is the owner and principal broker for KSmith Properties as well as an instructor for the KSmith Real Estate Institute. She earned bachelor\u2019s degrees in consumer psychology and mass communication from UA Little Rock and a Master of Business Administration from Walden University. She has served as an adjunct professor for The University of Phoenix, Strayer University, and Remington College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After working in television and marketing, Smith started her real estate career at Armbrust Real Estate Institute in Denver. With this giving campaign, donors know, for example, that their $100 to the School of Public Affairs will be used to purchase textbooks for students who otherwise wouldn\u2019t be able to afford them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can give the gift of education by visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/wishlist.ualr.edu\/o\/university-of-arkansas-at-little-rock\/i\/2021-wish-list-campaign\/\">wishlist.ualr.edu<\/a> and donating to a worthy cause that will promote student success and retention at UA Little Rock. All wishes are made directly by students and faculty at UA Little Rock. The Holiday Wish List Campaign runs through Dec. 31, and all gifts are tax deductible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the great Holiday Wish List Campaigns is raising money to send 25 students in UA Little Rock Choirs to perform at Carnegie Hall in June 2022. This once-in-a-lifetime trip will be the first time UA Little Rock students have performed in Carnegie Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo say that singing in New York has been a lifelong dream of mine is a complete understatement,\u201d said Kaitlyn Kendrick, a music performance major and Choral Ensemble member. \u201cEver since I was a little girl, I imagined myself performing all over New York and to be able to experience such a high honor like singing in Carnegie Hall is more than I could have imagined I would be doing in my early career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Music has always been my passion, and this is one of the greatest things that could happen for a young singer. Bowen School of Law<\/a> alumna Stacy Duckett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fund will help UA Little Rock students meet basic educational expenses and needs including housing, critical car repairs, food insecurity, licensure exam costs, participation in national honor societies, student travel, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Duckett family\u2019s gift in memory of Stacy will enable us to provide financial support in areas that have not previously had an available funding source, such as food insecurity needs or coverage of professional licensure fees,\u201d said Provost Ann Bain. \u201cThe ability to provide this support can make a difference in a student completing their degree or in accessing timely employment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stacy Duckett Student Support Endowment Fund will honor Stacy Duckett\u2019s memory of living a philanthropic life by helping others improve their lives through education without having to experience great financial burden. Student recipients will be selected by the Office of the Provost at UA Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStacy believed in the transformative power of education, and she would have liked the idea of a student support fund that could eliminate barriers for others pursuing college degrees,\u201d the Duckett family said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stacy Duckett graduated from Hendrix College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 and earned her law degree from the UA Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law in 1995. She was the first TCBY employee who was not a member of the founder\u2019s family, the Hickingbothams, and began working at the company\u2019s first store in 1981 when she was in high school. She later became vice president and assistant general counsel for TCBY Enterprises, Inc. This unique program has empowered participants with a comprehensive understanding of central Arkansas\u2019s challenges and opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A native of Marche, Arkansas, Smith said that it\u2019s an incredible honor to join the Leadership Greater Little Rock program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have attended graduation programs in the past and always had ambitions to be selected over the years,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI\u2019m thankful that I was chosen to be a part of Class XXXVI, and that they waited until we could meet in person to get the true Leadership experience. I think it will help me by understanding the needs of the city in order to incorporate how UA Little Rock can meet that need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing a two-day retreat in October, LGLR participants meet every month at a different central Arkansas location to explore topics through expert speakers, panelists, tours, and group presentations. LGLR is designed to develop effective leaders by enhancing their civic, social and professional awareness to positively impact our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith graduated from UA Little Rock with a bachelor\u2019s degree in international studies and a Master of Public Administration. Before joining the Office of Alumni and Development in 2016, Smith also worked at UA Little Rock as assistant to the dean of the Graduate School from 1998 to 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKristi will be an asset to the class as she has been at UA Little Rock,\u201d said Christian O\u2019Neal, vice chancellor for university advancement. \u201cIn her role as senior director of development and director of the Alumni Association, she has been a great leader and ambassador for the university. Her perspectives will enrich the class as much as she does ours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the community, Smith is a member of the Council for Support and Advancement of Education; Beta Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, a social organization that does a variety of community service activities including the American Heart Association and Alzheimer\u2019s Association; and a board member for the Little Rock Diamond Foundation, the charitable arm of the Little Rock Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kristi Smith, senior director of alumni and development at UA Little Rock, has been selected for the 36th Class of Leadership Greater Little Rock.
