Stacy Willis Scholarship Awarded for 2015-16

The Stacy Willis Memorial Scholarship Committee has selected Ms. Ca’Ron Watkins as the recipient for 2015-16. This competitive scholarship is awarded every year to a student of distinction with a disability at UALR. Congratulations to Ms. Watkins!

At the age of 16, she had an unexpected basketball accident, after which she was diagnosed with a Traumatic Brain Injury.  The TBI caused her to lose various childhood memories of family and friends which includes serving on many boards and committees: High School FBLA (Future Business Leader of America), Little Rock Mayors Youth Board, Leadership Travel to Italy, Girls State at Harding University, Family Vacations and much more. The accident also caused her to miss the majority of her senior year.

Ca'Ron WatkinsUpon graduation from high school, she looked for a university that she could call home, a place where she could be surrounded by friends and family. After enrolling at UALR, she recognized that it was the perfect place for her. She is now currently pursuing a bachelor degree in Mass Communication Motion Picture at UALR. During her academic journey she has had the opportunity to have her name on the Chancellor’s List and the Dean’s List. In her first year as a freshman she received a 4.0 GPA. She continues to maintain a high GPA.

When she is not hitting the books, she devotes her leadership position as an active volunteer within her community where she takes a vital role in helping young overweight girls live a healthy lifestyle. She also offers her time to several non-profit businesses where she takes photos and does extensive computer documentations.  She truly believes that her disability doesn’t make her weak; it just makes her stronger by giving her the determination for success.

Applications for the 2016-17 academic year will be available on the Disability Resource Center website on February 1, 2016.
