Many projects concentrate on people, process, and technology. Unfortunately, projects often fail to fully address the data and information aspects of their efforts. This oversight has caused many projects to fail or produce less than acceptable results, leaving data quality issues that put long-term burdens on business processes and subsequent projects. The quality of data can make the difference between a smooth transition and the ability of business to continue or a rocky conversion and the inability to conduct even basic business activities. The speed and success of projects can be increased by making data quality activities an integral part of any SDLC – the solution\/software\/systems development lifecycle (Agile, sequential, hybrid, etc.). Poor air quality is a major global public health concern, which is only projected to get worse in coming years. A comprehensive understanding of current and potential future air quality and its key drivers spanning from local to global scales is needed to tackle this important problem. This presentation will outline the sources of information that we use to understand air quality, including ground-based measurements, satellites, and models. After giving an overview of these data sources and outlining their strengths and limitations, we will take a look at how they can be used together to give us a better picture of air quality locally and globally. Identifying microbes: the importance of constructing, curating, and evaluating microbial reference databases. Nucleotide sequence and taxonomy reference databases are critical resources for wide-<br>\nspread applications such as amplicon and metagenome sequencing for microbiome analysis, diet metabarcoding, and environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys. Reproducibly constructing, curating, and evaluating nucleotide sequence and taxonomy reference databases is a significant bottleneck for researchers aiming to generate custom sequence-taxonomy databases. Furthermore, database composition can drastically influence our ability to identify taxa. To address these challenges, we<br>\ndeveloped RESCRIPt (REference Sequence annotation and CuRatIon Pipeline), a Python 3 software package and QIIME 2 plugin for the reproducible generation and management of reference sequence taxonomy databases. In this talk, she will provide an overview of the recent interest in low-cost air pollution sensor networks, opportunities and challenges associated with their use, and talk through the applications of machine learning and time series data analysis to increase their utility. This will include a discussion of machine-learning-based sensor calibration algorithms, and data treatment algorithms for time series processing including wavelet analysis and rolling spline. Examples taken from research deployments in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Vancouver, Canada will be provided to demonstrate how these techniques are applied in practice. This project studies how data obtained by members of the public through camera pictures, video feeds, and similar technology can be used to improve public safety without unduly infringing on personal rights such as privacy. To date, this effort has been driven by governments, through CCTV and similar technology, or private companies, through devices such as doorbell cameras. In contrast, our project focuses on how public safety can be enhanced through the use of data that are obtained and contributed voluntarily by individuals and are publicly maintained. For example, individuals might choose to capture the license plate identifiers of the automobiles that drive through their streets. The community might then agree to share this information with policing agencies seeking to track down stolen vehicles, reckless driving, or other criminal activities. We study these issues from multiple perspectives – technological, historical, and legal – with the aim of developing a workable and publicly vetted approach to concerns around privacy and public safety raised by recent commercial and technological developments. Communities that reside in remote areas or at higher altitudes may encounter water scarcity due to lack of water transport infrastructure affecting drinking, sanitation, farming, and other water-based needs. These issues can be effectively solved by employing a hydraulic ram pump, which does not require electricity to function. Hydraulic ram pumps are powered by the water-head available between the source and the pump unit resulting in a negligible operational cost. Ambient intelligence (AmI) encompasses technological infrastructures capable of sensing data from the environments and extracting high-level knowledge to detect or recognize users\u2019 features and actions as well as entities or events in their surroundings. Visual perception, particularly object detection, has become one of the most relevant enabling factors for this context-aware user-centered intelligence, being the cornerstone of relevant but complex tasks such as object tracking or human action recognition. In this context, convolutional neural networks have proven to achieve state-of-the-art accuracy levels. However, they typically result in large and highly complex models that typically demand computation offloading on remote cloud platforms. Such an approach has security- and latency-related limitations and may not be appropriate for some AmI use cases where system response time must be as short as possible, and data privacy must be guaranteed. In the last few years, the on-device paradigm has emerged in response to those limitations, yielding more compact and efficient neural networks able to address inference directly on client machines, thus providing users with a smoother and better-tailored experience, with no need of sharing their data with an outsourced service. Framed in that novel paradigm, this presentation will review the recent advances made along those lines in object detection, providing a comprehensive study of the most relevant lightweight CNN-based detection frameworks, discussing the most paradigmatic AmI domains where such approach has been successfully applied, the different challenges arisen, and the key strategies and techniques adopted to create vision solutions for image-based object classification and localization<br>\n<strong>Recording:https:\/\/us-lti.bbcollab.com\/recording\/c0c5ac52bbc644b8832016a0d9baa949<\/strong><\/td><td>Dr. Al Baker<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>11\/5<\/td><td>INFQ<\/td><td>Dr. Josh McGee<\/td><td>The Arkansas Department of Transformation and Shared Services recently named Josh McGee the state’s chief data officer. McGee, the associate director of the Office for Education Policy in the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas, will lead the state’s effort to bring disparate data together and put it to use to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of state government. Prior to joining the U of A, McGee was an executive vice president with the Arnold Foundation in Houston where he led a team that invested $50 million in data-driven efforts to improve public policy in six states and Washington, D.C. The strategy paired state governments with dedicated university partners who integrated administrative data and deployed research to help policymakers address persistent challenges.
