Faculty, curriculum, and resources for this program are contributed by five departments: Computer Science, Information Science, Engineering Technology, Earth Science, Construction Management, and Civil and Construction Engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program is designed to provide a collaborative, interdisciplinary framework of graduate studies and research in engineering with exposure to the systems approach that is increasingly the hallmark of current research and development in the global engineering community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-program-tracks\">Program Tracks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students enrolled Ph.D. program in Engineering can select one of two tracks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electrical-and-computer-engineering\">Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Electrical and Computer Engineering track focuses on embedded systems, robotics, measurement techniques, design of analog and digital electronics and circuits, power systems, digital systems, coding, software systems, and operating systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ualr.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=21&amp;poid=5574&amp;returnto=2486\">Curriculum: Electrical and Computer Engineering Track<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mechanical-engineering\">Mechanical Engineering<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mechanical and Materials Engineering track focuses on advanced solid and fluid mechanics, MEMS and microsystems, vibration analysis, applied numerical and finite element methods, and smart materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ualr.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=21&amp;poid=5576&amp;returnto=2486\">Curriculum: Mechanical Engineering Track<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-admission-requirements\">Admission Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the UA Little Rock Graduate School admission requirements, the applicants for the Ph.D. program must also meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Education:<\/strong> Applicants must have at least one degree (bachelor\u2019s or master\u2019s) in engineering. Applicants with only a bachelor\u2019s degree must have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.5 on a scale of 4. Alternatively, applicants with a master\u2019s degree in engineering should have a master\u2019s GPA of 3.3 or better.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>Standardized test scores:&nbsp;<\/strong>Applicants are required to take the GRE test. The program includes both thesis and non-thesis options and lends itself to both full-time and part-time study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-program-educational-objectives\">Program Educational Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To provide depth in a subfield of electrical and computer engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To prepare graduates for a diverse range of professional careers as engineers and managers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-admission-requirements\">Admission Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/gradschool\/graduate-application\/\">UA Little Rock Graduate School admission requirements<\/a>, applicants must also meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Applicants must have a bachelor\u2019s degree from an accredited Electrical and\/or Computer Engineering program with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 or 3.3 on the last 60 credit hours. An applicant&nbsp;with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in&nbsp;a closely related discipline with an undergraduate GPA of 3.3 on the last 60 credit hours may be admitted upon recommendation of the electrical and computer engineering faculty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant may submit the GRE scores in support of the application. A 60% percentile on quantitative reasoning will be expected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>English language requirement:&nbsp;International students must satisfy the Graduate School TOEFL or IELTS tests requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant must submit a statement of purpose (not to exceed two pages in length) that indicates the appplicant&#8217;s intended area of research and the desired outcomes upon completion of the program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An applicant must submit at least two letters from referees who are qualified to evaluate the applicants academic potential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-program-requirements\">Program Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering (MSECE) consists of a minimum of 31 credit hours beyond the baccalaureate degree, of which a maximum of six hours can be transferred from a graduate program from another university with the graduate coordinator\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are required to maintain acceptable academic performance. All Master\u2019s course work must be completed with a minimum GPA of 3.0. A student receiving one \u201cC\u201d in the course work will be warned that his\/her academic performance is unacceptable and that the student will be reviewed by the ECE faculty, which will also suggest corrective action. The lab will be used in an upcoming NSF grant (11\/2 due date) that is being developed this semester on active learning in engineering education. The mechanical work in the grant will be made using the specialized machining capabilities in the lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lab supports an active doctoral student (Trigun Maroo) who is developing a drone project for precision agriculture. This project should lead to funding opportunities in Arkansas. The student needs fabrication equipment, space to test the drones, measuring equipment to characterize the devices, and secure storage space for materials and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lab is used to support both Capstone and Mechanical Design classes. In the past, students who need specialized instruction or access when UA Little Rock shop personnel are not available have been accommodated by Dr. Wright in ETAS 530. Having the fabrication space adjacent to the Capstone room (ETAS 529) allows students to assemble their projects and use the tools in ETAS 530, rather than trekking down to the UA Little Rock shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vibration equipment will be used to support the new vibrations course which will be required with the beginning of the Mechanical Systems Engineering program beginning in Spring 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plastics fabrication equipment will be used to support SYEN 2118. Fabrication Lab II, which will be required with the beginning of the Mechanical Systems Engineering program beginning in Spring 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Wright uses this facility to support his independent research projects. For instance, the CASSY robot platforms have been designed and built in conjunction with the ETAS 530. Since the machines can be configured and left set up, Dr. Wright can perform work in ETAS 530 that he cannot perform in the UA Little Rock shop, which has to be reconfigured for student projects on an hourly basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The servers, <a href=\"http:\/\/theduchy.ualr.edu\/\">theduchy.ualr.edu<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/calliope.ualr.edu\/\">calliope.ualr.edu<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/robotics.ualr.edu\/\">robotics.ualr.edu<\/a>, are configured to use the ports in ETAS 530. Although this is not a critical feature of the lab, if the servers were to be moved, ITS would have to reconfigure 3 ports elsewhere on campus to the 144.168.99.xxx subdomain. Right now, 226, 227, and 228 are allocated to these servers and locked to the ports in ETAS 530. This would create disruption in several critical features that support campus and national obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The server, <a href=\"http:\/\/calliope.ualr.edu\/\">calliope.ualr.edu<\/a> is currently serving the course materials for SYEN 2233. This course has large video requirements that need more drive space than ITS provides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The server, <a href=\"http:\/\/calliope.ualr.edu\/\">calliope.ualr.edu<\/a> is currently serving the library of faculty senate minutes until a digital archive can be configured. This has been done temporarily to give the provost&#8217;s office and collections and archives time to develop the plan for taking this task over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The server, <a href=\"http:\/\/theduchy.ualr.edu\/\">theduchy.ualr.edu<\/a>, has been in continuous operation since 1996. It has served as a mirror for NASA&#8217;s first Mars rover video archive in the 2000&#8217;s. Dr. Wright&#8217;s course materials have been linked from many different sites over the years. A google search reveals about 600 external links to <a href=\"http:\/\/theduchy.ualr.edu\/\">theduchy.ualr.edu<\/a>. The server, <a href=\"http:\/\/theduchy.ualr.edu\/\">theduchy.ualr.edu<\/a> also links files for a few publications that Dr. Wright has received and is the primary server maintaining the data archives from past NASA and NSF grants (see data management plan).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The server, <a href=\"http:\/\/robotics.ualr.edu\/\">robotics.ualr.edu<\/a> is not as critical; however, the domain can be used (and has been used in the past) as an entry point for external viewers to see all of UA Little Rock&#8217;s robotics work. The server has been disrupted in recent months by UA Little Rock&#8217;s power outages, which have killed two motherboards.
