The award is a one-of-a-kind, handmade glass heart created by Pine Bluff glass artist James Hayes in the colors of UA Little Rock. The glass hearts symbolize positive, influential support that makes a real difference in the lives of students. The committee reviews the nominations of each college-level winner for the year and determines the winners of the university-level categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proceedings for the selection committee are kept confidential until the winners are announced at the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/facultyexcellence\/\">Faculty Excellence Ceremony<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Arkansas at Little Rock\u2019s Board of Visitors serves a unique role. The Board contributes to the sound growth and development of public higher education through its commitment to UA Little Rock and the University of Arkansas System. College level awards consist of a framed certificate and a cash gift of $1,000. At the university level, a cash gift of $12,500 is awarded for teaching ($10,000 is awarded to the winner and $2,500 is given to that faculty member\u2019s department for faculty development). A cash gift of $5,000 i s awarded for the winners in research or creative endeavors and in public service. In 2011, he organized the annual seminar of the Risk Theory Society, an international research group, and hosted it at UA Little Rock. He\u2019s also editor of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners\u2019 Journal of Insurance Regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the state level, Powell serves on the Arkansas Association of Health Underwriters board as legislative chairman; Arkansas Insurance Commissioner\u2019s Legislative Task Force, which convenes to discuss insurance-related bills; and Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers Education Foundation Board. He frequently provides continuing education lectures to insurance agents on a volunteer basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Powell is serving in his ninth year at UA Little Rock.
