PEAW 1300 originated in 1977 as PEAW 1100 Human Potential, created for campus survival. The course has evolved into a 3-hour, mandatory course titled PEAW (PErsonal AWareness), First Year Experience 1300 and is now the most commonly enrolled First Year Colloquium\u00a0(FYC) course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While academic advisors strongly encourage incoming freshmen to take the course during their first UA Little Rock semester, other students enroll in the course in subsequent semesters due to first semester schedule conflicts, failing the course during the incoming freshmen semester, or realizing that the course is a graduation requirement<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Academic Leader (PAL) Mentor serves as a role model and content expert on the UA Little Rock student experience and provides this expertise during PEAW 1300 class time and co-curricular activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PAL Mentors successfully passed and earned a grade of “B” or above in PEAW 1300 and exhibited leadership skills while enrolled in the course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2022-23: The PAL Mentor program was piloted with four student leaders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023-24: A PAL Mentor is assigned to each of the ten Fall 2023 Face-To-Face general PEAW class sections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-are-the-pal-mentors\">Who Are The PAL Mentors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PAL Mentors were asked two questions (see below).  Scroll to see journey so that they are confirmed in these areas by the end of the semester?” and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>“Why do students deserve you as their PAL Mentor?”<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure experiences and professional expertise that perfectly aligns with the needs of PEAW students. Having navigated a similar academic journey myself, I understand the challenges and uncertainties that can arise during self-discovery, major selection, and career exploration. I can also offer personalized guidance, support, and encouragement. The inspiration I will give new students is to do goal setting and always have a current daily schedule that breaks down classes, study time, and free time, along with looking for college resources that will benefit their college life. Students deserve me as a PAL Mentor for transitional support, personal growth, academic success, and career readiness. It is not just a    phrase, but a principle that I hope to guide you to. There are a million obstacles in college that you will face. Some will be easy, others will be challenging. Fortunately, my role as a mentor is to help and push you through each moment so you can reach your full potential. I will always be sure to be transparent and open no matter the circumstances. The world is constantly evolving, and the school system is with it. UA Little Rock is her alma mater. She received two baccalaureate degrees in psychology and in criminal justice, and a master\u2019s degree in public administration. She also has graduate certificates in conflict mediation and in non-profit organization. Mrs. Ward is married to her soulmate of 22 years. The couple has two adult girls, 5 adult boys, 4 grandsons and 6 granddaughters. Harriet Tubman, Daisy Gatson-Bates and Jewel Ford (her mother) are three of her role models. Her hobbies include traveling, swimming, writing, and eating seafood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What She Brings To You As Your PEAW Instructor:<\/strong> Mrs. Ward’s parents instilled in her the importance of getting an education. She committed most of her career to working with young adults and encouraging them to fulfill their dreams. She believes that all young people have gifts and talents that, when nourished properly, will allow them to live their dreams while contributing to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs. Ward served as program director for the Watershed Inc. and as executive director of the College Station YMCA. She also served as childcare director and executive director of the Carver YMCA. In that position, she  oversaw more than 10 programs, including The Future 500 program for students in 10th-12th grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs. Ward taught College Seminar at UA-PTC and taught the Personal Awareness (PEAW) First Year Experience (FYE) course at UA Little Rock. She  later became the FYE coordinator. While in this position, she and her team wrote the first edition of the book, \u201cThe Making of a Trojan: First Year Experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rosalie-cheatham\">Rosalie Cheatham<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosalie Cheatham is a native of Little Rock and Assistant Professor of French. She is a graduate of UA Little Rock and the University of Illinois.  In addition to full time teaching, she has served as president of the<br>\nUniversity Assembly and held numerous leadership positions on the UALR campus. She served as UALR’s Concurrent Enrollment Coordinator for seven years; has been Executive Director of the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages; and has held leadership positions in other regional and national foreign language organizations. She won the campus Faculty Excellence Award for Service at the university level and at a later time again at the college level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She currently serves as the president of the CHASSE college assembly and is Executive Director of the Arkansas Foreign Language Teachers Association. She has led numerous groups of students on study trips to France as well as a group of faculty supported by a federal grant. She received a Student\u2019s Choice Award from the Student Government Association.
