Lab Safety Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

GIT takes the safety of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors seriously. All individuals working in GIT labs must adhere to generally accepted standards of lab safety. Contact your GIT researcher before engaging in any lab activity that could be deemed unsafe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housed in the old Medical School in downtown Little Rock, GIT featured classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories for teaching and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For nearly three decades, students at GIT studied physical, organic, analytical, and nuclear chemistry; nuclear and atomic physics; electronics; instrumentation; and process control. Though these scientific departments are no longer housed at GIT, graduate students have continued to play a major role, with GIT funding supporting dozens of research and teaching assistantships. Over the years, these students have come from India, China, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Lebanon, Turkey, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, for graduate study in Arkansas, along with many Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1987, GIT joined the main UA Little Rock campus. Today, GIT functions primarily as a service agency for the College of Engineering and Information Technology, the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences, and the Central Arkansas research community, providing lab equipment, computers, machining, design consultation services, and technical support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GIT partners with numerous organizations, ranging from NASA to local industry. GIT offers staff assistance in biosciences, bioengineering, and chemistry; provides design assistance and educational facilities; and houses STRIVE, a summer educational program for Arkansas teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mission\">Mission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Graduate Institute of Technology (GIT) exists to further the research and technological goals of the scientific, engineering, and technology community in Central Arkansas. GIT provides high-level support in the areas of machining, electronics, welding, and woodworking, as well as support for the university\u2019s computational needs, including high speed networking, simulation, and specialty server maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GIT is run by 15 permanent staff members appointed from the technical staff, research associate, and faculty levels. These dedicated professionals work closely with GIT\u2019s clients to increase the quality, scope, and capabilities of projects on campus and in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GIT manages all major scientific and engineering instruments and equipment for the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences and the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology, including the NMR, SEM, MS, and Structural Testing systems. Long sleeves must be rolled up and restrained above the elbow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full-length pants must be worn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long hair must be tied up securely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All jewelry, as well as loose clothing and accessories, must be removed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use hearing protection as necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Do <strong>not<\/strong> work alone.<br>\nDo <strong>not<\/strong> work when you are impaired by exhaustion, anxiety, intoxicants, medications or injuries.<br>\nIf you are not sure how to correctly and safely perform an operation, ask for assistance.<br>\nDo <strong>not<\/strong> leave machinery running unattended.<br>\nDo <strong>not<\/strong> leave a key in a chuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your hands well away from the point of contact between the work-piece and cutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support work-pieces and cutting tools as securely as possible. If you must hand-hold the work to keep it in place, then your setup is unsafe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not remove chips with your fingers. Interested students are encouraged to enroll in the introductory shop class, Manufacturing Processes (ETME 2117 or SYEN 2117). Additional instruction for CNC operation is available in Computer-Aided Manufacturing (ETME 3328).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-design-and-fabrication\">Design and Fabrication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistance is available for research projects and laboratory equipment repairs. After an initial consultation, estimated cost and schedule will be prepared. Once the design and estimate are finalized and approved, then fabrication will begin. Billing will take place once the project is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electronics-shop\">Electronics Shop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Repair services are available for most electronic instruments and electro-mechanical devices. Once problems have been diagnosed, then a repair plan and estimate will be made. Once the plan and cost are approved, then the repair will begin. Billing will take place once the work is finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The electronics shop designs, fabricates, troubleshoots, and repairs electronic devices, with the exception of consumer electronic items. Examples of previous work include plasma generators, test equipment, incubators, plant chambers, and particle counters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located on the UA Little Rock campus, the shop is open from 9:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M., Monday through Friday (except for UA Little Rock holidays). Patrons are encouraged to call in advance for appointments with shop personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Office: ETAS Annex 003B<br>\nHours: 9:00 a.m. \u2013 5:30 p.m.<br>\nContact: Howard Burris<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guidelines:<\/strong> The facility includes test equipment ranging from hand-held devices to lab benches. Equipment can be checked out for use. Equipment to be repaired must be verified for safety first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-machine-shop\">Machine Shop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The machine shop houses both an educational shop and a fabrication shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>educational shop<\/strong> serves as a training ground for UA Little Rock students pursuing degrees in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (EIT). Students are exposed to manual machining techniques, woodworking, welding, and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>fabrication shop<\/strong> provides machining and fabrication services to support the development of new technologies in Central Arkansas. The shop\u2019s staff constructs specialized equipment for researchers not only within the UA Little Rock community, but also at other universities and institutions. The staff also builds prototype parts and testing fixtures for new product developers in local industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located on the UA Little Rock campus, the shops are open from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday (except for UA Little Rock holidays). The educational and fabrication shops are open to authorized students and faculty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For example, we support computers attached to scientific instruments, and we are involved in small- to large-scale research projects that use Linux and open source software. Staff members are familiar with Macintosh and OS\/X.
