Every year, the History Department awards scholarships to qualified students. Visit the UA Little Rock Scholarships home<\/a> for application information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following scholarships are open to current UA Little Rock students. An endowment is also available for guest lecturers and special projects of the History Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scholarships for Undergraduate Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Booker Worthen Scholarship. <\/strong>Awarded to a full-time or part-time UA Little Rock history major with a minimum of 80 credit hours. Academic accomplishment and financial need are considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craig Powell Memorial Scholarship. <\/strong>Awarded to a history major with a minimum of 54 credit hours, the last 15 or more having been taken at UA Little Rock. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. The applicant must demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning. Financial need is also considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David O. Demuth Scholarship. <\/strong>Awarded to a history major with a minimum of 54 credit hours, the last 15 hours or more having been taken at UA Little Rock. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. The applicant\u2019s potential for further study in history is considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Edward Madden and Lucy Dorothy Anson III Award. <\/strong>Given to the outstanding graduating history major as selected by the faculty of the History Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee and Paula Johnson Travel Scholarship. <\/strong>To assist students in pursuing a study abroad program offered by the Department of History. The recipient shall be a full-time student majoring in history, and either a junior or senior-level student. Applicants for this scholarship are to submit a statement of goals associated with proposed travel. Applications based on course of study, academic accomplishment, and financial need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martha Sawrie Stephenson Endowed Scholarship. <\/strong>Awarded to a full-time or part-time student who is enrolled in a minimum of six hours. The recipient must have a declared major in English, history, or political science. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA no lower than 2.5 and no higher than 3.5. Because the scholarship is renewable, it shall not be revoked if the student\u2019s GPA exceeds 3.5 in subsequent years. All things being equal, extreme financial need shall be the determining factor in the selection process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard B. Dixon Undergraduate Scholarship.<\/strong> Awarded to a history major with a minimum of 54 credit hours, the last 15 or more having been taken at UA Little Rock. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. The applicant must demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruby M. Duke Ancient History Award. <\/strong>Awarded to a student majoring in history with a demonstrated interest in ancient history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scholarships for Graduate Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Little Rock Nine Endowed Scholarship<\/strong>. Awarded to a graduate student who is focused on race relations and community development. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. Preference given to students who demonstrate leadership potential. In addition to the scholarship application, applicants must submit two essays: one that is biographical in nature and one that focuses on career goals and a specific plan of study. Each essay should be approximately 500 words in length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C. Fred Williams Scholarship in Public History. <\/strong>Awarded to a full- or part-time graduate student enrolled in the Public History M.A.. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack Freshour Graduate Scholarship. <\/strong>Awarded to a full-time graduate student who is newly enrolled and has an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or a continuing graduate student with a GPA of 3.25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university encourages students to choose a major early on and then get advised by department advisors. The Department of History takes a personal interest in its majors. We want you to do well here and not stay in college longer than you want to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are always better off the more they know about requirements and procedures, and take responsibility for their affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-be-careful-about-choosing-courses\">Be Careful About Choosing Courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of advising is helping students avoid taking unnecessary hours and helping them schedule courses that meet UA Little Rock requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes extra hours result from changes in one’s vocational goals or from just exploring to find out what is interesting. Often they are the result of transferring from one school to another. Students may also select courses from a variety of electives related to geospatial technologies, conservation, and the environment. The course also features U.S. History to 1877. Topics include European colonial empires\u037e the American Revolution\u037e the Constitution of 1787\u037e evolution of a national government and more. needed for careers in archives, museums, historic preservation, and other areas of public history. The program stresses digital skills throughout the curriculum. The M.A. has three components: a core segment with internship and thesis, a traditional history segment, and an applied segment. The 3-credit course counts toward the 36-hour requirement for the history major. A thesis committee consisting of the supervisor and two other faculty members must approve the thesis topic. A thesis committee recommendation is required for the student to graduate with honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-procedures\">Procedures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students should ask the faculty member whose work most closely matches their interests to be the thesis committee chair. The committee must approve a proposal before a student can register for the honors thesis class. The proposal should be approved the semester before the student plans to write the thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal should consist of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A two-page outline of the student\u2019s argument and how they plan to develop the argument<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A timeline for completing the thesis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A bibliography that outlines the relevant secondary literature and the main body of primary sources the student plans to use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-thesis\">Thesis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The student meets with the committee as necessary during the semester and should submit drafts. The thesis should be 30-50 pages and must be, primarily, an analysis of primary sources. The student defends the thesis before the committee and anyone interested in hearing the defense. The committee will confer to determine whether the thesis is worthy of honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On approval of the thesis, the committee chair will submit a form to Records and Registration indicating that a student is graduating with honors in history. The form is due on the same day that final grades are due. These talks offer insight into the workings of historical scholarship and cover a variety of times, areas, and subjects. The format allows for questions and discussion. The museum\u2019s downtown location and adjacent parking lot at Third and Cumberland make the sessions convenient and pleasant to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-schedule\">Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The six sessions of the 2025-2026 Evenings with History series will be held on the first Tuesdays of October, December, February, March, and April, and on the second Tuesday of November. In celebration of Halloween, four faculty members will share their insights on these haunting creatures, each rooted in various regions around the world: Europe, America, East Asia, and the Middle East. By examining how these monsters reflect cultural anxieties, promote social compliance, define otherness, or evoke awe, the presenters will illustrate how the concept of monsters is shaped by specific locations and time periods.<br>Prof. Michael Heil will explore tales of the undead, and attempts to neutralize them, in medieval England. Prof. Katrina Yeaw will delve into the role of jinns in the Islamic world, explaining their role as both entities in the Quran and mischievous figures in popular lore. Prof. Hannah Anderson will analyze the Jersey Devil, the country\u2019s only official state demon, and its origins within the politics of early America. Prof. Yi Ren will discuss the fox spirit, a shapeshifting figure from Chinese folklore, literature, and religious belief, and how it reveals cultural anxieties about gender, desire, and the supernatural in late imperial China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>November 11, 2025 \u2013 Kristin Mann<br>Selling America on Independence: The 1950 Savings Bond Drive and its Replica Liberty Bells<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Savings Bond Division of the U.S. Treasury Department launched an ambitious Independence Bond Drive in early 1950, choosing the Liberty Bell and the slogan “Save for your Independence” as its symbols. Savings bond personnel coordinated with the copper industry to fund exact reproductions of the Liberty Bell for each state and territory. Cast in France, shipped to the U.S., and then mounted by Navy personnel on specially-designed trucks, the bells toured each state from May 15 to July 4, 1950. Arkansas’s Replica Liberty Bell was incorporated into the Bicentennial Memorial at the Arkansas State Capitol in 1975. This talk examines what the Independence Bond Drive reveals about politics, economics, culture, and American identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>December 2, 2025 \u2013 James Ross<br>“The World is on Fire:” Francis Schaeffer and the Making of the Modern Religious Right<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Francis Schaeffer was a Presbyterian minister, theologian, and cultural critic, whose ideas and actions played a pivotal role in the development of the modern American Religious Right. Schaeffer initially focused on building a Christian fundamentalist movement in Europe after World War 2 but eventually developed a critique of modern secularism that garnished him a large evangelical following. He would later become a leading voice in the anti-abortion movement. This lecture examines the development of his ideas and actions from the 1930s to his collaborations with C. Everett Koop, which framed abortion as a central issue for evangelical activism. By tracing Schaeffer\u2019s largely hidden role in the formation of the American Religious Right, the lecture will demonstrate how his ideas and actions shaped a political movement that continues to influence contemporary debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>March 3, 2026 \u2013 Yi Ren<br>The Making of a Propaganda Society in Rural China, 1938-1976<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several months after the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, a \u201cRed Children Mao Zedong Thought Propaganda Team\u201d spontaneously emerged in a rural school in Southeast Shanxi. It was not unique, as countless teams flourished nationwide during this decade, when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Propaganda Department had suspended all operations. This phenomenon raises a key question: if CCP propaganda did not solely depend on top-down administrative orders, what explains the persistent expansion and remarkable sustainability of grassroots propaganda forces in rural China? The CCP\u2019s development of grassroots propaganda forces began as early as the wartime period and throughout the Mao era, from transforming folk artists into revolutionary propagandists to mobilizing local residents for amateur propaganda activities. Through a case study of Southeast Shanxi, this lecture will trace how an expansive grassroots propaganda force grew, thereby explaining the resilience and durability of propaganda work in rural Communist China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-about-the-university-history-institute\">About the University History Institute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The University History Institute is a nonprofit Arkansas corporation created to provide public support for the Department of History at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Funds raised by the Institute are used primarily to support faculty members in pursuing their scholarly research.
