New Research Center for Data Science and Information Quality Opens in Xian, China

The School of Management at Jiaotong University in Xi’an, China, announced the opening of a new Center for Research in Data Science and Information Quality (DSIQ).  The announcement was made at the International Symposium on Data Science and Data Quality held at Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) on August 10-11, 2012, during the opening address delivered by Professor Jianhua Wang, Chairman of the Board of XJTU.

Other conference keynote speakers included Dr. Wei Huang, Management Information Systems Department at Ohio University and Co-Director of the DSIQ Center, Dr. Richard Wang, Director of the Information Quality Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dr. Heng Xu, Associate Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University, Dr. John R. Talburt, Coordinator for the Information Quality Graduate Program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), along with a number of leaders from local industries and government agencies.  Dr. Wang, Dr. Xu, and Dr. Talburt all hold visiting professor appointments at Xi’an Jiaotong University.

The School of Management has about 3,900 of the more than 30,000 students enrolled in Xi’an Jiaotong University, and is rated as one of the top management schools in China.  Just as with the UALR Information Quality Program, the programs in the XJTU School of Management are primarily at the graduate level with an undergraduate enrollment of less than 500 students.   “We see information quality and data science, especially ‘big data’, as growing fields of study and research, and areas where XJTU has the opportunity to take a leadership role in China” according to Dr. Huang.  The photo above shows from left-to-right Dr. Huang, Dr. Talburt, and Dr. Wang by the plaque inaugurating the new center.
