I am excited about joining UA Little Rock as your new Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer. I am grateful for the Institute\u2019s warm welcome and confidence in me. As an alum, I have always admired UA Little Rock and its efforts to tackle the many challenges we face globally through research and advanced technology. I am extremely fortunate to now be a part of a talented team of individuals who contribute to that mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my first few months with the University, I\u2019ve steadily met with many of you during what I call my initial \u201cListening and Learning\u201d sessions. During these times, I\u2019m getting to know you and discovering the strong emotion and enthusiasm you have for what you do here at the University. I\u2019ve gained the privilege of seeing first-hand the hard work that each of you brings to the University each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe wholeheartedly that technology can be a massive force for good, and nowhere is that possibility felt more acutely, or demanded more urgently, than right here. I feel a personal call to contribute my skills to this exceptional team, and help create that lasting impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of my approach is a commitment to collective impact. I am focused on three vital objectives: championing a culture of absolute candor and openness, accelerating the growth of our systems, and establishing robust knowledge-sharing across all critical roles. While these steps are vital for our department\u2019s success, my most important goal is simple: to invest in your success\u2014because when you succeed, we all succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you for your time and attention. I am genuinely excited about the positive direction we are taking; and look forward to partnering with each of you for a long and successful journey ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Phishing in the Age of AI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Phishing remains the most common\u2014and often the easiest\u2014method attackers use to compromise organizations worldwide. UA Little Rock is an attractive target due to its large population of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and retirees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect our community, IT Services employs multiple technologies and automated systems designed to detect and block phishing and scam attempts. We also provide regular security awareness training to help users recognize dangerous messages and respond appropriately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the threat landscape is changing rapidly. With the rise of advanced artificial intelligence tools, phishing emails are becoming increasingly polished. In the past, poor grammar and awkward wording were clear red flags. Today, attackers rely on AI to generate messages that are grammatically perfect and highly convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these improvements, the core strategy of phishing has not changed: attackers aim to manipulate you into clicking a link, downloading an attachment, or sharing sensitive information. To do this, they rely heavily on human psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nearly all phishing messages include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Urgency \u2014 <\/strong>terms such as <em>\u201cimmediately,\u201d \u201curgent,\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201caction required\u201d<\/em> designed to pressure you into acting without thinking.<strong><br><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fear or anxiety \u2014 <\/strong>warnings that something is wrong with your account, your paycheck, or your access.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>False trust \u2014<\/strong> messages appearing to come from someone you know, a supervisor, or a familiar institution.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever you receive an unexpected email, pause and ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Is this message trying to make me feel worried or rushed?<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Is it asking me to take action right away?<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Does the sender or link look slightly unusual?<\/em><em><br><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the answer is yes, there is a strong likelihood the message may be a phishing attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ever feel unsure, do not click anything. <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/itservices\/help\/\">Contact IT Services<\/a> for guidance\u2014we are here to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay safe, and enjoy a secure and peaceful holiday season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phishing remains the most common\u2014and often the easiest\u2014method attackers use to compromise organizations worldwide. These sessions emphasized the importance of practicing good cybersecurity habits whenever we are online at either work or home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These live sessions, which were free to the campus and also available online, offered useful information to help educate and train users. Safety is our top priority and these sessions provided an essential part of campus cybersecurity awareness training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following is a brief summary of the October NCSAM 2025 presentations. We hope that you will join us in 2026 for all of the NCSAM presentations sponsored by IT Services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NCSAM 2025 Presentations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>October 9, 2025<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Veysel Erdag, Chief Information Security Officer at UA Little Rock, provided an informative and interactive session regarding privacy and security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His presentation focused on the basic principles of information security, best practices, latest threats and practical guidance on how to protect personal and professional information in the digital age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>October 16, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IT Services\u2019 team members Jack Tipshus, Senior Networks Engineer, and Thilak Pinninti, Security Operations Center Analyst, led an engaging and interactive Q&A session that explored a wide range of cybersecurity topics. The new system, powered by <strong>OnGuard by Lenel<\/strong>, introduces <strong>tap-enabled, contactless access readers<\/strong> across select buildings to enhance convenience and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New ID cards<\/strong> are now available at the <strong>Donaghey Student Center Information Desk<\/strong>. These cards support both the new tap-to-access technology and the existing magnetic stripe for compatibility with older systems, and they also feature an updated design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students, faculty, and staff can get a new ID card at any time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anyone who needs <strong>after-hours access<\/strong> to a building scheduled for the new system will need a new card, which will be issued <strong>free of charge<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those not requiring access to the new readers may obtain a replacement card for <strong>$15.00<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Project progress:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New ID cards with tap functionality began printing in <strong>September<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New access readers have been installed in <strong>Nursing<\/strong>, the <strong>Student Leadership Center (SLC)<\/strong>, and <strong>Ross Hall<\/strong>, with additional installations occurring weekly through <strong>December<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Access coordination:<br><\/strong> Facilities Management will be reaching out to departments and individuals whose areas are included in this phase of the project. In joining the OSG, older legacy hardware that has been removed from production is used to contribute to the processing and storage capacity of the <a href=\"https:\/\/osg-htc.org\/services\/open_science_pool.html\">Open Science Pool<\/a> (OSPool).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fair-share access is a core principle of the OSG. Millions of Central Processing Unit (CPU)hours delivered annually on the OSG are contributed by university campuses, government-supported supercomputing facilities, and research collaborations. Sharing allows individual researchers to access larger computing resources and large organizations to keep their utilization high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Distributed High \u2013 Throughput Computing (dHTC) resources accessible through the OSG are contributed and organized by the community and governed by the OSG. dHTC is a computing paradigm that aims at maximizing useful computation using any available resource located anywhere on the planet. Work is split up and then scheduled on multiple different machines in the pool utilizing all available compute power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conjunction with OSG, the OSPool is designed to support high throughput workloads by providing a source of computing capacity that is accessible to any researcher affiliated with a United States academic institution. UA Little Rock supports the OSPool by running OSG research jobs on its shared legacy hardware. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, the UA Little Rock OSG nodes (i.e. connection or redistribution points) have contributed over 10,003,784 computer hours to the OSPool. Workday provides a streamlined, intuitive interface that gives the Trojan community real-time access to the information they need to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-workday-student-brings-to-campus\"><strong>What Workday Student Brings to Campus<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A Unified Experience:<\/strong> Students, faculty, and staff can now access (with the correct security) academic, advising, and financial information through one secure portal. Anytime, anywhere, and on any device.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Streamlined Student Processes:<\/strong> Registration, academic progress tracking, tuition payments, and financial aid tasks are now easier to complete and view in real-time.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enhanced Advising Tools:<\/strong> Faculty and advisors can view course history, academic plans, and degree progress to guide students toward timely completion better.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Real-Time Data and Insights:<\/strong> Departments gain access to accurate information that supports smarter, faster decision-making and improved student outcomes.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-thriving-together-in-a-connected-campus\"><strong>Thriving Together in a Connected Campus<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This launch represents years of planning and collaboration among <strong>IT Services,<\/strong> <strong>Records and Registration, Admissions, Financial Aid, Bursar, and Academic Advising teams, along with critical contributions from Athletics, International Student Services, Disability Resource Center, Institutional Research, and many other campus partners.<\/strong> Together, these groups have worked diligently to test, train, and transition to the new Workday Student environment, ensuring a smooth and successful go-live for our Trojan community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Training and support resources continue to be available to help everyone get comfortable navigating Workday. The <strong>Faculty and Advising Dashboard<\/strong> includes quick guides and short videos to help simplify processes such as verifying participation, managing course rosters, and supporting students through registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workday is designed to grow with UA Little Rock. Regular updates and innovations will continue to enhance the experience for students, faculty, and staff, aligning with our mission to <strong>empower learning, strengthen operations, and support student success<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis launch connects every part of the student experience,\u201d said IT Director of Enterprise Applications & Business Engagements Colleen Godley. \u201cFrom advising to the bursar\u2019s office, it gives our teams the tools and visibility to better support every Trojan\u2019s success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This achievement is part of a larger success story; Project One, the University of Arkansas System’s multi-year initiative to implement Workday across all campuses, was recently honored by the Project Management Institute (PMI) as the winner of the PMI Engineering and Technology Project Award and a Project of the Year nominee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This recognition celebrates the vision, collaboration, and innovation behind uniting our campus and <strong>21 other institutions and business practices<\/strong> into one connected system for students and employees.
