Bowen School of Law Successfully Implements Innovative Admissions 360 Program

Bowen School of Law

The UALR William H. Bowen School of Law is once again proving why it is ranked as one of the most innovative law schools in the nation.

As of December 6, the law school has received twice as many applications for its Fall 2017 class as it received as of the same date in 2015. As a result, the law school has its largest early applicant pool since 2012. Bowen is one of the few law schools in the country that has seen a significant increase in its applicant pool; nationally, LSAT takers have not increased and law school applications are down 1.7%.

The law school’s new, innovative pre-law programs, collectively referred to as Admissions 360, deserves some of the credit for attracting the attention of prospective students. Admissions 360 includes resources for prospective law students and pre-law advisors and a webinar series that covers topics such as “Preparing for Law School,” “Financing a Legal Education,” and “Creating a Competitive Application.” The resource guides, launched in June 2016, have already been downloaded more than 700 times, and more than 200 prospective students have participated in the first five webinars.

The law school created Admissions 360° to provide all prospective students, especially veterans, non-traditional students, and those attending smaller colleges and universities, equal access to the pre-law resources they need to help make them be successful in realizing their dream of attending law school.

The law school’s latest increase in applications follows a particularly strong 2016 admissions cycle. For the Fall 2016 entering class, applications increased by 20%, and the entering class had the highest median undergraduate GPA of any class admitted in the last five years and the highest median LSAT score in the last three years. Despite the swell in interest in Bowen, the law school does not plan on increasing its first-year class size.

“We’re thrilled by our success in attracting the interest of so many prospective students,” said Bowen Dean Michael Hunter Schwartz. “The increase in the applicant pool is not only a product of Admissions 360, but is also a result of the innovative curriculum developed by the faculty, the low average debt of our graduates, and the recognized need for legal services in Arkansas.”

In the past year, Bowen was named a Best Practical Training Law School by National Jurist Magazine, a Low-Debt Law School by US News & World Report, a Best Value Law School by preLaw Magazine (for the sixth time), and a top-10 law school for producing government lawyers and a top-20 law school for producing prosecutors and public defenders.

Seats for the 2017 entering class are still available and prospective students are encouraged to apply before the March 15 application deadline.
