On April 3, 2018, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., the UA Little Rock OER Task Force will host an Innovative Educators webinar: Open Educational Resources: Supporting Student Success In The Classroom With Quality Free & Reusable Content.
The webinar will be held in Library 509. Feel free to bring your lunch.
Today’s college students have much to contend with regarding financial obligations and paying for their education. While tuition prices have increased 63% between 2006 and 2016, college textbook prices have increased 87% over the same timeframe, with average annual costs to students for books and fees around $1250 per year (Bureau of Labor Statistics TED: The Economic Daily, 2016). We know that students and their parents can have a difficult time supporting these fees and often turn to alternative methods to attempt to purchase or rent their books and sometimes merely choose not to buy the materials, leaving themselves at a disadvantage in the course. Open Educational Resources (OER) is one solution to the problem of costly and restricitve course materials. They are by definition free. Free to use in any educational setting, free to edit and repurpose as an instructor sees fit and free of cost to the faculty and the student. Participants will leave with the ability to define what Open Educational Resources are and their role in affordability and access to higher education. Curated collections of OER will be shared along with practical strategies to incorporate into assignments and courses.
