You might find it useful to use \u201csave as\u201d and name the form according to the universities you\u2019re researching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some colleges and universities that offer graduate school fee waivers for McNair Scholars. If you are applying through a central system, you will need to coordinate with the school on how to get around paying the fee. If a college or university is not listed here, it is still possible that you may get a fee waiver by submitting a request, if the information is true, with a letter from Financial Aid that states something to the effect of: “This student is a fully funded student at our institution and qualifies for full Pell Grant funding. It would be a financial hardship for this student to have to pay a fee waiver for applying to your institution.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-graduate-school-ratings\">Graduate School Ratings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduate school ratings help you to determine the tier” in which the school you are considering may be. This is important in the process of deciding where to apply as you need to understand how competitive the program is, what their requirements for admissions may be, and approximately how many applications they receive a year. The higher rated a program, the more competitive their application process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Institutional Research Level – <a href=\"http:\/\/carnegieclassifications.iu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnegie Rating<\/a> – This is a useful rating to know to help determine how much research is happening at the university of interest. Generally, not always, when it comes to a PhD, you want to attend an R1 or R2 school, particularly if you would like to later teach or research at an R1 or R2 school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-funding\">Funding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You should never have to pay for a Ph.D. Therefore, whether you go to school “in state” or “out of state”, “public” or “private”, your cost of attendance should be the same: zero. Applying early to a program will help you with this, as it often puts you in the running for university or department sponsored funding (fellowships or assistantships). Sometimes, however, you need to apply directly to the school, to various departments, through Human Resources, through the graduate school, or other venues to be considered for an assistantship (which is a means of funding). If it is not crystal clear in the application, ask the graduate school at the college or university how students apply for funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So that you do not rely solely on school funding, you can apply for external funding for graduate school. Students who come with their own funding can almost choose what college they want to attend. Funding for master’s level programs is often harder to obtain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mcnairscholars.com\/funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McNair Scholars<\/a> and other associated funding options<br>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gradschool.cornell.edu\/fellowships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornell University Fellowship Search\/Database<\/a><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsfgrfp.org\/fellows\/fellow_opportunities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Possible STEM funding<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gre-test-prep\">GRE Test Prep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your performance on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\/revised_general\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)<\/a> will not make or break your chances of graduate school acceptance. However, it can change it considerably depending upon where you are applying, your field of interest, and your overall GPA. To do well on the actual test, you need to be prepared and know what is often asked, how it is asked, and how to answer the questions in a way that will get you a higher score. In addition to studying, taking practice tests are important in helping you achieve a higher score. Mentors provide in-depth support to undergraduates who are interested in attending and completing their doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, PsyD). It is very similar to what you might imagine a very strong mentor might provide to graduate students to assist them in learning the ins and outs of graduate study and supporting them in the completion of their degree, including introducing the mentee to various networks and colleagues and advising them as best as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their first summer, students complete a Summer Research Internship, of about 30 hours each week (including workshop attendance and preparation for graduate school application) from about the middle of May through about the first week of August, resulting in a research paper of approximately 25-pages, or what is respectable in the field of inquiry. We ask that mentors meet one-on-one and in-person with their mentee at least once a week throughout the Summer Research Internship and to guide them in the requirements of research in their field and how to write a research paper (mirroring scholarly articles). During the academic year, a similar set-up is available for returning scholars and altered accordingly to fit within the additional demands of an academic schedule – for research completed in the Fall and Spring, we ask that mentors meet with mentees once a week or every other week for about an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentors are additionally asked to assist students in their preparation of presenting their research, including for a McNair conference either in July or September and in September at our Annual Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program Research Symposium. Black uppercase with red lowercase i.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The TRiO programs, a collection of designated federally funded programs to prepare low-income and first-generation students (students from families whose parents do not have a four-year college degree) for college success, began nearly 50 years ago with the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> and a pilot program called Upward Bound. With the vision of Lyndon B. Johnson\u2019s \u201cWar on Poverty\u201d – and in collaboration with several leaders of the time, including, but not limited to, Martin Luther King, Jr. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YADvHEFAE28\">listen to an audio clip<\/a> of Johnson and King talking about the conception of these programs \u2013 begins at 2:04) – Congress passed the Higher Education Act of 1965<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> and solidified the importance of a college education not only for those who were financially capable of attending, but for all students regardless of their financial status. Through programs from the \u201cGreat Society\u201d, the Johnson Administration emphasized the importance of the higher education system and believed that these institutions were places that could facilitate the rising of the poor above their financial circumstances so they could become equals in a society that was stricken with inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since that time, there have been several amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965, some of which have resulted in the removal of programs (Title I, Community Service and Continuing Education Programs<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a>), the narrowing of programs (Strengthening Developing Institutions<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a>), or the building up of programs within the bill. Despite funding challenges and changes within the Higher Education Act of 1964, with the help of TRiO students, staff, and community members, the TRIO programs have not only survived, but have grown from one program in 1964<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a> to eight programs today<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u201cTRiO\u201d refers to the first three programs of this nature that fell under the Higher Education Amendments of 1968, Upward Bound (UB or Classic UB – 1964), Talent Search (TS – 1965), and the then newly proposed, Special Services for Disadvantaged Students (SSDS – 1968), now known as Student Support Services (SSS). The remaining five TRiO programs include Veterans Upward Bound (VUB – 1972), Educational Opportunity Centers Program (EOC- 1972), Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair – 1986), Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS – 1990), and Training Program for Federal TRiO Programs (TRiO Staff Training)<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn7\">[7]<\/a>. class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, including territories and Freely Associated States of the U.S.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Admitted to and enrolled at UA Little Rock in a 4-year program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have at least a 3.0 GPA at the time of application and by the end of Spring 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have at least 60 credit hours completed by the end of Spring 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Students must also meet one and\/or two<\/strong> of the following Federal Requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ope\/trio\/incomelevels.html\">Low-income<\/a> according to federal guidelines (verification federally required) AND a first-generation college student (parent(s)\/guardian(s) do not have a 4-year college degree by the time you are 18).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A member of a historically underrepresented group in graduate education (federally defined as American Indian\/Alaskan Native, Black\/African American, Hispanic\/Latino, and\/or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Two-thirds of our participants must be determined to be low-income and first-generation college students and one-third of our participants may be a member of an underrepresented group in graduate education, as defined in number 2 above. Preference is given to rising juniors and rising seniors with a strong academic record in their area, enthusiasm for their field, and who intend on completing a research doctorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-research-internship\">Research Internship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The UA Little Rock McNair Scholars Program accepts 26 students, including returning scholars, each year to participate in a Research Internship; new scholars are required to complete their research during the 12-week, full-time Summer Research Internship (SRI) and returning scholars are provided the opportunity to complete research during the academic year. Students who are eligible and who want to enroll in and complete graduate study, with the objective of completing doctoral (e.g. Ph.D., Ed.D., Psy.D.) study, are encouraged to apply. All students selected for the McNair SRI will be required to be available for workshops and meetings during business hours from May 18, 2026 through August 7, 2026. Scholars may be required to travel over one or two weekends during the SRI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-application-requirements\">Application Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/ualr.edu\/forms\/d\/1_ZS9-Epk1IKXAvpFJqgf974_xluTZ5Lq648bkInNqFs\/viewform?usp=send_form\">Faculty Recommendations<\/a><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will need to ask three UA Little Rock faculty members for recommendations to support your application and supply them with the necessary information and access to the forms. Two of these faculty members should be in your major and\/or your desired field of concentration for graduate school. One faculty member can be from any discipline. <strong>If possible,<\/strong> <strong>all faculty recommendations should come from faculty who possess a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., Psy.D., or DSW).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All recommendations to support student applications are to be completed and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/ualr.edu\/forms\/d\/1_ZS9-Epk1IKXAvpFJqgf974_xluTZ5Lq648bkInNqFs\/viewform?usp=send_form\">submitted online using this form<\/a><\/strong>. The forms do not enable saving, so you must complete in one session. You will need to copy and paste your written recommendation, where applicable, into the indicated field(s).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal Statement\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You should prepare this statement in advance and have it ready to copy and paste into the online application. The field reads as follows:<br><br>Please submit a brief essay (300 word minimum to 600 word maximum) on your academic and career plans and goals: both your content and structure are important.<br><br>Prompts that should be answered:<br><br>– Describe your dedication\/passion to your field and what first sparked it.<br><br>– What areas\/topics in your discipline\/major do you find most interesting\/fascinating? Explain why.<br><br>– What are your long-term academic goals? How will McNair assist you with them?<br><br>– What do you hope to gain from participating in the UA Little Rock McNair Scholars Program?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-supplemental-materials\">Supplemental Materials<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>College Transcripts from all institutions applicant has attended prior to UA Little Rock. Unofficial transcripts printed from BOSS, or the equivalent will be accepted.<em><br><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signed copy of the 2023 Federal income tax form <em>(if you are under the age of 24, please turn in a copy of your parent\/guardian’s federal income tax form).<br><br><\/em>Typically this will be a Form 1040. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The McNair program is one of eight federal TRIO programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. TRIO programs were designed to provide support to students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds so that they can complete their four-year college degree. The McNair Scholars Program was added in 1986 to compliment that goal by supporting undergraduate students who want to attend graduate school and pursue a doctorate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UA Little Rock <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/mcnair\/eligibility\/\">McNair Scholars Program<\/a> provides research and student success opportunities for juniors and seniors who plan to advance their education and skills through competitive graduate programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At UA Little Rock, 26 Scholars are supported each year in our enriching Research Internship Program. In their first year, Scholars participate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/mcnair\/summer-research\/\">Summer Research Internship<\/a>. In subsequent years, Scholars are able to complete their research requirement during the academic year or the summer. We prepare students to compete with the best. These relationships allow Scholars to meet other faculty members and attend\/present their research at local or national conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-academic-presentations\">Academic Presentations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholars are required to present their research and travel to one McNair conference each year as a group. Additionally, Scholars have the opportunity to travel to present at local and national conferences in an academic setting. Each year the UA Little Rock McNair Program hosts a two-day Symposium so all participants can present their research to faculty in their field (their committee) and additional guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-graduate-school-admission-preparation\">Graduate School Admission Preparation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, a strong application for graduate school admission requires at least a year of preparation. Scholars are provided resources to determine what graduate programs might be a good fit, feedback on their graduate school application materials, and support and guidance to prepare for graduate school entrance exams. They also receive assistance for securing graduate school funding through fellowships and assistantships. McNair"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dr. Ronald McNair was born October 21, 1950 in Lake City, South Carolina. Dr. McNair received a bachelor’s degree in physics from North Carolina A&T State University and a Ph.D. in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. McNair and his wife, Cheryl Moore McNair, have two children, Reginald and Joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. McNair was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1978. He first flew as a mission specialist on STS 41-B in 1983, thereby becoming the second African American in space. He logged 191 hours flight time and was responsible for deploying one of the communication satellites for that mission. Dr McNair was chosen as a mission specialist on Challenger STS 51-L, which was destroyed one minute and 13 seconds after its launch. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. Established by the U.S. Department of Education under the Federal TRIO Programs, the federally-funded program is named for astronaut and Challenger crew member Dr. Ronald E. McNair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program provides educational experiences that prepare first-generation and low-income or historically underrepresented undergraduates for doctoral study. It also provides intensive support to Scholars for external research opportunities and for application to graduate study after completing their bachelor\u2019s degree. Scholar support includes GRE preparation and advising, tutoring, academic counseling, and financial aid counseling. Scholars also receive help with securing financial support for graduate school, and advising on how to successfully complete the admission process and, ultimately, graduate school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-about-ronald-e-mcnair\">About Ronald E. McNair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ronald E. McNair (1950-1986) \u2014 A Brief Biography<\/strong><br>\n<strong>Edited and used with permission from University of Texas, Arlington’s McNair Scholars Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-early-life\">Early Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ronald Erwin McNair was born October 21, 1950, in the small community of Lake City, South Carolina. A studious child, he began school at age 4 and at age 9 successfully challenged the “whites-only” borrowing privileges at the local library. Ronald’s mother (a teacher) and father encouraged him and his brother, Carl, to set high academic standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McNair attended Carver High School where he played football and basketball, ran track and excelled at baseball. He also played clarinet and saxophone. Valedictorian of his senior class, McNair applied to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Initially intending to major in music, McNair changed to physics after a counselor encouraged him to pursue a career in science. As a junior he participated in a year-long exchange program with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After graduating magna cum laude from North Carolina A & T in 1971, he began his graduate studies at MIT on a Ford Foundation Fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-career\">Career<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1976, McNair earned his Ph.D. in physics from MIT and married Cheryl Moore. He then accepted a position with Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, Calif., a site for advanced laser research. While at Hughes, McNair decided to apply to the space program after receiving a recruiting brochure from NASA. In 1978, he learned that he was one of 35 individuals accepted for training as a mission specialist (astronaut).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1984, McNair served as a crew-member aboard the space shuttle <em>Challenger<\/em>, where he was responsible for operation of the remote manipulator arm. Two years later, he was one of seven selected for the second <em>Challenger<\/em> flight, scheduled for January 28, 1986. One goal of this mission was to release a satellite to photograph Halley’s Comet. Just 73 seconds after take-off, the <em>Challenger<\/em> exploded and the shuttle plummeted into the Atlantic Ocean. There were no survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although only 35 at his death, Dr. McNair had received considerable recognition, including various fellowships, several honorary doctorates, and numerous awards. His quest for excellence inspired the ambitious goals of the program that honors his memory: the Ronald E.
