Double Major to Present at National Science Conference
UALR sophomore Shanoa Miller of Maui, Hawaii, will present a poster at the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) conference in Salt Lake City.
The presentation, “Creating a Geoprocessing Model for Maui’s E-911 System,” is the result of work she did last summer as an intern at Akimeka LLC in Maui.
Miller’s project is helping emergency operators more quickly and accurately pinpoint the location of 911 callers using wireless phones through a program she wrote that integrates the latest Maui neighborhood maps into a geographic information system (GIS) that is displayed on the operators’ computer screens.
Miller is pursuing a double major in information science and biology with an emphasis in molecular biotechnology. Last year, she worked as a researcher in UALR’s Nanotechnology Center. Her position at Akimeka was arranged through the Akimeka Internship program, which promotes the advancement of students who are studying science and engineering and have a connection to Hawaii.
