UALR Backstage Expert Joe Carner Dies
Joseph Carner, who created UALR’s program in technical theater and founded its Multimedia Services Center, died Sept. 22 in Jacksonville, Fla. He was 91.
After receiving a master’s of fine arts degree from Yale, he attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville to study architecture. Carner began a career in professional theatre in 1947, specializing in lighting and set and scene design. He was a faculty instructor at the University of Richmond and taught technical theater and lighting at Goodman Memorial Theatre at the Institute of Art in Chicago.
He and his late wife Margaret klmoved to Little Rock in the 1950s where he worked on the Titan II Missile Project and later was a park development designer for the city of Little Rock. He developed designs for the Fair Park Golf Course, Burns Park, the auditorium at the Arkansas Art Center, and several offices and wild animal habitats at the Little Rock Zoo.
He joined UALR’s faculty in 1969, where he founded the Multimedia Services Center on campus and was an assistant professor of theatre production and lighting design.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Hollywood Cemetery, 303 Hollywood Ave. in Hot Springs.
