Dean’s Forum Hosts Tide-to-Go Creator

Roy Sandbach, developer of Procter & Gamble’s Tide-to-Go stain remover stick, will be the fall 2011 College of Business Dean’s Forum featured speaker at 5:30 Monday, Oct. 24. His topic: “Innovating for Billions.”

SandbachSandbach’s presentation will include how his company built billion dollar brands and the billions of people who represent the opportunity for businesses to grow, particularly those in China, India, and other populous developing countries.

UALR’s biannual Dean’s Forum, which is free to attend and open to the public, will be held in the Donald W. Reynolds Center for Business and Economic Development.

Business Dean Anthony F. Chelte invited Sandbach to discuss Procter & Gamble’s innovation strategy to include the Tide-to-Go story and the complications related to expansion of standard practices in the developing world. A research fellow with Procter & Gamble, Sandbach’s patent on Tide-to-Go was introduced in 2006 and created a $50 million business.

With patents on many new-to-the-world products, Sandbach has worked in research and development at Procter & Gamble for almost 30 years, Tide To Gowith most of his time spent in Frankfurt, Rome, and Brussels. His career has spanned the global range of Procter & Gamble product categories.

His current interests are in the holistic development of new products, notably in the developing world.

In 2010, Sandbach was appointed visiting professor of creative design at Cranfield University’s School of Applied Sciences in the United Kingdom. He is also visiting professor of industrial design at Central St. Martin’s College of Art & Design in London, teaching innovation management both there and at Imperial College in London. He is the only working UK scientist with a professorship at a leading UK art and design college.

In northern England, he has championed the development of Design Network North, a vibrant community of designers, and has contributed to innovation management and MBA programs at Northumbria University Business School. Recently, Sandbach has been a key contributor to the development of a city-region innovation strategy for Manchester, the largest city in northern England.

He is a director of North Tyneside Learning Trust, a new collaboration between schools, universities, and employers with the aim of more formally providing coordinated inspiration and opportunity for all local schoolchildren. It is the largest learning trust in the UK.
