One of her first major projects will be to assist in the creation of the university\u2019s new five-year strategic plan.\n\n\u201cI am extremely happy and excited that I was chosen as the chancellor\u2019s chief of staff, which means they trust that I am very qualified to assist the chancellor in her vision for the university,\u201d Dorn said. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to be a part of that. I\u2019m looking forward to all that I will learn in this position and to contribute to the university community in a meaningful way.\u201d\n\nPrior to joining UA Little Rock, Dorn worked as the communications director in the School of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Human Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where she supervised a staff of five to manage all communication functions for the school.\n\n\u201cI became interested in working in higher education because I know the impact that higher education had on my life as far as opening and expanding my mind and the wealth of opportunities that I wouldn\u2019t have without higher education,\u201d Dorn said. \u201cI just want others to be able to experience that and know the power of furthering your education.\u201d\n\nShe also previously served as the communications director and part-time deputy for the Jefferson County Sheriff\u2019s Office.\n\n\u201cIn order for me to be effective in my position and represent the sheriff\u2019s office correctly, I felt I needed to understand from the deputy\u2019s perspective, so I completed the part-time certification in conjunction with my full-time job as communications director.\u201d\n\nDorn earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in mass communication\/broadcast journalism from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and a Master of Public Administration from UA Little Rock. She said she\u2019s grateful for the opportunity to work for the alma mater that helped her so much.\n\n\u201cI\u2019m happy to be able to give back to the university that helped establish who I am today,\u201d Dorn said. \u201cThey invested in me as a student. I get the chance to come back to a place that helped enhance my skills, abilities, and talents. I am excited to put that degree to use, and I look forward to getting people excited about the research taking place at UA Little Rock.\u201d\n\nIn the new position, Nielson will be responsible for writing research articles, editing grant proposals, social media management, website maintenance, and serving as editor for <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/orsp\/research-in-the-rock\/\">Research in the Rock<\/a>, UA Little Rock\u2019s annual research magazine produced by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.\n\n“ORSP is very excited to have Stevie on board,\u201d said Lydia Perry, ORSP grant writer. “Stevie will be a great asset to principal investigators at UA Little Rock, and be able to showcase the wonderful research, creative projects, and community service programs that happen at UA Little Rock.”\n\nNielson joins the university from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, where they worked for 14 years as the city desk clerk, copy editor, online editor, and newsletter editor. Nielson helped design and launch the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette\u2019s Sunday Digest and Coronavirus Update newsletter.\n\nA graduate of Little Rock Central High School, Nielson earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in English with a writing concentration from Rhodes College. They will also graduate from UA Little Rock this semester with a Master of Arts in Professional and Technical Writing. After the ceremony, the large group of family and friends gathered outside for a group picture, which is when Howard made his move.\n\n\u201cI told everyone to get in a group picture,\u201d he said. \u201cShe was turned away from me, and I got on one knee so when she turned around she saw me proposing. Everybody knew except for her. We had it all planned out!\u201d\n\nDaniels was absolutely thrilled as she got to spend the moment surrounded by her family – her mom, dad, grandmother, sisters, and niece.\n\n\u201cI was shocked,\u201d Daniels said. \u201cI did not expect a lot of our family to be there. I was nervous and shocked and excited.\u201d\n\nThe couple met during a football game at Jacksonville High School when Daniels was an eighth grader and Howard a freshman. Their love story blossomed during high school to the point where they decided to attend the University of Arkansas at Little Rock together.\n\n\u201cWe wanted to stay in Arkansas, and we had heard a lot of good things about UA Little Rock,\u201d Howard said. \u201cIt was an easy decision for us to come to UA Little Rock.\u201d\n\nWhile the couple enjoyed attending college together, the one drawback was that they had to separate in order to study because \u201cwe have completely different study habits,\u201d Daniels said.\n\n\u201cWe couldn\u2019t be around each other because we would distract each other,\u201d Howard added.\n\nLooking back, Daniels, who is a business student ambassador and Student Affairs Diversity Initiatives mentor, realizes there were hints – lots of family visiting, everyone dressing up, her family\u2019s insistence that she get her nails done – that something special was going to happen on Saturday in addition to commencement. In my opinion, the reason I got the award is for all the support I received from my parents since I\u2019m a first-generation student.\u201d\n\nTorres Sanchez said her parents, Jose Torres and Teresa Sanchez, couldn\u2019t continue their education because they had to find work to support their families. She serves as the youth council officer for LULAC Council 771, UA Little Rock\u2019s chapter, and has been working to start LULAC student organizations at high schools in Central Arkansas.\n\nTorres Sanchez was also among a group of UA Little Rock students who <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/news\/2022\/07\/07\/national-lulac-conference\/\">attended the LULAC National Convention<\/a> this summer in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Now over a decade later, he graduated with a <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/academics\/program\/graduate\/public-history\/\">master\u2019s degree in public history<\/a> on Dec. 17.\n\nMitchell\u2019s thesis explores written content in <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopediaofarkansas.net\/entries\/das-arkansas-echo-newspaper-8496\/\">Das Arkansas Echo<\/a>, a German-language newspaper based in Little Rock during World War I. The Echo is the only surviving newspaper source about Arkansas\u2019s German community, as well as the only insight into what the German press was printing during the war.\n\nMitchell got his inspiration for the topic from the year he spent as a foreign exchange student in Vienna, Austria, in high school.\n\n\u201cThat experience really cemented the language for me,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cWithout it, I wouldn\u2019t have been able to do this research at all, since most of it was in German.\u201d\n\nMitchell focused his research on the years between 1914 and 1918, comparing the tone and content before and after the United States entered the war to see how the newspaper handled the growing anti-German sentiment in the country during the shift.\n\nResearch also came from, \u201cDas Arkansas Echo: A Year in the Life of Germans in the Nineteenth-Century South\u201d by Kathleen Condray, associate professor of German at the University of Arkansas. The book examines the topics covered during its inaugural year, including the newspaper\u2019s crusade against prohibition, advocacy for German schools and language, and stance on immigration.\n\n\u201cOverall, I\u2019d say the program prepares you for the field really well, especially when it comes to research,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cI even had a graduate assistantship for the Center for Arkansas History and Culture downtown to supplement my archival learning and give me hands-on experience.\u201d\n\nHe organized his information on a database, the idea of which he credits to Dr. Charles Romney, professor of history and graduate coordinator of the public history program.\n\n\u201cI collected about 300 articles, so it was a lot to keep track of,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cThe database gave me key searchability, helped me identify common themes, and what was going on. The commission has investigated 38 documented cases of lynching in Maryland.\n\n\u201cThey are trying to uncover more information about each of these lynching cases and then provide venues for people to talk about these episodes, in particular for descendants of the victims and perpetrators to talk about their feelings and reactions and how these crimes have affected their lives,\u201d Wiebelhaus-Brahm said. \u201cThe committee is also prompting memorials to occur in the form of informational plaques at the sites of the crimes.\u201d\n\nAs the commission wraps up its work in 2024, commissioners will submit a final report to the governor and General Assembly with recommendations to move the commission\u2019s work forward. During a Nov. 12 conference in Baltimore, Wiebelhaus-Brahm presented his suggestions on how to maximize the commission\u2019s impact based upon his research on truth and reconciliation efforts in different parts of the world.\n\n\u201cTruth commissions, in many ways, are the start of the conversation about the past,\u201d Wiebelhaus-Brahm said. \u201cTruth is often needed before other things can happen to address the past. Truth commissions produce a final report with a history of what was investigated and recommendations about what else should be done about the past and how to prevent these things from happening in the future. Research suggests that the process should be broadly open to the public so members of the affected communities can offer suggestions for recommendations.\u201d\n\nWiebelhaus-Brahm, author of the books \u201cTruth Commissions and Transitional Societies\u201d and \u201cExploring Truth Commission Recommendations in a Comparative Perspective,\u201d added that truth commissions often recommend the creation of a follow-up body to coordinate and monitor implementation of the commission\u2019s recommendations.\n\n\u201cInvolved parties can also keep in contact with local and state politicians to ensure that the commission is not the end of the conversation about racial violence in the state and that there are further conversations about how to improve race relations,\u201d he added.\n\nNo state-initiated truth and reconciliation commissions have taken place in Arkansas, but Wiebelhaus-Brahm said efforts are moving forward to create memorials for lyching victims in the state.\n\n\u201cIn Maryland, the commission is helping to prompt memorials,\u201d Wiebelhaus-Brahm said. \u201cIn Arkansas, the memorial effort has been moving forward. She is a first-generation college student who will be the first person in her family to earn a master\u2019s degree.\n\nHandcock wrote about how the COVID-19 pandemic encouraged her to make important changes in her life. She had always dreamed of getting her master\u2019s degree, so Handcock took a new and challenging position at UA Little Rock where she can take advantage of the tuition discount for university employees.\n\n\u201cCOVID helped me refocus and renew my love of learning,\u201d Handcock wrote. \u201cIt helped me pause and see what was possible. Every Arkansan will also deliver hams to their 14 mobile sites in Central Arkansas during the week of Christmas.\n\n\u201cI am very excited by this donation,\u201d said Tori Martinez, office administrator for Every Arkansan. \u201cIt’s been a blessing to serve so many families this Christmas. We look forward to doing more together with the Little Rock Wrestling team in the future.\u201d\n\nMembers of the Little Rock Wrestling Team were on hand for seven hours on Friday, Dec. 16, to hand out hams, but the best part of the day for the wrestlers was loading the 203 donated hams into Every Arkansan\u2019s van.\n\n\u201cIt feels really good to know that these hams are going to a good place and that our efforts are going to help feed those in need,\u201d said Mason Diel, a redshirt freshman wrestling student-athlete from Hartland, Wisconsin.\n\nThis is the fourth year that the wrestling team has held their annual ham sale fundraiser and the third year of partnering with Every Arkansas to provide hams for Central Arkansas families. Hams weigh from 8-10 pounds, feed up to 16 people, and cost $50.\n\nAustin Schafer, assistant wrestling coach, said the coaches were on site for an extra four hours on both Dec. 15 and 16 to get all the hams ready for pickup.\n\n\u201cThis was my first year enjoying the ham sale, but it\u2019s the fourth year so the team has got a pretty good system down,\u201d Schafer said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a great idea to give back to the community around us.\u201d\n\nThe wrestling team met this year\u2019s goal of delivering at least 200 hams to those in need. Last year, they delivered more than 125 hams to Every Arkansas. He has a loving family and had a very successful career in media sales spanning more than four decades.\n\n\u201cAfter leaving KATV as the local sales manager here, I finished that career and was faced with what I want to do,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cSomething that had always been nagging me was to get my degree. Life had taken that opportunity away from me earlier when I was in Washington, D.C.\u201d\n\nA native of Joliet, Illinois, Thompson joined the U.S. Navy and worked in an experimental surgery unit and then enrolled at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 1973.\n\n\u201cThere I really started to mature and find my sea legs, as you will,\u201d he said. \u201cThe doctors were very supportive of me going to college. That is why I went to Georgetown, but I was married and had a child and work. I couldn\u2019t sustain a decent lifestyle and go to Georgetown, which was very demanding.\u201d\n\nIn 1975, Thompson left Georgetown with an associate degree and a strong desire to one day finish his college education. His career took him from Washington, D.C., to Chicago, to Dayton, Ohio, to Orlando and New York City. His final stop brought him to Little Rock in 2010 to work at KATV.\n\n\u201cI had a great run in TV, but I\u2019m done,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cI had a deep love of history, and I got that while I was at Georgetown. One of my instructors was the department head, and I fell in love with history after taking her class. I decided to come to UA Little Rock as a history major.\u201d\n\nThompson joined UA Little Rock in 2017 and graduated with his bachelor\u2019s degree in history in 2019. He will graduate this semester with a <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/history\/m-a-in-public-history\/\">master\u2019s degree in public history<\/a>, which brings his journey to complete his college education to an end 50 years after he started.\n\n\u201cIt\u2019s something that I feel I should have done a long time ago,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s basically been unfinished business as far as my life is concerned. So, getting this degree is a culmination of a lifelong search for my own comfort with myself. It\u2019s a culmination of something that I felt I should have done a long time ago and should have been determined earlier in my life. However, it feels just as good now. This is who I should have been all my life, a person with a master\u2019s degree.\u201d\n\nOne of his favorite experiences in graduate school was participating in a class taught by Dr. John Kirk, George W. Donaghey Distinguished Professor of History, which examined the criminal cases of Robert Bell and Grady Swain, two African American teenagers who were convicted of the first-degree murder of Julius McCollum and sentenced to death. Bell and Swain confessed to the crime, but later said their confessions were forced. The class wrote a paper about the case that received the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/news\/2022\/04\/18\/lucille-westbrook-award\/\">Lucille Westbrook Award<\/a> from the Arkansas Historical Association for the best article manuscript on an aspect of local history.\n\n\u201cThat class really grabbed me, and I learned so much about going through archives and dusty, old records,\u201d he said.\n\nThompson wrote his thesis, \u201cThe Fight for Freedmen\u2019s Minds in Arkansas,\u201d about the development of educational programs for African Americans in the state in the 1860s and 1870s.\n\n\u201cArkansas was one of the last states to develop a public primary and secondary school system for African American students,\u201d Thompson wrote. \u201cWhile education was for the most part privatized, an important philosophy for educating African Americans was developed early by the Free African Society and the AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church that influenced Arkansas public and private Freedman education.\u201d\n\nIn the 1860s and 70s, there were millions of newly freed formerly enslaved people who needed an education with competing methods of how that should work. Samuel Armstrong, founder of the Hampton Institute, created an educational model called the Hampton-Tuskegee Model, which emphasized character building through manual labor and learning occupational skills. The AME church strongly contested the Hampton-Tuskegee Model.\n\n\u201cThe AME church put forth the philosophy that they wanted Freedman taught in the classical manner, emphasizing subjects like English, literature, and algebra,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cThey wanted to train a middle-class population with doctors, teachers, and lawyers. The Hampton model emphasized teaching people manual labor skills \u2013 how to be a blacksmith, how to sew. They taught young girls how to work in houses as maids. It was being put out there that this was necessary because industrialists needed a large workforce.\u201d\n\nThompson dedicated his thesis to his mother, who was the daughter of an AME preacher and an inspiration for him to complete college.\n\n\u201cI also did this for my mom who always believed in me when I didn\u2019t believe in myself,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cShe used to sit in the kitchen with me to do my homework when I was a child. She instilled in me that desire to get it done, and that was one of the real drivers in writing my thesis.\u201d\n\nWith graduation approaching, Thompson is thankful to history professors James Ross, Barclay Key, Jess Porter, Edward Anson, Carl Moneyhon, and Marta Cieslak for inspiring him to succeed.\n\n\u201cMy experience here has been absolutely magnificent,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t say enough good things about the history department and the professors. These people are first rate, and I know because I came from one of those fancy east schools. I had a very successful career, but this is something different that I needed to do and I\u2019m so glad I did it. I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that I would end up living in Arkansas and getting a master\u2019s degree at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. They also promote development of the skills that students will need as responsible and accountable members of the nursing profession, advocate for high quality health care, advocate for and contribute to advances in nursing education, and develop the potential for maximal growth in future professional roles of Arkansas nursing students.\n\nNiki Buckman, a student from Quinlan, Texas, was elected as the District 1 director during the ANSA convention held in Hot Springs. She will represent and advocate for nursing students in Arkadelphia, Conway, Hot Springs, Little Rock, and Magnolia. She will also serve on the annual convention, fundraising, and awards committees.\n\n\u201cI am ecstatic to be able to serve on the ANSA Board of Directors,\u201d Buckman said. \u201cI look forward to working with everyone in District 1.\u201d\n\nOnce she graduates in 2023 with an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree, Buckman will work for the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. She is a recipient of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Professional Scholarship Program, which provides financial assistance to students in the health care industry. She plans to join the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program in the fall 2023 semester.\n\nIt\u2019s been a lifelong goal of Buckman\u2019s to become a nurse, one that got put on hold while she pursued a career in sales and marketing in the natural pet food industry in Colorado and California. She and her husband moved to Arkansas to be closer to family in 2020, and Buckman decided it was time to pursue her nursing degree.\n\n\u201cNursing was always my plan,\u201d she said. \u201cI have wanted to work in health care ever since I was little. My dad was sick when I was growing up.
