First-generation student plans to give back to community through career as social worker

As the first person in her family to go to college, Mercades Parker, a native of Ashdown, Arkansas, wasn’t sure she could afford to go to college without taking on a large amount of student loans. Now she will graduate this spring with a Master of Social Work degree and begin a career of giving back to others.

Blake Hughes, a member of the Chancellor’s Leadership Corps (CLC), will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and advertising with a certificate in professional sales. He would like to start his own marketing consulting firm and eventually get his master’s degree in business administration. He also has a knack in placing first in statewide competitions.
