Frank received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His primary area of research is philosophy of science, in particular the nature of scientific reasoning. Additionally, he works on issues concerning ethics and critical thinking, especially in relation to new and emerging technologies. He has a wide variety of teaching interests, including metaphysics, epistemology, and applied ethics. He is the co-host of the podcast Philosophy on the Fringes, which explores the philosophical dimensions of the strange and the mundane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She received her Ph.D. in 2020 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work intersects with several subdisciplines, including technology ethics, medical ethics, action theory, 19th century philosophy, and philosophy of religion. Her current projects focus on ways in which emerging technologies threaten to undermine essential conditions for human flourishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Fritts teaches several courses at UA Little Rock, including Ethics and Society, Technology Ethics, Philosophy of Science, and 19th Century Philosophy. Combine your passions and create a degree path that works for you. This degree is offered both <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/philosophy\/interdisc\/\">in person<\/a> and fully online. The online degree is ideal for students who need a flexible class schedule. Students must be formally admitted into the online program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-online-degree-concentrations\">Online Degree Concentrations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each student will work with their advisor to develop an individualized program of study. Students will select three concentration areas. At least two of the concentration areas must be from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/chasse\/departments-degrees\/\">College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education<\/a> (CHASSE). The third area may be located from CHASSE or the other two colleges, CBHHS or CSTEM. href=\"mailto:jxmcauliffe@ualr.edu\">jxmcauliffe@ualr.edu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jana McAuliffe joined the UA Little Rock Department of Philosophy & Interdisciplinary Studies faculty in fall 2016. She specializes in social and political philosophy, particularly questions of race, class, and gender. In each round of competition, teams take turns analyzing ethical cases and responding to questions and comments from another team and a panel of three judges. An ethics bowl differs from a debate competition in that students are not assigned opposing views; rather, they defend whichever position they think is correct, provide each other with constructive criticism, and win by demonstrating that they have thought rigorously and systematically about the cases and engaged respectfully and supportively with all participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winners of the Arkansas High School Ethics Bowl go on to compete in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nhseb.org\/mission\">National High School Ethics Bowl (NHSEB)<\/a>, hosted at UNC-Chapel Hill every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from NHSEB surveys show that the ethics bowl teaches and promotes ethical awareness, critical thinking, civil discourse, civic engagement, and an appreciation for multiple points of view in students. Teachers also believe students involved in ethics bowl have improved standardized test scores compared to non-participating students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies Programs at UA Little Rock host the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/philosophy\/hs-ethics-bowl\/\">annual Arkansas High School Ethics Bowl<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ethical-cases-used-in-the-ethics-bowl\">Ethical Cases Used in the Ethics Bowl<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cases used in each year’s Regional High School Ethics Bowls (including the Arkansas HSEB) are written by the National High School Ethics Bowl Case Committee and cover a wide range of ethical topics drawn from current events and real-life situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ethics-bowl-matches\">Ethics Bowl Matches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A match consists of two rounds. In the first round, the moderator will announce the case for the round and copies will be distributed to the teams and judges (neither will know ahead of time which case was assigned to the round). The first team (determined before the round by coin flip) will be given a question by the moderator and, after a brief conferral period, will have <strong>6 minutes<\/strong> to present an answer. The second team then has 3 minutes to comment on the first team’s presentation, after which the first team has 3 minutes to reply to the second team’s commentary. The panel of judges then has up to 10 minutes to ask the first team questions. In the second round, a new case is announced and the same format is followed with the two teams in opposite roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arkansas High School Ethics Bowl consists of three matches (or six rounds). Matches take place simultaneously, and the same cases and questions are used for each round happening at the same time (i.e., every team presenting in Match 1, Round 1 will answer the same question on the same case, and so on for subsequent rounds and matches).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scoring-matches\">Scoring Matches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Judges are given a detailed set of criteria to use when evaluating the performance of both teams in a match. Judges’ scores are divided into categories addressing a team’s initial presentation, commentary on the opposing team’s presentation, response to commentary, response to judges’ questions, and overall respectful dialogue. This <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/114\/2025\/07\/match-scoring-doc-remediated.pdf\">Scoring Criteria sheet<\/a> explains the details and point ranges of each scoring category, and this list of <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/philosophy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/114\/2006\/09\/2017-NHSEB-Judge-Rules-and-Guidelines-PDF.pdf\">Rules and Guidelines for Judges<\/a> further explains how judges are asked to evaluate teams’ performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-participants\">Participants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>High school students between 9th and 12th grade\u2014whether in public, private, charter, magnet, independent, dual enrollment, or home schools\u2014can participate in a team at the High School Ethics Bowl. Teams are composed of at least three students, with no more than five students on a team participating in any one match. High school teachers usually serve as the coach or team advisor. It is permissible for parents or others to coach a team if approved by the high school administration. Other participants include judges, moderators, and general event volunteers. These roles can be fulfilled by community members and local professionals as well as faculty and graduate and undergraduate students from nearby colleges and universities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Want to start an Ethics Bowl team? Let us know!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-overview\">Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Differing from long established debate competitions, the Ethics Bowl is a venue that encourages collaborative engagement in serious moral discourse. Teams consider and discuss cases drawn from current events, which range from social and political issues (voting rights, capital punishment, gun control), to environmental concerns (sustainable growth and development), to professional worries (hiring practices, workplace safety), to issues arising in the classroom (grade inflation, plagiarism). Teams have a couple of months to prepare the cases, though they do not know which of the cases they will discuss nor the specific question posed for a given case until they face another team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teams from high schools across the country compete at the regional level, and winners then go to the national competition where one team emerges victorious. Emphasis is on reasoning and the ability to engage in civil, rational discourse rather than on persuasion and rhetorical technique. The scores of three judges who are recruited from both the academy and the local community determine winners. The competition can be fierce and the winning margins tight. Chapter\u2019s Mission at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock is Five-Fold:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>to recognize and award distinction to students who display great interest and achieve scholarship in philosophy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to promote student interest in research and advanced study in philosophy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to provide opportunities for the publication of student research papers of merit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to encourage and facilitate the professional spirit and friendship between exceptional students of philosophy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to popularize interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-membership\">Membership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-general-membership-requirements\">General Membership Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate students at UA Little Rock are eligible for active membership in Phi Sigma Tau if they meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completion of a minimum of 24 hours of college coursework<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completion of two 3-hour courses in philosophy with an average GPA greater than 3.0 in those courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overall GPA greater than 3.0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Students wishing to be members of Phi Sigma Tau must fill out a directory card and pay a one-time initiation fee (currently $25) to the national office.  Submit your directory card and check to the Faculty Advisor, Dr. Michael Norton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" The Team is the only Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl team in Arkansas and is among the top teams in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/giving\/product\/ualr-ethics-bowl-team\/\">Your support<\/a> will help provide funding for students to travel to regional and national competitions each year. You can make a <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/giving\/product\/ualr-ethics-bowl-team\/\">tax-deductible donation<\/a> to support our team’s participation in future competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-an-ethics-bowl\">What is an Ethics Bowl?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Differing from long established debate competitions, The Ethics Bowl is a venue that encourages engagement in serious moral discourse. Teams consider and discuss cases drawn from current events, which range from social and political issues (voting rights, informed consent, death penalty, gun control), to environmental concerns (sustainable growth and development), to professional worries (hiring practices), to issues arising in the college classroom (grade inflation, plagiarism).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teams from colleges and universities across the country compete at the regional level and winners then go to the finals where one team emerges victorious. Teams have at least a couple of months to prepare the cases, though they do not know the actual question associated with the case until they face another team. <em>Emphasis is on reasoning and the ability to engage in moral discourse rather than on persuasion<\/em>. The scores of three judges who are recruited from both the academy and the professions determine winners. The competition can be fierce and the winning margins tight. Still, the atmosphere is unceasingly civil and collegial. Our 2014-2015 team qualified at the regional level to compete at the national competition, making them one of the top 32 ethics bowl teams in the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-ethics-bowl-team-members-think\">What Do Ethics Bowl Team Members Think?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>“Going to Nationals was a truly enlightening experience. The main team was composed of many individuals who had not competed on this level before, but we were all able to develop effective strategies to engage with each other and others during the competition. The teams we competed against were all of phenomenal caliber, and it was interesting to take in what they had to say and develop dialogue around their perspectives and ours. There is always something to learn about any ethical issue we go over, in terms of application of a theory and argumentation. The\u00a0adage of ‘iron sharpens iron’ comes to mind, because as we went through our rounds, it felt as if we were made better as a team for having to engage in such a meaningful way with the other teams and vice versa.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI think the best part is that the environment of Ethics Bowl is congenial and collaborative, certainly when you are first discussing cases with your team to develop arguments, so I do not ever feel upset or threatened by ideas I disagree with; instead, I am able to ask the smart questions needed to have others flesh out their ideas and effectively communicate with them to determine what message is trying to be conveyed before I give a response.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt is one of the most fun and rewarding competitive and academic experiences I have had. Exploring my thoughts with the help of the team and coaches, building friendships with everyone involved, and competing with all of this support is a gratifying experience, and I am lucky to be involved in it.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>“During the Ethics Bowl, I got to learn more about what ethics is and how to discuss ethical issues in a competitive and respectful manner. This club helped me to do better in the classroom. I can honestly say I have really developed a love for philosophy because it allows me to question the world around me and my place in it.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>“As I look back at my journey with the ethics bowl team, my main takeaway is the confidence I have developed. Before this journey I constantly second-guessed myself, and as a result I was never comfortable speaking up in class and in everyday conversations. He received a Ph.D. in philosophy from Villanova University in 2011, and a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School in 2003. He specializes in philosophy of religion and contemporary Continental philosophy \u2013 particularly phenomenology and deconstruction. His research draws on deconstruction and recent materialist perspectives with the goal of constructing a philosophical understanding of religious traditions through concrete practices, with an emphasis on pluralism. the Department of Philosophy at the University of South Dakota. Before that, he worked for several years at universities in Michigan and in the UK and Europe. Originally from London, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Warwick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Robinson’s teaching and research have been concerned primarily with three main areas, the first being the European traditions of thought that emerge from Kant and post-Kantian philosophy \u2013 especially 19th and 20th century Continental thinkers (Nietzsche, Foucault, Deleuze). Secondly, he has strong interests in modern process philosophy (James, Bergson, Whitehead). Finally, he is interested in the interconnections between these two areas. This last area of research has revolved around a critical exchange between phenomenology and perspectives drawn from poststructuralist and process thinkers. It has centered principally on temporal themes, especially the concepts of \u2018event\u2019 and \u2018process\u2019, across a range of contexts and problems.
