The revitalization was due in part to the overwhelming enthusiasm sparked by the university\u2019s public event for the Great North American Eclipse on April 8, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Gregory Guisbiers, associate professor of physics and astronomy, plans to hold about 10 observations annually, offering both daytime and nighttime events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daytime sessions will allow visitors to observe the sun, including sunspots and eclipses, while nighttime viewings will focus on planets, meteor showers, and galaxies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-history\">History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"312\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2025\/05\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"UA Little Rock observatory\" class=\"wp-image-816\" style=\"width:201px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2025\/05\/Picture1.png 312w, https:\/\/ualr.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2025\/05\/Picture1-204x272.png 204w, https:\/\/ualr.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2025\/05\/Picture1-113x150.png 113w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The observatory in its original location, in 1970.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The observatory\u2019s dome was originally built in 1930 by newspaper executive Frederick Allsopp for his astronomy-enthusiast wife. In 1970, Dr. J.W. Downs donated the observatory to UA Little Rock, where it was installed on Stabler Hall during the tenure of Chancellor Carey V. Stabler. In its prime, the observatory hosted up to 70 events a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the success of UA Little Rock&#8217;s eclipse events in 2024, Dr. Guisbiers received approval from university leadership to begin restoration efforts of the observatory. Student learning objectives and goals are the same for both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in the program of Physics and Astronomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning Objective 1:<\/strong> Students will demonstrate basic knowledge in all the major areas of physics, including mechanics and relativity, electromagnetism, statistical thermodynamics, optics and waves, quantum mechanics, and atomic physics. This learning goal addresses critical thinking, information technology, competency in mathematics, and competency in the philosophy and methods of science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning Objective 2:<\/strong> Students will demonstrate basic competency in independent research and effective communication skills. Students must be able to define a research question, develop a research plan, conduct research, and to present the research work effectively. This learning goal addresses critical thinking, information technology, and competency in the philosophy and methods of science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve our mission and objectives, our department supports a variety of activities. The department offers the basic physics foundation courses (i.e., Electronics, Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Quantum Mechanics, and Statistical Thermodynamics) and a variety of elective classes (i.e., Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences, Medical Physics, Solid State Physics, and Optics) at least once per academic year. The program also offers special topic classes as needed. We also offer an Astrophysics elective, but it is only offered every other year. We also host a student organization, which is involved in a variety of public outreach and service activities on and off campus. Faculty are also heavily involved in research. Research topics include micro- and nano-fabrication, advanced characterization techniques, solid state physics, materials for energy applications, bio-materials, multifunctional materials, smart materials, thin film coating technologies, composite materials, and materials for space exploration. The first is Extragalactic Astrophysics and the second is Galaxy Structure and Dynamics. The Arkansas Galaxy Evolution Survey (AGES) collaboration is involved in research in the areas of structure, morphology, and dynamics of nearby galaxies, and the dynamics of clusters of galaxies. Areas of particular interest include, the nature of central super massive black holes, the amount and distribution of dark matter in galaxies, spiral structure, and barred galaxies. They can conduct basic research at a university or a national laboratory, or applied research in an industrial or commercial setting. Experimental physicists usually work in a lab and seek to test hypotheses and theories, to make discoveries of new phenomena, or to develop new applications of ideas. Theoretical physicists use math to develop explanations of experimental data, formulate new theories, and make new predictions hypotheses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, a third branch of physics has emerged, computational physics, in which high-performance computers are used to do calculations which can not be done analytically, or to simulate experiments that are difficult or impossible to perform in a laboratory. Students desiring a career in astronomy normally major in physics. The B.S. in Physics requires 36 credit hours including at least 28 credit hours of upper-level physics courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bachelor-of-arts-in-physics\">Bachelor of Arts in Physics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ualr.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=20&amp;poid=5313\">Bachelor of Arts in Physics<\/a> is for students who plan to specialize in graduate school without sacrificing the advantages of a liberal arts undergraduate education. This degree is also suitable for premedical students and others who do not plan professional careers in physics, including those students pursuing a career in secondary education. The B.A. in Physics requires at least 27 credit hours and offers students several options. Each option includes core courses plus additional courses appropriate to the particular concentration area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-minor-in-physics\">Minor in Physics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ualr.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=20&amp;poid=5315\">minor in physics<\/a> requires at least 18 credit hours of physics courses. At least 10 credit hours of upper-level courses are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-minor-in-astronomy\">Minor in Astronomy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ualr.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=20&amp;poid=5316\">minor in astronomy<\/a> requires at least 19 credit hours of astronomy and physics courses. An additional three upper-level hours of physics or astronomy courses are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-education-minor-and-physics-teacher-licensure\">Education Minor and Physics Teacher Licensure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are interested in becoming a physics teacher, consider pursuing an <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ualr.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=20&amp;poid=5341\">education minor and physics teacher licensure<\/a> through the university&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/education\/education-minor\/\">School of Education<\/a>. Students interested in teaching at the junior high school and high school levels in public schools across Arkansas must be licensed by the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education in a state-approved subject area. UA Little Rock programs offered by content area in collaboration with the School of Education are designed to prepare students for licensure and successful entry into the teaching profession. transformed our view of the natural world. Studying physics gives students the opportunity to better understand the laws governing the world and allows students to be part of impactful and innovative research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UA Little Rock physics majors are highly trained in experimental techniques, mathematical analysis, and computation and have the knowledge base and flexibility to meet numerous career challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We offer a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in physics. We also offer minors in physics and astronomy.
