As a Professor for the Department of Psychology, Dr. David Mastin has played a vital role in student advancement and academic development while continuing to advance his discoveries in academic research. Every year Dr. Mastin works with students as an advocate and mentor for his students and their research interests.
Among one of his chief areas of research and development is his establishment of the Sleep Hygiene index. Dr. David Mastin, Dr. Robert Corwyn and Jeff Bryson (Professor of Psychology at Fielding Graduate University) originally presented the Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI) in the research paper entitled “Assessment of Sleep Hygiene Using the Sleep Hygiene Index,” which was published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine in 2006.
Dr. Mastin developed the 13 self-administered questions to assess the practice of sleep hygiene behaviors. The index is applied extensively in sleep research and is heavily cited in scholarly journals and popular publications around the world. Due to worldwide application, the SHI has been translated into 11 languages: Turkish, Russian, Persian, Italian, Hindi, Korean, Formosan Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, and Lithuanian! Furthermore, the index has been adopted for use by the Johnson NASA Space Center in Houston, TX.
In fact, the index has enormous potential to not only add to the current body of scientific knowledge, but also to improve the health and well-being of millions of people, according to Associate Professor of Psychology Robert F. Corwyn. “Sleep deprivation is a worldwide health, safety, and productivity concern that attracts substantial research funding and media attention,” said Dr. Corwyn. “The index and its success is a testament to Dr. Mastin’s creativity and penchant for asking good questions.”
Dr. Mastin is a valuable part of the Department of Psychology. He plays a vital role in student advancement by including students in his research; thereby providing student’s with research experience and authorship. As an experienced researcher, Dr. Mastin is always looking for students to mentor and train in psychological research.
Dr. Mastin earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi before joining the faculty at UALR in 2000. In 2013, he won the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) Faculty Excellence Award for Research and Creative Endeavors.
