“Power and Language and Bias, Oh My!”
The next “Brown Bag Lunch and Learn” presented by the UALR Diversity Council will be at noon Thursday, Feb. 6, in room G of the Donaghey Student Center.
The featured speaker will be Sharon Downs, Director of the UALR Disability Resource Center.
Downs’ presentation, “Power and Language and Bias, Oh My,” will cover life on the other side of stereotypes, the power of language, and our role in the power and privilege dynamic. Her presentation will include the showing of a brief, but powerful video, Clown, followed by a discussion of the film and its implications for the UALR community.
Downs has actively promoted full inclusion and diversity for many years, and regularly presents on power and privilege dynamics, universal design, and micro-aggressions.
The Diversity Council’s Brown Bag Lunch and Learn events take place the first Thursday of each month, and features presentations from faculty, staff, and students from across campus.
