Attending college was not the first thing on his list once he completed high school. In fact, Dr. Cox had prepared himself to go into the military, just like many other young men during the 1980s. Instead, Dr. Cox was encouraged to enroll into UA Little Rock and began his college career Fall of 1986, thus beginning a long road to his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his first year as an undergraduate he decided to major in chemistry, but realized that he didn\u2019t see himself in a long term career in chemistry and soon decided to go in a different direction. He then became a double major in radio- TV- film and English, before finally deciding on English as his main track. Dr. Cox completed his undergraduate career December of 1990 with a B.A, degree in English, with an emphasis in Writing. After graduation, Dr. Cox applied to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/rhetoric-archived\/graduate\/\">Professional and Technical Writing Master\u2019s Program<\/a> at UA Little Rock and was soon accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Dr. Cox\u2019s first year of graduate school, he had the opportunity to be the Graduate Assistant in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/writingcenter\/\">University Writing Center<\/a> (UWC). In his second year, he had the opportunity to teach two Composition II courses. From then on, Dr. Cox taught every semester of his graduate career, which continued to increase his enjoyment of teaching. Dr. Cox gives much credit to the University Writing Center for inspiring and navigating him on his path of teaching. Dr. Cox graduated from UA Little Rock again, but this time with a master\u2019s degree in professional and technical writing. While taking a year break before pursuing his Ph.D., Dr. Cox continued to work as a composition instructor at UA Little Rock, while also working as an assistant movie theater manager and occasionally teaching business writing to Russian bankers at Systematics, Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Cox returned to\u00a0\u00a0the Rhetoric and Writing Department fall of 1999 as an\u00a0 assistant professor. As a credit to his flexibility, Dr. Cox has taught numerous undergraduate subjects including Composition Fundamentals, Composition I & II, Introduction to Non-fiction, Persuasive Writing, and Theories of Rhetoric and Writing.\u00a0 On the graduate level he teaches Composition Theory, Rhetorical Theory, and has served on numerous Final Project committees. Dr. Cox believes that \u201cthe most important thing for a teacher to remember is that we are not here for ourselves, we\u2019re here for our students. They should be the focus.\u201d And by making them his main focus and their success his priority, he has helped many students in obtaining their degrees and moving on to work in careers fields of their choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By incorporating popular culture into teaching, Dr. Cox is able to make relatable comparisons that students can understand, which in turn helps the student to make the necessary rhetorical connections. Dr. Cox has incorporated various pop culture themes into his curriculum, but incorporating music is his most popular theme. His teaching style encourages the students to think critically. \u201cI want to encourage my students by getting them to write about things and think about things, and to not just accept things as they are, but to ask questions,\u201d explained Dr. Cox, when asked about his teaching goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although he may not have much time for hobbies, Dr. Cox has compiled an impressive amount of collectable figurines ranging from Star Wars, Sci-Fi, Horror and Fantasy. Anyone who visits his office is sure to be amazed by his collection, and it will definitely spark a friendly conversation. And as if teaching both undergrad and graduate classes aren\u2019t enough, Dr. Cox recently took on the role as author when his books, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schifferbooks.com\/chocolate-cheesecake-celebrating-the-modern-black-pin-ups-6158.html\">Chocolate Cheesecake<\/a> (Summer 2015) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schifferbooks.com\/chocolate-cheesecake-2-a-second-serving-of-modern-black-pin-ups-6158.html\">Chocolate Cheesecake 2<\/a> (Fall 2016) were published. For the past 17 years, it has been in the care of Dr. Charles Anderson, who has guided students in the editing and publishing of seventeen editions of the peer-reviewed student publication. As of May 2016, Dr. Anderson is retired after 30 years of service to the Rhetoric and Writing Department and the UA Little Rock community. Many of the students and faculty wondered what would happen to the popular publication once the Fall 2016 semester began, but to our delight we are happy to announce Dr. Barbara L\u2019Eplattenier as the new executive editor of <em>Quills & Pixels 2017<\/em>. She will teach the two courses associated with <em>Quills & Pixels<\/em>: Editing for Publication and Production for Editors.\u00a0Although they are connected, each course is a stand-alone course, and they can be taken in any order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Barbara L\u2019Eplattenier has taught in the Rhetoric and Writing Department here at UA Little Rock for 19 years. Attracted to the university\u2019s metropolitan location, she believed that working at such institution would allow her to inevitably improve the world: \u201cI am an expert in some things and I don\u2019t think I should keep that expertise here in the office or the university, but rather help improve the world.\u201d Through her grant writing course and now through <em>Quills & Pixels<\/em>, she will be able to continue to do just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. L\u2019Eplattenier teaches Grant Writing, a class offered at both the undergraduate and graduate level. She guides students in helping others obtain funding for their organizations through the course: \u201cGrant writing lets you change the world\u2026. It helps people survive, not only the people that my students work with but [their] clients; it\u2019s an economic driver in Arkansas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to teaching Grant Writing, Dr. L\u2019Eplattenier is also an editor for the <a href=\"http:\/\/wpacouncil.org\/journal\/index.html\"><em>WPA: Writing Program Administrators<\/em><\/a>. She conceptualizes this work as pedagogical, noting that \u201c90% of our peer reviewed manuscripts come back as a \u2018revise and resubmit.\u2019 So it\u2019s our jobs to take whatever the peer reviewer has said and put it in such a manner that is going to open up the writer\u2019s process rather than shut it down.\u201d With her expertise and ability to \u201cgive good feedback\u201d, Dr. L\u2019Eplattenier is the perfect individual to lead students on the process of editing and producing the next edition of <em>Quills & Pixels<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2836\" src=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/rhetoric-archived\/files\/2017\/02\/qp-204x204.jpg\" alt=\"qp\" width=\"211\" height=\"211\">Although this is her first time teaching the Editing for Publication course, the first of two courses with <em>Quills & Pixels<\/em> as the content matter, she believes that the editorial staff is doing a good job so far and is excited about what the second half of the course will bring. \u201cI\u2019ve never been an executive editor for a student publication like this. It\u2019s exciting!\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. L\u2019Eplattenier makes every effort to groom and produce good editors, who are able to see a piece of writing for what it can be and have the ability to properly converse with the author. She says \u201cI\u2019ve said this to my class that \u2018when you\u2019re a good editor, you have to see what the piece could be, rather than what it is at the moment\u2019, and that can be a very difficult thing; it\u2019s about being an expert reader. Dr. L\u2019Eplattenier explains, \u201c[Getting students to start] thinking about how you talk to authors is part of my job: How do you coach authors? What language do you use when your writing to authors? And thinking about ways [the author] may interpret that. Those are things I can\u2019t really do in grant writing, [and] really it\u2019s a skill that can be developed. [Both courses are] going to let me help people develop a heuristic for looking at work; whether it\u2019s their work or someone else\u2019s work, and talking about it. joined the department in Fall 2013, and I teach Online Writing Instruction certificate courses, rhetorical theory, creative nonfiction, and technical writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What attracted you to this program?<\/strong><br> I knew of the UA Little Rock Department of Rhetoric and Writing since the early 2000s. The department is well known as one of the first stand-alone writing programs in the country. When this job came open, I knew I had to apply. Working in a writing program that combines rhetoric, nonfiction, technical writing and editing was my dream. The PTW program has a robust history of excellence AND provides faculty space for innovation and creativity. You can\u2019t beat that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you have a favorite class or subject?<\/strong><br>\nWell, I do love online writing instruction classes. Seeing graduate students turn great ideas into online classes never gets old. Teaching teachers is an awesome responsibility. And I work hard to make my classes innovative and relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What hobbies\/interest do you have outside of the classroom?<\/strong><br>\nWhat? You\u2019re supposed to have hobbies outside of the classroom? This is new to me. In my \u201cspare\u201d time, I play games with my kids (8 & 2.75), do yoga, and read books not related to online writing instruction (just kidding on that last one…I read books about OWI for fun).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s a fun fact about yourself that your students or colleagues don\u2019t know about you?<\/strong><br>\nFor a brief period in the early 1990s, I thought I might become a professional golfer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your favorite quote from a writer?<\/strong><br>\nTwo: Norman Maclean and Annie Dillard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Favorite passage from Maclean\u2019s A River Runs Through It:<\/strong><br>\nOnce, for instance, my father asked me a series of questions that suddenly made me wonder whether I understood even my father whom I felt closer to than any man I have ever known. \u201cYou like to tell true stories, don\u2019t you?\u201d he asked, and I answered, \u201cYes, I like to tell stories that are true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then he asked, \u201cAfter you have finished your true stories sometime, why don\u2019t you make up a story and the people to go with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>“Only then will you understand what happened and why.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is those we live with and love and should know who elude us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Favorite Annie Dillard passage from \u201cLiving Like Weasels:\u201d<\/strong><br>\nI think it would be well, and proper, and obedient, and pure, to grasp your one necessity and not let it go, to dangle from it limp wherever it takes you. Then even death, where you’re going no matter how you live, cannot you part. If you don\u2019t follow the instructions in the FAQ, you may not be able to upload your work or have it considered for an award.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a look at the different <a href=\"#categories-bmark\">award categories<\/a> listed toward the end of the FAQ, and decide which one best fits the award for which you want to compete. The piece must have been written in a Rhetoric and Writing course taken between April 1 of the previous academic year and April 1 of the current academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"year-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can I submit writing I produced in a class a couple of years ago?<\/strong><br>\nNo. The writing must have been produced during the summer, fall, or spring semester of the current academic year. All summer courses are considered to be at the beginning of the current academic year, not the end. The only exception to this is for writing produced during the prior spring, but after the April 1 deadline for last year’s awards. You may submit that writing if you are still a student at the university during the current academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"cowrote-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can I submit work that I co-wrote with others?<\/strong><br>\nYes. As long as all the authors produced the work in the same RHET class, it is eligible. Only one author should submit the work, and all coauthors should be listed on the submission form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"name-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Should I put my name on the document I upload?<\/strong><br>\nNo. All personally identifiable information (name, course name, instructor\u2019s name, etc.) must be removed or redacted from the uploaded document. Make sure the file size does not exceed 10MB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"online-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What if my writing only exists online?<\/strong><br> If your submission exists only online, you should upload the cover page described in the FAQ answer \u201cDoes the document I upload need a cover page?\u201d as your submission file. On the cover page, you should include a link (or links) to your online materials. Remember that online materials should also have personally identifiable information removed or redacted. Make certain that your online work is accessible to the committee members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"multiple-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can I upload multiple files?<\/strong><br>\nYes and No. If you have multiple documents that you would like judged as a single submission, they must be uploaded as a single file. If this is your situation, please merge all your documents into a single file and separate them with page breaks. However, if you want to submit multiple pieces of writing which you want to be judged separately, you should fill out the submission form multiple times and upload each piece of writing as a separate submission (even if the submissions are in the same category).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"filetypes-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What file types are accepted?<\/strong><br>\n<strong>.pdf<\/strong>, <strong>.docx<\/strong>, <strong>.doc<\/strong>, and <strong>.rtf<\/strong>. All other file types will be rejected by the submission form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"filesize-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How big can my upload file be?<\/strong><br>\n10MB. The submission form will reject files larger than this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"categories-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the different award categories?<\/strong><br>\nAwards are given in eight categories, each described below. Each award includes a certificate and cash prize. Unless an award description specifically asks for additional materials, you need only submit the project or document you want judged. If you are unsure about whether your writing fits a particular category, please contact the Awards Committee chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creative Non-fiction Award: This award recognizes the best piece of creative non-fiction produced this year. A wide range of work–feature writing, memoir, oral history, autobiography, as well as others–are seen as appropriate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design Award: This award is for the project or document which makes the best use of design principles. This could involve creative application of visual principles, use of physical materials, or use of spatial arrangement. It might also include innovative uses of color or shape and pattern, or clever use of principles for organizing information. Creative visual or physical designs of narrative are also potential candidates (e.g. Eric Carle\u2019s <em>The Very Hungry Caterpillar<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Editing Award: This award recognizes the best editing practices, as well as editorial genres such as style manuals. Entries need not have been completed in a editing specific class; for example, a work done for a creative non-fiction class might be a viable candidate for this award. Submissions specifically showing editorial changes should include original drafts as well as edited versions, and should explain strategies used for the editing process on the cover page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First-year Writing Award: This award recognizes the best writing completed in any first-year writing course. These projects may include a range of interests and styles including but not limited to personal narratives, arguments, research papers, critiques, and multimodal projects. <em>Note: first-year writers are not limited to this category. They may submit their work for any of the other awards as well, if they choose.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Media and Technology Award: This award is for the piece of writing which make the best or most interesting use of new media and\/or digital technologies. If the project is online, a link to the online materials can be submitted instead of a document. This award is for digital projects only. Projects which make use of physical design (paper or other physical media) should apply for the design award.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Persuasive Writing Award: This award is for the piece of writing which demonstrates the best use of classical or contemporary persuasion. Pieces may include analytical writing, legal writing, grant writing, general persuasion and argumentation, or anything else that clearly demonstrates strong elements of persuasion. Winners will typically employ classical, Rogerian, or Toulmin models of persuasion. Sophisticated use of <em>logos<\/em>, <em>ethos<\/em>, and <em>pathos<\/em> is also typically evident in pieces in this category. Submissions are not limited to those developed in persuasive writing courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research or Theoretical Writing Award: This award recognizes the best piece of research or theoretical writing. Projects should be identified for one category or the other on their cover pages. Projects competing in the research sub-category should typically illustrate significant evidence of methods of research and inquiry, demonstrate exceptional ability to locate, evaluate and synthesize a variety of sources, and show responsible use of sources, including citations and references. In the theoretical sub-category, submissions should show an understanding of and reference to existing theories, as well as the ability to extend those theories in systematic ways.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical and Workplace Writing Award: This award is for the best piece of workplace or technical writing. Manuals, software documentation, help systems, charts and other data visualizations, reports, and presentation slides are some of the potential candidates for this award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"morecats-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can I submit my writing to compete in more than one category?<\/strong><br>\nYes. The same piece of writing may be submitted for up to two different category awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"overall-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is there an overall winner chosen from the category winners?<\/strong><br>\nYes. One undergraduate and one graduate student will be selected from the winners of the category awards to represent the best writing produced by all of our students this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"announce-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When will the winners be announced?<\/strong><br>\nWinners are announced as soon as results have been tallied and documentation has been created. Winners are announced on the department’s Facebook page and via the departmental listserv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"attend-bmark\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What happens to my writing if I win?<\/strong><br>\nYou retain copyright on your writing, should you win. Incoming freshmen and transfer students only need to apply for admission to UA Little Rock in order to be considered for most of our <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/scholarships\/\">institutional scholarships<\/a> (institutional scholarships are the ones that come from the university).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rhetoric-and-writing-scholarships\">Rhetoric and Writing Scholarships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Rhetoric and Writing has scholarships available for outstanding students who are committed to our program. Please consider applying by completing the application at the bottom of this page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the departmental scholarships listed below, the department has one shared with Mass Communication, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/rhetoric\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2021\/02\/Douthit-Scholarship-and-Internship-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arkansas Public Media Scholarship (formerly known as Douhit Scholarship)<\/a>, which comes with an internship at the KLRE\/KUAR radio station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The deadline<\/strong> for all scholarships for the next academic year is April 1. The awards will range from $500 to $1800. The Office of Development will provide the information and addresses of the donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-undergraduate-scholarships\">Undergraduate Scholarships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-david-and-lucille-chandler-scholarship\">The David and Lucille Chandler Scholarship<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The David and Lucille Chandler Scholarship honors the memory of David and Lucille Chandler (the parents of our former colleague Sally Crisp) and provides assistance for any education-related expenses, including but not limited to tuition, books, and fees for students pursuing or furthering a degree or continuing education in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recipient can be a full- or part-time student majoring in Professional and Technical Writing. Preference will be given to junior- and senior-level students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholarship will be awarded at the end of each spring term for use in the next academic year. Students who have already written about family topics will be given priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A letter of application: <\/strong>Applicants must explain how and why the student qualifies for the scholarship and describe how it will aid them in achieving specific career and\/or educational objectives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Need as established by FAFSA: <\/strong>Applicants may offer additional information related to need if they wish; however, FASFA must be submitted to the UA Little Rock financial aid office. It provides assistance for education-related expenses, including but not limited to the cost of tuition, books, fees and room and board, for students studying rhetoric and writing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Until the endowment grows, it will be awarded to graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is available to full or part-time entering graduate, freshmen, transfer, or continuing students studying rhetoric and writing. Their particular emphasis is editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholarships are awarded annually, when possible, in amounts to be announced in the spring The awards are contingent upon continued enrollment and progress toward the recipients\u2019 graduate degrees. Funds may be used to support any part of the recipients\u2019 education\u2014tuition, fees, books, living expenses, etc. The scholarship is renewable, but the recipient must reapply annually. It has a separate schedule, but please use this form to apply as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you an excellent writer with interests in education, healthcare, energy, and justice? Can you supplement your writing with photography, video, or other media? If so, we urge you to apply for a new scholarship\/internship combination affiliated with Arkansas Public Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re selected, you\u2019ll receive a scholarship to intern with APM to write and research stories related to Arkansas education, healthcare, energy, and justice. You\u2019ll also receive 3 hours of either internship or independent study credit in your Professional and Technical Writing degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, you\u2019ll gain valuable experience in professional media, which will supplement your writing or professional portfolio with artifacts from the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong><br>\nIf selected, you will need to accept the scholarship and commit to register for your internship credit in either the following Fall semester or the Spring semester. You must be a student at UA Little Rock when you apply, and you must plan on being a student in the semester you intern with APM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number and amount of scholarships attached to this project will vary, but we anticipate the scholarship amount to be $1000-$1500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eligible students include undergraduate and graduate majors in Professional and Technical Writing<\/strong>. If you are accepted for an internship, you can earn three hours of credit toward your major, minor, or master’s degree by registering for RHET 4191\/4291 (for undergrads) or RHET 7360 (for grads). Some internships also pay students an hourly wage or a stipend upon completion of the semester. Students contribute an average of 8-10 hours of work per week to their sponsoring organizations – approximately 140 hours over the course of a typical semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up a successful internship requires a close partnership between our department and your organization. Below you will find answers to questions that employers commonly ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When (and how) should we submit a request for an intern?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students register for their classes 8 weeks before the semester begins. Although we can place them into an internship as late as the first week of classes, it’s much better for you and your intern to work this out 2 months before. Mid-June is appropriate for the fall semester, mid-October for the spring semester, and mid-March for the summer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we locate and interview qualified applicants?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Send a description of your workplace, tasks anticipated, and the names of internship supervisors to the department, and we’ll circulate your information to our students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What materials are we expected to provide for students?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anything they need to do their job is up to you to provide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can we expect from students on the job?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students are encouraged to take internships that allow them to do the work for which they’ve trained, as well as stretch their wings in the workplace. Generally speaking, our students are excellent at writing, research, research design, interviews, document\/information design, and usability research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What support will the Department of Rhetoric and Writing provide?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will talk with you about our expectations, and will meet with your internship supervisor periodically (monthly, or shorter if needed) during the term of the internship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will interns be evaluated?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will be encouraged to evaluate your interns according to how well they’ve worked for you. On our end, we will ask interns to reflect on their workplace experience through a lens of rhetoric and technical communication and identify ways the workplace experience was similar or different from what we taught in our classrooms.
