class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Specializations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social Networks, Sociology of Technology, Statistics and Quantitative Methods, Photo\/Video Ethnography, Self and Identity, Mental Health, Africa & Asia<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Jiabin Fan received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Louisiana State University in 2022 and joined the faculty at UA Little Rock in fall of that year. Her research interests include social networks, new media, mental health, and science and technology studies, particularly in Asia and the developing world. In particular, her work attempts to shed light how the structure of social ties in concert with the meanings that inhere in social relations can combine to affect one\u2019s self-concept and psychological well-being. Her recent study investigates the way in which offline interaction, digital communication, and structural characteristics of personal networks interact with social support to influence mental health among college students in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the core aspect of her research, Dr. Fan also enjoys participating in interdisciplinary collaborations. She has been working with public health scholars to examine the community cooperation in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The project investigates the new forms of cooperation people develop in the face of disaster when they cannot easily come together in traditional days. She is a mixed methodologist. Her preferred methodologies are photo\/video ethnography and quantitative methods. Her work has appeared in various peer-reviewed journals, including Sociological Forum, Sociological Bulletin, and Journal of Biosocial Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Fan believes in service as well. She has served as an officer of the Arkansas Sociological and Anthropological Association (ASAA) and on the Southwestern Sociological Association (SSA) Executive Council. About one-quarter of graduates with full-time jobs were employed in social service and counseling occupations, most likely in nonprofit organizations. In these occupations, graduates deal with social problems that they explored as part of their sociology major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduates also work providing administrative support and management skills in a wide variety of for-profit organizations or in state or local government. Nationally, about two-thirds of those who said their jobs were closely related to what they had learned as sociology majors were very satisfied with their jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers place a high priority on hiring graduates with the skills that sociology majors bring to the workforce, such as writing, critical thinking, taking initiative, and creativity. Sociology graduates with backgrounds in statistics are also valuable to employers. Private sector employers envision sociologists as employable in personnel, labor relations, and social service administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UA Little Rock uses <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/careers\/handshake\/\">Handshake<\/a>, an online job recruiting platform, to create connections between students and employers. Human Inquiry at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She served as the School of Human Inquiry coordinator for the academic year 2023-2024, and has served as co-director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/atle\/people\/\">Academy for Teaching and Learning Excellence (ATLE)<\/a> at UA Little Rock since 2023. Most recently, Dr. Shafeek Amin received the 2024 CHASSE Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2015 and joined the faculty at UA Little Rock in the fall of that year. Dr. Shafeek Amin holds core research interests in migration, gender, race\/ethnicity, mental health, healthcare utilization, sleep, food insecurity, and health disparities\/outcomes in the United States. A dominant theme throughout her work is attention to social and cultural influences on population health and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Shafeek Amin is proud to be counted among the limited number of sociologists\/scholars who focus on the experiences of the Middle Eastern origin population in the United States. Her research examines the association between acculturation and health outcomes among immigrants in the U.S., with a focus on Middle Eastern (ME) Immigrants in the U.S. She is also interested in examining the relationship between duration of stay in the U.S. and psychological health outcomes among Middle Eastern and Hispanic immigrants. Her past research has been concerned with exploring the factors that influence the assimilation process of immigrants in the U.S., with a focus on Coptic immigrants\u2014a small faith-based sub-group of Middle Eastern immigrants. Most recently, she has focused on examining the health care utilization patterns among Hispanic\/Latino and Asian immigrants compared with those of Middle Eastern immigrants in the U.S. Additionally, she has focused on examining the psychological health of women among U.S. Hispanics. She is currently working on a project that examines the relationship between food insecurity and obesity among Middle Eastern immigrants in the U.S. Dr. Shafeek Amin\u2019s recent research has appeared in Ethnicity and Health Journal, Vaccine , Journal of Child and Family Studies (JCFS), the International Journal of Sociology (IJS), Journal of Family and Community Health (JFCH), and International Social Science Review (ISSR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Shafeek Amin is also affiliated with the Middle Eastern Studies Program (MEST) at UA Little Rock and served as the coordinator of the Middle Eastern Studies Program from 2020-2022. She is an active member of various professional and academic organizations. City with a bachelor\u2019s degree in physical anthropology and earned a master\u2019s degree and Ph.D. in sociology with a specialization in demography from Brown University. She has previously worked for the Mexican Census Bureau and at the Mexican Population Council as a research associate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research interests include population aging, international migration, and families and living arrangements. At least a week ahead of the official start to early registration, you will receive an email from one of the sociology program faculty members with your advising information. After you have reviewed the advising form, you may have discussions with your advisor by email, video chat, or phone if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must acknowledge you received the advising form and agree with it. Once you do that, we will remove any restrictions on your registration (advising flag) and allow you to enroll in your courses. You can register for your classes when registration opens, but only after you’ve completed these steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the registration period has already begun, and you have not received advising information, check your UA Little Rock email for an advising email. If you cannot find one, call 501-916-3173.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-sociology-students\">New Sociology Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you were not an active sociology major this semester, please call us at 501-916-3173 so we can set up an advising appointment. Please be prepared to provide your name, Workday ID number, contact information, and a brief description of your situation when you call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-internships\">Internships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Internships are a great way to network and get real-world experience. You can work with Dr. David Briscoe, our internship coordinator, to find an organization that best meets your interests and needs. If you would be interested in doing an internship, please contact Dr. Briscoe at <a href=\"mailto:dlbriscoe@ualr.edu\">dlbriscoe@ualr.edu<\/a>.
