February 21st, 2026<\/td>STRIVE Open House (Hybrid): Doors open at 10:30 am. Presentations will be from 11-1 pm. After the presentations, those who plan to stay will go to Jack Stephens Center to attend the UA Little Rock basketball game.

Between acceptance of STRIVE position and starting your engaging with your business mentor<\/td>New STRIVE teachers complete first portion of professional development in Google Classroom to prepare for on-site placement in June. Approximately 6 hours of time required. <\/td><\/tr>

In-person preparatory meeting on June 5 from 9 am – 4 pm at UA Little Rock. Help get you oriented with STRIVE goals, STEM skills, and how to dive in to your placement which starts next week!


Placement starts June 8th: teachers begin working in their assigned roles at their business placement144 hours over 20 days on site (assuming 8 hour workdays)<\/p>

  • 10% of time reserved (16 hours over 20 days) for working on developing a class activity or unit.<\/li>
  • 5-10% of time spent with different workers in the company to experience a variety of STEM applications at that location.<\/li><\/td><\/tr>
    • June 18 – 19<\/td>Onsite professional development in Little Rock. We will provide accommodations for participants who need lodging (eligible if driving more than 30 minutes). Daytime events at UA Little Rock’s STEM Education Center.

    • Thursday June 18th from 11 – 8 pm<\/li>
    • Friday June 19th from 8 – 4 pm<\/li>

    July 8<\/td>Last day of placement at your business.<\/td><\/tr>
    July 9<\/td>Final onsite professional development in Little Rock. We will provide accommodations for participants who need lodging (eligible if driving more than 30 minutes).

    September<\/td>Meet with your mentors to review assessment plan for your STRIVE lesson.<\/td><\/tr>
    September to November<\/td>Implement your STRIVE curricular unit with your students and collect data on its impact.
    Meet with your mentor to discuss reflection after implementation of your unit. <\/td><\/tr>
    December<\/td>Submit your mentor-approved finalized lesson plan by December 1.

    Create and refine your open house presentation with your mentor.<\/p><\/td><\/tr>

    January or February 2027<\/td>Submit your mentor-approved open-house presentation within 3 weeks of open house.

We are calling these STEM skills.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plumbers and carpenters use a huge amount of geometry, proportions, and record-keeping in their daily jobs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your marketing team may use computer-aided design to create graphics for distribution. They may also use statistical analysis of the impact of their marketing campaigns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positions like chemists, biologists, engineers, medical doctors, accountants, etc. may be easier to see the direct connection to STEM skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be creative! If you can reasonably argue that a teacher working in a particular area of your business for 20 days will make them have a better appreciation of what they can do in their classrooms to help their students be more marketable with their technical and problem-solving skills, we are open to working with you!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion-heading\"><button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggle accordion-trigger\" aria-controls=\"accordion-380-content\" id=\"accordion-380\">What to Expect<span class=\"toggle-icon\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div id=\"accordion-380-content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-380\" class=\"accordion-panel\" hidden=\"\">\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>STRIVE funding will pay teacher stipends for their summer placement!\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Businesses will need to submit a quote for anticipated costs of hosting a teacher for the summer. This needs to be done before the teacher starts on site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business need to pay teachers $2,016 for their 20 days on site (144 hours at $15 per hour). Business will then invoice STRIVE for this cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you require workers comp insurance for teachers to be on site, we can discuss how this will be handled (typically involves a temp agency, and costs can be carried by STRIVE if necessary)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The STRIVE team will work with you to develop proposed projects for one or more teachers.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is not a 20 day job shadowing experience. This is a chance for teachers to get their hands on experience to help them better understand the STEM workforce needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think about project that your company may need extra help with or haven’t been able to tackle yet due to person power limitations. If needed, we can shift forward or backward a few days to accommodate business and teacher schedules.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Starts on June 8th, 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ends on July 8th, 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teachers should get an immersive experience of what it is like to work in your organization. Hence hours of work, safety training, and other expectations need to be clearly defined and agreed upon beforehand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All teachers will attend in person professional development during the dates of June 18th, June 19th, July 9th and July 10th to achieve maximum impact in the classroom from the placement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10% of teacher time during the placement will be reserved for working on developing a classroom activity\/unit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5-10% of teacher time should be spent learning about other workers at your company. We want the teachers to see the diversity of jobs that require STEM skills, so rotating with 3-4 other workers for a few hours will enhance their awareness of those Lessons must be complete and approved by your mentor before you receive payment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payment of $1,500 at end of program upon completion of all requirements (after Open House in Jan. 2026)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$500 related to completion of your lesson in your class,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$500 related to meeting with your mentor to determine revisions to your lesson plan, completing those revisions, and submitting a polished lesson plan (revisions and approval by mentor required).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$500 related to attending the January Open House. We will work with you to try to identify an appropriate business placement partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous STRIVE participants:<br>Some STRIVE alumni will have the opportunity to come back as a mentor in the STRIVE program. This honor is reserved for our top participants who showcased top effort in their placement and implementation of their lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you participated prior to 2021, we welcome your application but preference will be given to teachers that have not participated in STRIVE in the past depending on financial opportunities available. If you participated in 2021 or afterwards, there is an opportunity for you to return as a mentor. Please reach out to the directors of STRIVE to discuss your interest in the mentor role in the summer or fall (for the next year).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you participated in 2020 (virtual interviews only), you can apply for a placement without mentorship.<br>Once selected for the STRIVE program, failure to complete your placement obligations will exclude you from participation in STRIVE in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not communicating clearly with your business partner or STRIVE team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Failure to comply with agreed upon schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Violation of safety or other business partner policies (filming when not allowed, discussing company secrets, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion-heading\"><button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggle accordion-trigger\" aria-controls=\"accordion-257-content\" id=\"accordion-257\">Selection and Placement Process<span class=\"toggle-icon\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div id=\"accordion-257-content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-257\" class=\"accordion-panel\" hidden=\"\">\n\n<p>STRIVE attempts to optimize matches based on your interests, skills, and geographic location with the needs of business partners. Hence our selection process involves an initial selection based on your submitted applications. The second round in the process involves an interview (usually over zoom, ~20 min) with a member of our leadership team. We then share successful applicant materials with our business partners in their area; those businesses may choose to complete an interview as well to ensure an ideal fit.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion-heading\"><button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggle accordion-trigger\" aria-controls=\"accordion-500-content\" id=\"accordion-500\">Funding<span class=\"toggle-icon\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div id=\"accordion-500-content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-500\" class=\"accordion-panel\" hidden=\"\">\n\n<p>For 2026, you will receive a payment of $3,500 for completion of summer activities, paid in two installments during the summer (see above). Their focus is to keep up with budgetary spending of the entire plant, including employee salaries, expenditures, maintenance budgets, etc. During the 4 week placement at the plant, the teacher learns about how problem solving skills taught in their class apply to jobs across the company by spending days with 1) a plumber, who uses fractions, proportions, geometry, measurement, and other hands-on math skills to complete their daily tasks, 2) a marketing and design lead, who uses graphical software to design marketing materials, 3) a worker on the assembly line that is responsible for packing quality control.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion-heading\"><button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggle accordion-trigger\" aria-controls=\"accordion-810-content\" id=\"accordion-810\">Example 2: Central Arkansas Water<span class=\"toggle-icon\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div id=\"accordion-810-content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-810\" class=\"accordion-panel\" hidden=\"\">\n\n<p>A high school biology teacher works with a biologist at Central Arkansas Water on a project that is trying to assess the impact of various land uses in the Lake Maumelle watershed. During the 4 week placement at CAW, the teacher learns about how problem solving skills taught in their class apply to jobs across the company by spending time with 1) a computer systems engineer to learn about processing information from the entire water grid, 2) a natural resource specialist, that samples water throughout the intake area and at various points within the distribution system, 3) a maintenance technician that is responsible for keeping the pumps running at maximum efficiency, minimizing energy waste through excess friction, and 4) an engineer that must consider how fluid dynamics influence the expansion of the water system when new developments are being built.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion-heading\"><button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggle accordion-trigger\" aria-controls=\"accordion-515-content\" id=\"accordion-515\">Example 3: Post Company<span class=\"toggle-icon\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div id=\"accordion-515-content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-515\" class=\"accordion-panel\" hidden=\"\">\n\n<p>A 7th grade earth science teacher is placed with a food scientist at Post (cereal) Company to analyze viscosity and its role in wheat cooking. During the 4 week placement at Post, the teacher learns about how problem solving skills taught in their class apply to jobs across the company by spending time with 1) a quality specialist, who must ensure that all steps in the production of food are carefully monitored, documented, and analyzed to meet internal and external standards, 2) an engineer to study the electrical usage and increase the efficiency of air compressors and LED lighting, 3) an electrician that performs maintenance on electrical systems throughout the plant, following appropriate safety and electrical standards to maximize the operational efficiency of the plant, and 4) the logistics manager that ensures all processes on site have adequate supplies needed to maximize plant output.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"accordion-heading\"><button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggle accordion-trigger\" aria-controls=\"accordion-352-content\" id=\"accordion-352\">Example 4: Airplane Production<span class=\"toggle-icon\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div id=\"accordion-352-content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-352\" class=\"accordion-panel\" hidden=\"\">\n\n<p>A chemistry teacher is placed at an airplane production facility, charged with a “back burner” project that they haven’t had the manpower for yet. The company has heard of two new techniques used to soften and prepare leather for use in furniture, and they want to test in house if these techniques produce a higher quality, longer lasting product than the process they currently use.
