Since fall 2019, Student Affairs has had an employee recognition program in the four important areas of student retention, customer service, leadership, and morale building. The program’s purpose is to shine a light on the talent, commitment, and compassion demonstrated by our staff. Nominations were accepted by peers and supervisors during the months of April through September. We are delighted to announce the winners for spring 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some plaudits from the nominations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gwenyth Sutphin| Student retention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Gwenyth has single-handedly coordinated ASL interpreters for students, going over and above to guarantee that deaf and hard of hearing students have the support they need to stay in school and to graduate. She is extremely passionate about helping students and her fellow employees succeed here at UA Little Rock. She is hardworking and gives her all to the students who go to the DRC to seek out accommodations no matter what their disability. She puts in long hours and goes above and beyond to serve this university. She is so very deserving of this and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following are some examples of the things she has done to advance services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. During the pandemic when all classes and departments moved online, Gwenyth figured out how to successfully provide interpreting services remotely with limited resources from her home. Also, as student orientation moved online, videos were created showcasing the services offered by the university. She ensured that each of those videos were properly captioned, a process that is tedious and time consuming. The work she provided benefited the orientation process and will have a positive impact on recruitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yuliana Barajas | Customer service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Yuliana is the Conference Services Coordinator for the Donaghey Student Center. She works with departments all across campus and the community to deliver the highest quality of customer service for each event hosted by the DSC. These events range from Student Orientations, Board of Visitors meetings, Blood Drives, Student Orgs, Cheer Camps, and the list could go on. Her and her staff are always doing whatever it takes to get the job done from flipping table setups to troubleshooting IT technical issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeremy Laxton | Leadership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Laxton has dealt with a lot of change in the last year. Admissions has had some employee turnover this year which left several positions open that needed to be filled. Jeremy has shown great leadership over his team, making sure that they could manage with the shortage of staff while picking up any slack in the department. Jeremy is approachable, and he offered his guidance to everyone and made sacrifices to help the team accomplish their goals. He has worked very hard to bring on the right team members to fill the open positions while also focusing on the current members of the team. All of the recruiters appreciate Jeremy as a supervisor and could not ask for anyone better in his position. His leadership qualities and skills go above and beyond the expectations of a supervisor. Jeremy is deserving of this award for all that he brings to the table and his dedication to our university. He is genuine and passionate about his role as Assistant Director of Admissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karen Hulsey | Morale building<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Karen’s consistently positive attitude is infectious. The positive outlook on whatever is happening at the moment extends to staff which filters to students, as well. Her experience and depth of knowledge allow the conversations with students to remain positive. She can almost always find a way to help a student. No matter how busy the office gets she never panics and never gets flustered. She is always willing to meet with students in person if advisors get backed up or a lot of students show up all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to removing barriers related to disability, he is also tuned in to other populations, including LGBTQ, and collaborates with others to address those barriers as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identifies creative ways to positively impact retention: Reed has established a program where students with reading-related learning disabilities get together regularly to discuss challenges they face related to access, strategies they have learned, and technology solutions that can benefit others in the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaborates effectively across units to help students persist: Reed regularly meets with faculty to consult on accommodations that are workable in their classes and speaks to faculty departments to help educate them on what the DRC does. He is a friendly face at many Student Affairs events, always promoting the department and making connections to the benefit of students. Reed has done a very good job as Director and deserves this recognition for his work with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reed has done a very good job as Director and deserves this recognition for his work with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hyginus-ukadike-customer-service\">Hyginus Ukadike | Customer service<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Hyginus is always one of the first to volunteer to help our students. He is consistently supportive, friendly, and respectful, as he focuses on helping solve problems with both students and colleagues, even when having a difficult day himself. His positive attitude and excellent work ethic help create a positive atmosphere in our department. Hyginus frequently goes above and beyond the required job duties to assist with university activities, department programing, and individual student needs. As one example, Hyginus is currently working with the Law School one day a week in order to increase access for those students as well. Hyginus can often be found researching new ways to improve the quality of services that he provides to students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a co-worker, Hyginus is easy to work with and is consistently very supportive of our student workers, and his fellow colleagues. I believe he is an asset to the university and would be an excellent person to be awarded recognition for his customer service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>H has been serving this campus and the students in it for nearly 2 decades and has not lost much enthusiasm\/passion along the way. He continuously goes above and beyond to help the campus community and does it with his trademark smile and friendly demeanor. If a student is lost or is looking for a resource on campus, he is ALWAYS (yes, I mean always) willing to walk that person to their destination so they do not get lost or frustrated. H’s warmth and affability are not limited to just students, he will often stay late if a counselor’s session is running late so they are not alone in the office after-hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not even a pandemic could slow him down. You can regularly find him wiping down tables and disinfecting frequently-touched surfaces around the office to ensure that it is safe for staff and visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what makes him an asset to CS, If he sees that something needs to be done, he just does it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These traits also make him a great manager to our support staff. Fortunately for us, he trains them to be welcoming, courteous, and friendly in order to perpetuate the culture we work so hard to keep up at CS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter the circumstances you can always count on H to be there and be a team player. He takes initiative and is always ready to do what is needed to ensure that the office is running smoothly and that everyone who interacts with our department feels welcomed and included. I cannot think of an individual more deserving of this award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the nature of our profession, I cannot go into much detail about this. However, I assure you that there are numerous students on this campus and at Bowman that H has advocated for. There are numerous instances of him connecting students with housing, lap tops, books, resources, tutors, food, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-karen-hulsey-leadership\">Karen Hulsey | Leadership<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Hulsey has shown time and again, the strength and unity that exemplary leadership can bring to a department. Even having worked in another department with the university, I have never known such leadership. Any mistake a team member makes becomes a learning experience for ALL, without any finger-pointing. If we get discouraged, she is our cheerleader and makes us laugh with her sense of humor. Ms. Hulsey knows how to get results, how to get people to listen, how to work with the public, and she knows financial aid. I believe I speak for the entire team, when I say we all have 100% trust in her knowledge, experience, compassion, and motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Hulsey promotes public involvement and Trojan spirit. Every time there’s an admissions\/recruitment event, she says, “Wear your Trojan spirit clothes!” When she works directly with the public, she is informative, concise, and pleasant. And just as she encourages us to do, she tries hard to make financial aid less “scary” for the students and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing I noticed about Ms. Hulsey very quickly is that her interest in OUR best interest is genuine. She makes us all feel valued and heard every single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>“Ask Karen, she’ll know.” – most common phrase of the day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve had the pleasure of working with Karen for the last two years as colleagues within the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. Karen is always quick to assist with anything needed and is a joy to work with. I appreciate Karen\u2019s openness when it comes to discussing possible improvements and implementing proactive solutions in the best interest of our students. Her willingness to share her experience and historical knowledge when it comes to UA Little Rock plus federal, state, and institutional aid has been invaluable in making positive changes within the unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of Karen, we have been able to provide virtual meetings and still allow for coverage of phones plus any on-campus visits at the same time. She is one of the key reasons we have had a lower turnover rate when it comes to our financial aid advisors and this kind of consistency benefits every student on campus. She empowers our advisors by providing thorough training and keeping an open-door policy that allows advisors to ask questions without fear of recourse. She genuinely wants the team to succeed and knows this is a direct correlation to our students’ success as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-yuliana-barajas-morale-building\">Yuliana Barajas | Morale building<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Yuliana is our Conference Services Coordinator for the Donaghey Student Center. She works with departments all across campus and the community to deliver the highest quality of customer service for each event hosted by the DSC. These events range from Student Orientations, Board of Visitors meetings, Blood Drives, Student Orgs, Cheer Camps, and the list could go on. Her and her staff are always doing whatever it takes to get the job done from flipping table setups to troubleshooting IT technical issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comments from others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sociology Club: “Sometimes the simplest things mean the most” Thank you for your help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PHI KAPPA PHI: I write to formally thank you and your staff for your help in making the annual induction of our new members a success. customer service, leadership, and morale building. The program’s purpose is to shine a light on the talent, commitment, and compassion demonstrated by our staff. Nominations were accepted by peers and supervisors during the months of August through March. Justin worked with IT Services and the Database company to help organize the transition to the new system. This past summer the amount of work he put into uploading data and make sure the office could access student information is immeasurable. In this current school year, he has converted a semester\u2019s worth of online content into accessible formats for several professors. The impact of this will provide current and future students accessible content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justin works with students and faculty directly and indirectly daily providing alternative formats and walks students through assistive technology programs to help them understand how to access materials. His up-to-date knowledge and guidance to students can make the difference between passing a failing. Justin\u2019s experience and knowledge help him identify many solutions to navigate the barriers that some students endure. Not only does Justin work with students but also with faculty often taking what seems to be a monumental task providing them with the accessible materials for their students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justin has been the DRC for over 15 years and the impact of his work often goes unnoticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-patti-light\">Patti Light<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I have witnessed an all-hands-on-deck leadership and customer service style with Dr. Patti Light. There have been several occasions where she has stepped up in a manner that put her on the same playing field as a Graduate Hall Director, Resident Assistant, or Front Desk worker to provide the best service for our students and staff members. I have seen her work the desk in the wee hours of the night to give a desk worker a break, I have seen her perform lock-outs (let a student in their room because they left their key), and work alongside our custodial staff to perform cleaning tasks. Specifically, during the Pandemic, she lead the cause in strategizing Isolation Rooms, Meal Deliveries, Package Deliveries, and Cleaning Schedules to provide the best service for our students. She has also coordinated the services and worked with our Dining partners, Health Services partners, and Athletic partners to streamline all of the needs of the students impacted by this virus. All in all, it is her visible commitment to her students and staff that prompts me to nominate her for the Excellence in Customer Service Award for the Student Affairs Division. All of our isolated and quarantined students that lived on campus since the beginning of the pandemic. There is something to be cherished about having a Director working in the division who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-linda-barker\">Linda Barker<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Linda Barker has served the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for over the past 30 years working with low-income, first-generation students and adults. Recently, Ms. Barker developed and submitted 6 federal TRO grant proposals to the United States Department of Education. If received, that will bring more than $9,821,435 million to the UA-Little Rock campus (five-year total) to fund college readiness programs for low-income and first-generation college students in certain target areas and counties throughout the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why the employee should receive this award: My time working with Ms. Barker has been an amazing learning opportunity. She serves as an excellent role model and mentor to all staff. And is actively involved and supports the professional development for all staff. She continues to push staff to further their education and goals. During the pandemic, the staff had a difficult time working with students and clients. Ms. Barker has offered different program recruitment strategies and has even assisted the team in their planning efforts to ensure the program meets all objectives. As a leader, she never complained about the effects of the pandemic and offered suggestions and assistance on how our programs can continue to provide services and engage the community safely. Comment from a student: ‘Working with Ms. Linda has provided me with opportunities that I don’t believe I would’ve had anywhere else. (anonymous)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emily-bell\">Emily Bell<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I have had several bosses and despite my anxiety of yet another one, Emily has not only been supportive of me at work but also through personal experiences. She has honed in on what makes each of us happier, and therefore more confident and productive. In a department with all women, she has been able to prevent the drama that usually comes with an office filled with women. She puts little personalized awards on our computers. Mine says “You are valued!” I can’t tell you how much I and we all need that right now. She has created fun things we all can do together such as games. We have a special board for when someone says something funny to us on the phone, we right it up on the board. She has created group chat rooms where we aren’t just “all business.” We have fun with them as well. I can’t say enough good things about Emily. I don’t trust people often, and I trust Emily. Everyone else has been right.
