<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m Suzanne, and I am a Donaghey Scholars Program student studying French in France this semester thanks to a partner program between UA Little Rock and the University of Orl\u00e9ans. I’ve been in France for about a month, and so far it has been an incredible experience. I’m living with a host family who is very nice, and it’s a really different experience from living in the dorms. My favorite part of studying abroad has been meeting all of the other students in my classes. Everyone comes from a different part of the world, and everyone speaks multiple languages, and that was something I could not easily find in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important aspect to mention is that my French is improving greatly. I am actually using my skills with native French speakers, and talking with them is very exciting. My goal is to become a future translator and\/or interpreter, and living here in Orl\u00e9ans is definitely becoming an important part of my journey towards that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town itself is about an hour outside of Paris by train, and there is always something going on here. Every weekend there is an event of some sort, and there are events for almost any interest or hobby you could possibly have. I have really enjoyed the mix of both tourist and French aspects in the city. My host home is in the downtown area, so each day I pass by the train station, which includes a mall and many little downtown shops and restaurants. There are the signs of globalization like McDonalds, Starbucks and other American chains, but there’s also lots of authentic French businesses too. I brought my roller skates here with me, and I have greatly enjoyed roller skating around the city and on the trail that runs alongside the Loire river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know a lot of people worry about assimilation into a new culture during their time studying abroad. I do not want to make it sound easy, it has been an anxious and overwhelming process at times. Adjusting to military time, metric measurements, and the culture here has taken time. However, after one month here, I can say that I am finally beginning to feel like I fit in with everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One final aspect I need to mention that I don’t see talked about nearly enough is the missing of family and friends while abroad. I’m not talking about homesickness necessarily, I love living here and I do not want to leave. However, I do miss my friends and family everyday, and I wish I could bring all of them over here to France to experience this amazing country with me. It is hard to keep working here and knowing that I still have 8 more months left until I return to the United States and see anyone in person again. Technology of course is very helpful. I FaceTime some people regularly and chat daily with others, but there will always be a small fracture in my heart, wishing I could have everyone I love in one place, instead of having them spread across the northern hemisphere. But alas, that is the common struggle of every international student at university here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That should not deter you from studying abroad, as any journey away from home will consist of those feelings. However, it is important to be prepared for it and have a plan for how to process those emotions. Studying abroad has been a great decision for me, I’ve made new friends and discovered another wonderful city to love. This is my first time outside of the United States, and I really hope that it will be nowhere near my last.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The Office of Study Abroad advises you to use a variety of resources to research your destination and determine what you need to do before departure. We encourage you to utilize a variety of resources, including the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Office of Study Abroad Website<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Program-specific materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel guides, websites, and credible news resources for your location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faculty advisor\/concentration department(s)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study Abroad Staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relevant UA Little Rock Offices (Counseling Services, Health Services, Financial Aid)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are a few of the resources that can assist you with learning more about your destination country, as well as provide you with general information on travel, health, safety, finances, academic policies, diversity considerations, cultural adjustment, packing, and more. You will greatly enhance your experience abroad by becoming well-prepared before you depart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of Study Abroad also holds a general, mandatory pre-departure orientation each semester for all students going abroad. The Agreement to Permit International Student Exchanges does not bind UA Little Rock to any specific program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of international student exchange agreements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exchange students pay tuition and fees to the host institution, and the host institution will charge exchange students \u201cin State\u201d tuition and fees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exchange students pay tuition and fees at their home institution so long as the principle of reciprocity is maintained.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-procedure-for-approval-of-international-student-exchange-agreements\">Procedure for approval of international student exchange agreements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Initiation and approval by department<\/strong><br><br>An agreement initiator (faculty, staff, or the Study Abroad Director) desiring to establish an exchange partnership for the purposes of facilitating student study abroad experiences submits a Proposal for International Exchange. Proposals for agreements under which students pay tuition and fees at the home institution must provide evidence that both incoming and outgoing students will participate in the program to maintain a well-balanced exchange. The approval must be approved by the appropriate unit directors (the department chair and college dean, in the case of academic units). The proposal is forwarded to the Office of Study Abroad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review and recommendation by the Study Abroad Director and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs<\/strong><br><br>The Study Abroad Director and the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs review the proposed agreement for viability and make a recommendation for or against approval. The proposal is forwarded to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review and approval by Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor<\/strong><br><br>The Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor reviews the proposed agreement.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the agreement is one in which students pay tuition and fees at the host institution, and the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor approves, the proposal is forwarded to the Contract Review Manager.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the agreement is one under which students pay tuition and fees at the home institution, the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor makes a recommendation for or against approval, and the proposal is forwarded to the Vice Chancellor of Finance and the Budget Director.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review and approval by Vice Chancellor for Finance and the Budget Director<\/strong><br><br>(This step is required only for agreements under which students pay tuition and fees at the home institutions.)The Vice Chancellor for Finance and the Budget Director review the proposed agreement. If they approve, the proposal is forwarded to Contract Review Manager.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Contract draft, review and negotiation<\/strong><br><br>The Contract Review Manager prepares a draft Agreement to Permit International Student Exchanges based on the template approved by General Counsel. The Contract Review Manager will work with the agreement initiator to transmit an agreement to permit the exchange of students to the exchange institution for review, and negotiation. All international agreements must be reviewed by University of Arkansas General Counsel prior to execution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Contract execution<\/strong><br><br>The final agreement will be signed by the Vice Chancellor for Finance and the Chancellor. We encourage all students to explore the options to make their study abroad program financially possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trojan Travels Scholarship is a scholarship offered by the UA Little Rock Study Abroad Office to help offset costs for UA Little Rock students participating in an approved study abroad program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please view <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/studyabroad\/study-abroad-scholarships\/\">other study abroad scholarship opportunities<\/a> from outside organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eligibility-requirements\">Eligibility Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students must participate in an approved Study Abroad program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students must complete one essay: a statement on why they selected their study abroad program and how it will impact their personal, academic, and career goals. We ask that this not be longer than a page in length (approximately 300 words). Drew Smith is the study abroad coordinator at UA Little Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Smith has 25 years of experience in higher education as both a faculty member and an administrator. He has several years of experience in international program administration at two universities and has advised study abroad students at both institutions. He has also led several student groups on academic trips to Western Europe. He enthusiastically believes in the importance of the study abroad experience for students. Dr. Smith also teaches courses in religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Smith lived abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland with his wife and three children from 1998 to 2000. He earned his Ph.D. in New Testament and Early Christianity from the University of Edinburgh. Study Abroad, at its core, is an academic-focused experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-study-abroad-coursework\">Study Abroad Coursework<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to applying to a study abroad program, all study abroad students are required to submit their Course Pre-Approval Form. Study Abroad will work with you to meet with the appropriate academic departments to do so in a timely manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-registering-for-classes\">Registering for Classes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Study Abroad will directly enroll you in the appropriate number of Consortium hours. The Study Abroad Consortium Placeholder Courses (CONS) allow you to maintain your enrollment at UA Little Rock while abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-study-abroad-transcripts-and-grades\">Study Abroad Transcripts and Grades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All study abroad students are responsible for ensuring that UA Little Rock Study Abroad receives an official transcript from their host institution. The Office of Study Abroad will accept an electronic or hard copy of your transcript. Note that your host institution may take longer than expected to produce your official transcript.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon receipt of the official transcript, Study Abroad will work with you to get your Study Abroad Course Approval Form and transcript to the appropriate academic department for final grading.  The final grades will be submitted to UA Little Rock Records and Registration for processing as UA Little Rock credit, and will count toward the student\u2019s GPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Office of Study Abroad at UA Little Rock seeks to find programs that allow students to experience an international experience that highlights and compliments their academic degree. Your behavior and habits are often the most important factor in maintaining your health and safety abroad. Please review the information below regarding health and safety to help inform your decision making while abroad. If you have any additional questions, please contact UA Little Rock Study Abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For up-to-date information on global health and safety, please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to consult your doctors for any additional medical precautions regarding your personal travel abroad. If you plan to carry prescription medicines abroad, you must bring your medications with official documentation. Each medicine should be in its appropriately labeled container and should be accompanied by the physician’s prescription and generic name. Do NOT mix medications or remove them from their labeled containers. If you have a chronic condition or medical allergy, you should consider ordering a medic alert bracelet from your pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mental-health\">Mental Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to prepare yourself mentally for the experiences you will have during your study abroad program. <a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/counseling\/\">UA Little Rock Counseling Services<\/a> is available to help any study abroad student develop a workable plan for managing mental health while abroad. The availability and quality of mental health services abroad varies among countries. If you have a medical or psychological condition that may require treatment while abroad, be sure to discuss this with your doctor prior to departure. Study Abroad is also available to help you determine what mental health services are available in your program location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-insurance\">Insurance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon acceptance into a Study Abroad program, all study abroad students are required to carry international medical insurance that is valid outside of the U.S. Appropriate coverage is provided through the UA Little Rock Study Abroad Office, or by your chosen study abroad program. It is important that you understand your insurance coverage before you travel so that you can fully benefit from the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-us-department-of-state-travel-warning\">US Department of State Travel Warning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Study Abroad does not support student travel, research, or study in countries that are under a level 3\/4 Travel Advisory issued by the US Department of State.
