These bridges link ideas and can help you avoid choppy writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-check-the-order-of-your-ideas\">Check the Order of Your Ideas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having trouble with transitions? Your text maybe out of order. Make a list of your main points and juggle the order so that one paragraph leads logically to the next. Then, add some transitions to help the reader move from one point to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-transition-words\">Use Transition Words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding a Point: furthermore, besides, in addition to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emphasis: above all, indeed, in fact<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time: then, afterward, later<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Space: next to, across, surrounding<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cause & Effect: consequently, as a result, therefore<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples: for example, for instance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progression: first, second, third<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrast: but, however on the other hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarity: like, also, likewise<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concession: although, yet, granted<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conclusions: to sum up, in brief, for these reasons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-repetition-of-key-words-and-ideas\">Use Repetition of Key Words and Ideas <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat the word or variations of the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>“I can never forget the year of the big flood. That was the year I grew up.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-pronouns\">Use Pronouns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>“College students can experience stressful deadlines and exams. They should not procrastinate their research and study.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-synonyms\">Use Synonyms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>“When you re-pot plants, use a high-grade potting soil. Plants need rich dirt in order to thrive.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-transitional-sentences-between-paragraphs\">Use Transitional Sentences Between Paragraphs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>“Usually the transition between paragraphs comes in the first sentence of the new paragraph.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Even though Eva followed all of these useful suggestions, she still ran into unforeseen problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because of these results, the researchers decided to try a new experiment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice that in these examples, the first half of the sentence refers to the previous paragraph, the second half of these points to the paragraph that is beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-linear-structure\">Using Linear Structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the thesis statement is established, the rest of the essay must “flow” in a certain way. How does this happen? First, it helps if you create an outline for the thesis. An outline gives you a visual plan on how to write your essay. The outline (plan) for a basic academic essay or a common five paragraph essay, is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paragraph 1: Introduction–thesis and three points to support the thesis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paragraph 2: Point 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paragraph 3: Point 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paragraph 4: Point 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paragraph 5: Conclusion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Argument essays tend to include informative background data on the topic, a bibliography (citing sources used), and refutation of possible objections to the argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-transitions\">Using Transitions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to make an essay flow is to connect the different section of you paper with transitions. Transition words (ex: however, therefore, additionally, thus, and also) or phrases (ex: for example, on the other hand, and in conclusion) that show a link between a paragraph and the one that precedes it. You usually put a transition at the beginning of the paragraph to connect with the previous one. They are common in English, but can be challenging for English language learners to understand. When writing, consider whether your audience will understand the idioms you are using, and, if necessary, reword your thoughts to be less idiomatic. gray<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Strong Verb<\/strong> – an active verb that adds special meaning to the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ex:<\/em> The wounded wolf crawled across the frozen field and struggled his way down into the den.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emotion Word<\/strong> – a word that names exactly what a character feels<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ex: <\/em>Annie felt pity for the orphaned kitty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sensory Word<\/strong> – a word that helps the reader see, hear, smell, feel, or taste something described in the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ex:<\/em> The spicy smell of orange marmalade came from Grandma’s kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simile<\/strong> – words that compare two things using the words like or as.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ex:<\/em> The goalie defended the net like a fighting tiger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tagged Dialogue<\/strong> – telling what someone says and letting the reader know who is speaking by using he said or she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ex:<\/em> “The snow is perfect for sledding,” Carrie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Special Tags<\/strong> – dialogue tags other than said that give clues about the mood of the person speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ex:<\/em> “You’re grounded for a week,” snapped Jason’s mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flashback<\/strong> – taking the reader back in the time to let him know something that has happened beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plot Clues<\/strong> – giving the reader clues so he can figure out the action of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Foreshadowing<\/strong> – hinting about something important that is going to happen later on in the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Surprise Ending<\/strong> – giving the reader an ending that will be a total surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Metaphor <\/strong>– comparing two things that don’t normally go together to make a special point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ex:<\/em> Thomas was a big ox who could move a piano all by himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Onomatopoeia<\/strong> – words that sound like sound effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ex:<\/em> buzz, drip, beep, crunch, Since your goal is to get as many ideas as possible, you ask yourself wh- questions: what, which, why, where ,when, who, and (even though it doesn’t begin with a w) how. And then you answer those questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this form of brainstorming, you act as if you were a reporter interviewing yourself to find out what you know or think about a topic. However, just as in other brainstorming methods, it is not necessary to organize your questions or answers. Write your questions down in whatever order they come to mind. Don’t worry about spelling. Just write whatever comes into your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following is an example of brainstorming methods using the wh- questions. The assignment was to write about “Something Old and Something New” and I decided to write about old and new job. Here I include only the questions I generated.  When you write your questions, be sure to leave space to brainstorm the answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is my job?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What was my old job?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How are old and & new jobs alike\/different?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why change jobs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which job do I like better?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What was the best\/worst about old job?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How long did I have the old job?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which job has better pay? Benefits? Working conditions?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is a job?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When did I change jobs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How did I feel when started new job? When ended old job?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How easy\/difficult to get new job?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How did it feel to go for job interviews?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why have a job?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Freewriting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In freewriting, just as in brainstorming, grammatical correctness is not important. Nor is it necessary to organize your ideas or think about main ideas or paragraphs. Just write whatever ideas come to mind in whatever order you think of them.
