Study Spaces

Study Spaces

The law library is a public library inside the law school. It is also the Pulaski County Law Library, which means it has reference materials available for attorneys and the general public. It is used by law school students, faculty; and staff, by attorneys and members of the legal community, and by members of the public.

As you use the library, remember that it is a public place. We are not responsible for personal items left at tables, in open carrels, at the computers, or otherwise within view and/or reach, including materials checked out to you or which you have removed from the shelves for use.

Public Spaces

Well-lit study tables on the first floor are open to anyone in the library. In addition, there are large tables and groups of lounge furniture on each of the library’s four floors which are open to all.

The Library is not responsible for personal items left at tables.

Computers

The library has two public computers all patrons can use. They are located behind the Reference Desk and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

To borrow a computer,  check it out at the Circulation Desk. A member of the library staff will log you in. These computers must be used only for legal research.

Resources available include internet access, Westlaw, the library’s catalog, and access to the electronic databases owned by the library. Research results can be sent to a printer at the Circulation Desk for printing. Charges for printing are 20¢ a page.

The library is not responsible for personal items left at the computers.

Open Carrels

These are single-person desks on all floors of the law library. Each contains a light a light power for your laptop. Many have lockers for you to store your items between classes.

First-year law students may apply to reserve an open carrel for an entire semester. Applications must be received no later than the first Friday of the Fall semester.

Any open carrels not marked “assigned,” are available on a first-come, first-served basis to students, faculty, attorneys and members of the public.

The library is not responsible for personal items left in carrels.

Closed Carrels

Closed carrels are available only to upper-level law students. Faculty members may request a closed carrel from the law library director. Attorneys and members of the public are not allowed to use these spaces.

To request a semi-private closed carrel, complete an application online.

Carrels are assigned in the following priority:

  1. Students with accommodation needs. You will be asked to provide paperwork from the Disability Resource Center that states you require a closed carrel.
  2. Bowen alumni studying for the Arkansas bar exam (spring and summer semesters only). You will be asked to provide proof of exam registration.
  3. Library or faculty research assistants. You will be asked to provide a copy of an email from the faculty member that confirms your employment for the Spring semester.
  4. Law Journal editors, members, or apprentices currently working on a law journal writing project (for example, a case note, survey or comment) who don’t have a workspace in the law review area. You will be asked to provide proof of registration in a Law Review class or proof that you are currently working on a case note, survey, or comment.
  5. Students enrolled in a course that satisfies the upper-level writing requirement, including appellate advocacy but excluding trial advocacy. You will be asked to upload a copy of your schedule from BOSS that includes the name of the ULW class (not just the course number).
  6. After all priority applications have been processed, the remaining carrels will be assigned to 2L & 3L students on a first-come-first serve basis (based on the time and date of the submitted application). You will need to submit proof of class registration.

Two students share each carrel, and you may request your preferred carrel mate. However, each carrel applicant qualifies on his or her own merit.  Listing a person on your carrel application as a carrel mate does not automatically qualify him or her for a carrel.  If your preferred carrel mate is ineligible, we will randomly assign you a carrel mate.

Once a carrel has been assigned, your key will be available at the Circulation Desk. Carrel keys are library property and should not be lent to another person. There is a $40 charge for a lost carrel key.

Assignments are made on a semester-by-semester basis. Your occupancy period ends on the last day of finals for the given semester.  At that time you should empty your carrel and return your keys.

Carrel occupants agree to abide by certain regulations, and a copy of those will be delivered with your keys.

The library is not responsible for personal items left in carrels.
