A Spanish soldier deserts from the army in 1931, only to find himself arrested by a group of local policemen. He is released and soon befriends a lonely, old man in the local village. Problems arise when the old man’s daughters come to visit their father and the soldier quickly falls in love with each of them

Based on a true story, student activist and Mexican-American Paula Crisostomo realizes the disparity in treatment of Hispanic students and stages a peaceful walkout in five East Los Angeles high schools in 1968. Along with the help of her teacher Sal Castro, Crisostomo brought the injustice of the public school system to the forefront during the heart of the Civil Rights movement of the 60s.

In an attempt to secure a sponsor, an unlikely group of Cuban refugees become a “family” as the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service gives families priority over others. In the process, a political prisoner who hasn’t seen his wife for twenty years and a disaffected sugarcane cutter fall in love. An excitable brother and a lovestruck cop contribute to the general confusion. The inevitable humorous romantic entaglements ensue as a final confrontation is set up.

Learn her story and how she helped to stage the peaceful demonstration against the injustices of the public school system in the East Los Angeles High Schools.

This program focuses on the negative message that today’s Halloween costumes are sending. With the majority of women’s costumes featuring words like “naughty” “sexy” or “wild” it sends a very clear message to women. The majority of this program will be visual and pose questions to the audience.
