The manuscript collections at the CAHC consist of paper documents, audiovisual recordings, musical recordings, oral histories, films, photographs, memorabilia, and born-digital materials from the personal papers, organizational records, and collections of our many unique donors.

William J. Allen, Jr., ecology records, 1950-1977
This collection contains correspondence, memos, news clippings, printed items, pamphlets, reports, proceedings of hearings and seminars, and studies about Arkansas’ ecological and environmental issues.
Fred W. Allsopp papers, 1888-1948
This collection contains correspondence, articles, bibliographies, deed and loan agreements, news clippings, and stock certificates, concerning Fred W. Allsopp’s management of the Arkansas Gazette newspaper.
American Association of University Women Arkansas Division and Little Rock Branch collection, 1917-1992
This collection contains materials relating to the activities of the American Association of University Women in Arkansas, which were composed of records from the Little Rock Branch and the Arkansas State Division.
American Society for Training and Development: Arkansas Chapter, 1977-1991
This collection contains Board minutes, correspondence, newsletters, budgets, treasurer’s reports, news releases, membership information, news clippings, and other materials relating to the activities and events of the Arkansas Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) from 1977-1991.
Advocates for Battered Women records, 1972-1985
This collection contains microfilm, correspondence, meeting minutes, director’s reports, publications concerning domestic abuse, newspaper clippings, reports from the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for the Sixth District and Little Rock Police Department, and drafted state legislation. These items were used to inform the “Advocates for Battered Women Documentary History” created on December 31, 1984.
Jim Argue papers, 1975-2016
This collection contains documents relating to Jim Argue’s career as a state legislator, primarily newspaper clippings, correspondence, ephemera, and subject files. Topics include charter schools, school performance, ARKids, and state commissions.
Arkansas Amusement Corporation papers, 1928-1973
This collection contains the business documents of the Arkansas Amusement Corporation, a company that managed several movie theaters in Little Rock. These documents include reports on income, expenditures, and personnel, as well as on general activities, the bulk of which covers the period of the Great Depression, World War II, and post-war years.
Arkansas Bowhunters Association records, 1959-2011
This collection includes minutes, financial accounts, lists of members, correspondence, changes in hunting regulations, announcements, and other documents relating to the Arkansas Bowhunters Association (ABA) and its activities.
Arkansas Briefs and Pleadings collection, 1825-1972
This collection contains briefs, pleadings, arguments, and statements, concerning legal issues in Arkansas before local, state, and federal courts and agencies. These files do not contain all the materials concerning the cases. The issues concern land claims, Native American rights, the Real Estate Bank of Arkansas, slave contracts, railroad disputes, marriage contract suits, zoning, and civil service suits, boundary disputes, etc.
Arkansas Broadsides collection, 1849-1969
This collection contains broadsides, educational programs, performing arts materials, fairs and festival programs, land sale notices, and advertisements. Materials cover such topics as sale of livestock, lands, and goods; concerts, dances, and speeches; accusations of libel and deceitfulness; public services notices; and business circulars from various cities and towns in Arkansas, including Little Rock, Van Buren, Hot Springs, Dardanelle, and Fort Smith.
Arkansas Conference on Social Work records, 1912-1975
This collection contains correspondence, agendas, minutes, reports, proceedings, programs, newsletters, news clippings, news transcriptions, and printed materials relative to the Arkansas Conference of Social Work, later known as the Arkansas Conference of Social Welfare.
Arkansas Constitutional Convention records, 1969-1970
This collection contains papers relating to the Arkansas Constitutional Convention of 1969-1970, as compiled by William Fadjo Cravens, Jr., a convention delegate. The papers include correspondence and memoranda, committee papers, schedules and reports, background materials on the convention movement and constitutional issues, and material from Arkansans for the Constitution of 1970, a group which campaigned for passage of the new constitution.

This collection includes amendments, committee proposals, daily convention journals, transcripts, roll call votes, and biographical material on convention delegates for the 1969-1970 Arkansas Constitutional Convention.
Arkansas Constitutional Convention records, 1979-1980
This collection contains papers, documents, and reel-to-reel tape recordings concerning the Arkansas Constitutional Convention held in 1979 and 1980 to replace the 1874 Constitution. It includes delegate biographies, county files, committee files, administrative papers, audio recordings of committees, and drafts of the 1980 Constitution.
Arkansas Enterprises for the Blind collection, 1939-1986
This collection contains materials relating to the Arkansas Enterprises for the Blind. It includes minutes from Board and Committee meetings, scrapbooks, promotional materials, news clippings, and photographs.
Arkansas Environmental Issues collection, 1960-
This collection contains reports, studies, impact statements, environmental assessments, evaluations and inventories, procedures, etc. relating to Arkansas environmental issues. Many of the items were generated under regulations from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Arkansas Ephemera collection, 1840-
This collection contains artifacts that are ephemeral by the nature of their temporary application. These items include buttons, sashes, ribbons, ties, and paper artifacts such as invitations and programs.
Arkansas Federation Of Women’s Clubs collection, 1897-1986
This collection contains minutes of meetings and conventions, constitutions and by-laws, reports, correspondence, photographs, essays & addresses, historical information, political histories of Arkansas counties, yearbooks, programs, news clippings, and other printed material relating to the Arkansas Federation of Women’s Clubs (A. F. W. C.) and its member organizations.
Arkansas Gazette business files, 1819-1983
This collection contains correspondence, financial papers, legal documents, staff files, and photographs documenting operations at the Arkansas Gazette, including its founding by William Woodruff in the nineteenth century and news and events at the paper during the mid-20th century. Significant correspondents include Fred Allsopp, J. N. Heiskell, Harry Ashmore, and Hugh B. Patterson, Jr., as well as articles and other items concerning editors and writers at the newspaper. Also included are letters and other papers from prominent newspaper figures outside Arkansas, including Richmond editor Virginius Dabney of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and H. L. Mencken of the Baltimore Sun as well politicians, artists, and writers. The files document many important events of the twentieth century, and of particular note are items concerning the paper’s role in the Central High School integration crisis of 1957-58.
Arkansas Governors collection, 1820-1999
This collection was created to expedite patron access to various materials on the governors of Arkansas. The collection contains a miscellany of biographical information, correspondence, printed material, newspaper clippings, political addresses, articles/essays, etc.
Arkansas Labor Archives Project collection, 1893-1985
The Arkansas Labor Project is an effort to document and present the history of the Arkansas labor movement to ensure that labor’s story will be an integral part of the Arkansas story. The collection contains office files, including minutes, reports, and official correspondence; published documents and records including contracts, constitutions and bylaws, newsletters, annual reports, histories and speeches; personal records of union leaders and members, including scrapbooks, letters, diaries, journals, and memoirs; and miscellaneous materials, including photographs, tape and film recordings, flyers, strike leaflets, banners, etc.
Arkansas Laws, Digests, Rules, Regulations, and Statutes collection, 1901-1976
This collection contains digests, laws, regulations, rules, and statutes relative to various state agencies in Arkansas. They concern licensing, inspection, taxation, safety codes, registration, certification, and other requirements.
Arkansas Ledger and Minute book collection, 1832-1943
This collection contains miscellaneous account books, ledgers, journals, daybooks, minutes, articles of incorporation, court dockets, etc. of various records kept by Arkansas businesses, government, and individuals. It includes records relating to the activities of Arkansas businesses, farms, colleges, churches, social organizations, and governmental agencies.
Arkansas Museums Association records, 1966-2014
This collection contains photographs, negatives, annual meeting registrations and packets, membership applications, press releases, correspondence, Awards Committee nominations and winners, and the administrative and financial papers of the organization.
Arkansas Music collection, 1858-1987
This collection contains sheet music for songs written or performed by Arkansas musicians. Included are multiple copies of traditional songs such as “Arkansas Traveler,” “Arkansas” (state song), and popular music performed by twentieth century musicians such as Johnny Cash, Patsy Montana, Glen Campbell, and Elmer Mikel (including a work Mikel wrote about the Greenwood tornado of 1968). Also included are drafts of music by composer Mark A. Kenney and “The Proclamation,” written in 1863 by a Confederate soldier concerning the Emancipation Proclamation.
Arkansas Patriotic Organizations, 1911-1966
This collection contains yearbooks, newsletters, and conference reports concerning patriotic organizations in Arkansas, including Daughters of 1812, Daughters of the American Revolution, and United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Arkansas Pioneer Branch of the National League of American Pen Women records, 1936-2015
This collection contains meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, brochures, publications clippings, press coverage, and photographs that document the day-to-day operations, Pioneer Branch events and contests, the Arkansas Writers’ Conference, and member achievements. There is also a video on the history of St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock.
Arkansas Poetry collection, 1914-1977
This collection contains poetry and short fiction pieces by Arkansas authors, about Arkansas, or published by Arkansas companies, such as South and West, Border Press, and Bar D Press. The collection includes anthologies, magazines, quarterlies, and journals; also small monographs or pamphlets (50 pages or less) by individual poets and writers.
Arkansas Political Campaign Cards collection, 1890-1988
This collection contains campaign cards and buttons used in elections related to Arkansas’s political candidates running for national, state, county, and municipal offices. Also included are materials concerning proposed acts, city ordinances, amendments, and referendums.
Arkansas Political Science Association records, 1974-1983
This collection contains correspondence relating to the affairs of the Arkansas Political Science Association, which began in 1974 with approximately fifty members.
Arkansas Poll Tax records, 1912-1962
This collection consists of poll tax lists with names of registered voters in various Arkansas counties
Arkansas Poster collection, 1956-
This collection contains posters relating to Arkansas people and events. These items are announcements of presentations and performances of Arkansas artists, entertainers, organizations, and cultural heritage events.
Arkansas Psychological Association records, 1952-1981
This collection contains meeting minutes and notes, membership directories, correspondence, newsletters, constitutions, photographs, and the administrative papers of the organization. It also includes information on laws and regulations related to the psychology profession, as well as reports on the activities of the American Psychological Association and other regional and state associations.
Arkansas Small Manuscripts collection, 1823-1986
This collection contains individual and family papers, political papers, business, government, and organizational records, subject files, and financial records from various individuals, institutions, and corporate bodies in Arkansas, with the bulk concerning Fort Smith, Little Rock, and Van Buren in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Also includes correspondence concerning the Civil War in Arkansas, judicial records documenting Isaac Charles Parker’s tenure as federal judge in Fort Smith, and political campaign materials from candidates for local and state elections.
Arkansas Union Labor Bulletin records, 1937-1983
The collection includes bound volumes of newsprint publications from the Arkansas Union Labor Bulletin from 1937-1983, excluding years 1946, 1948, 1950, 1953, 1954, and 1960. The early editions are especially fragile and require care when handling.
Arkansas Video collection, 1937-1992
The Arkansas Video Collection contains videocassettes related to Arkansas history, culture, and business. It includes promotional and home movie footage of Little Rock and Hot Springs, narratives of World War II veterans, documentaries on TCBY and Winrock Farms, material on Arkansas prison reform, and video footage related to the radio program Lum and Abner.
Arkansas Water Quality Issues collection, 1926-1982
This collection contains studies and reports relating to water issues in Arkansas. Subjects include materials on chemical analysis, water resource planning, channelization, flood control, dam construction, wastewater systems, stream run-off from agencies from the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology, the U.S. Corps of Engineers, United States Department of the Interior, Arkansas River Basin Commission, and other Arkansas River Basin Commissions.
Arkansas Women’s History Institute board files, 1983-2002
This collection contains legal papers, board minutes, financial reports, fundraising correspondence and research on fundraising, grant proposals, financial records, board and officer correspondence, biographical information, press releases and news articles of the Board of the Arkansas Women’s History Institute (AWHI). It also contains correspondence and research papers related to the AWHI Susie Pryor Award and copies of award entries, and various materials related to the planning and production of the exhibit and handbook (both entitled), “Behold, Our Works Were Good.”

This collection contains various materials collected by the Arkansas Women’s History Institute as part of their mission to collect, preserve, and increase awareness about the role of women in Arkansas history. Arkansas Women’s Intercollegiate Sports Association collection, 1966-1983
This collection contains meeting minutes, correspondence, membership and tournament records, and financial records concerning the Arkansas Women’s Intercollegiate Sports Association. This collection also contains official minutes and other information for related women’s sports organizations.
Arkansas Yearbook collection, 1900-1960
This collection contains Arkansas school yearbooks, including junior and high schools, colleges, professional, and graduate schools.
Chester Ashley papers, 1776-1939
This collection contains correspondence, legal documents, land records, deeds, title bonds, receipts, promissory notes, maps, and family materials relative to Chester Ashley, a prominent attorney, United States Senator from Arkansas (1844-1848), and early settler of Arkansas.
Harry S. Ashmore papers, 1947-1961
This collection contains correspondence to and from Harry S. Ashmore between 1947 and 1961, and printed materials, speeches, and news clippings.
J. H. Atkinson papers, 1870-1974
This collection reflects the background of history professor J. H. Atkinson. The materials relate to his teaching career at Little Rock Junior College and the organization of the Pulaski County Historical Society. Also included are his wife’s, Zora Atkinson’s, records on the Women’s Society of Christian Service and the letters, and the legal documents of the Atkinson family.

Bernie Babcock collection, 1855-1966
This collection contains papers dealing with the writings, family history, and public career of the Arkansas author, Bernie Babcock. It includes books by Babcock and other writers as well as unpublished manuscripts and poems, historical research, notes for articles, plays, and stories by Babcock. Other topics include a variety of articles on Abraham Lincoln, prohibition, and the women’s suffrage movement. Also included are exhibit materials and business records of the Museum of Natural History, folklore research in Arkansas, and the writings of the Federal Writers’ Project in Arkansas.
Carl E. Bailey papers, 1930-1986
This collection contains the personal and political papers of Carl E. Bailey, thirty-first governor of Arkansas (1937-1941). In addition to Bailey’s years as governor, this collection documents his terms as deputy prosecuting attorney, prosecuting attorney, and attorney general.

This collection contains the personal and politcal papers of Carl E. Bailey, thirty-first governor of Arkansas (1937-1941), including correspondence with prominent politicians such as Harry S. Truman, personal financial papers, business records, legal documents, and speeches. In addition to Bailey’s years as governor, this collection documents his terms as deputy prosecuting attorney, prosecuting attorney, and attorney general.
Carl E. Bailey personal and political papers, 1919-2014
This collection contains the personal and political papers of Carl E. Bailey, thirty-first governor of Arkansas (1937-1941), including correspondence, business records, personal financial papers, legal documents, photographs, and speeches.
Bailey family papers, 1934-1982
This collection deals primarily with the papers of H. A. (Ted) Bailey, who was born on December 19, 1900, in Bernie, Missouri. He married Madeline Bailey in August 1920 and moved to Arkansas in 1922. Ted Bailey served as campaign manager for his brother, Carl E. Bailey during his political career in the 1930’s. Ted Bailey remained active in politics, and he collected political materials from many state and local elections from the 1930’s to 1958.
Baptist Church Minutes collection, 1859-1942
This collection contains the minutes of various Baptist sects in Arkansas. This includes the Arkansas Association of Southern Baptists, the Missionary Baptists, and the Primitive Baptists. The minutes include discussion of churches in the Association, constitutions, financial reports, and missionary work.
John F. Barker papers, 1960-1975
This collection contains correspondence, the bulk of which relates to Barker’s career, news clippings, memoranda, pledge cards, transcripts, court papers, and testimony concerning John F. Barker’s work for Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1968 New Hampshire presidential primary campaign and his work as the special assistant to Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox (1973-1975). The collection also contains videocassettes pertaining to advertising, local government, campaign research, and Jim Guy Tucker’s senate campaign.
Dorothy Yarnell Barton Papers, 1889-1988
This collection contains personal journals from Dorothy Yarnell Barton’s travels abroad and life in New Orleans, personal correspondence including greeting cards and letters home from her husband George’s time living in France, scholarly writings from both George and Dorothy, and memorabilia from France, Ellington Field air base, and other areas. Newspaper clippings feature Dorothy, were written by Dorothy, or were collected by Dorothy and are organized thematically as she collected them. Many of the photographs in the collection are from albums of trips Dorothy and George took throughout their marriage, from their time living in New Orleans, and other family memories. Loose photographs include portraits of George E. Barton, Sr., George E. Barton, Jr., and Dorothy.
Don Bassett papers, 1964-1969
This collection documents the career of Don Bassett in the Arkansas Prison System, specifically at the Tucker Unit and the Cummins Unit. Bassett worked at these prisons during the prison reform movement pushed forward by Governor Winthrop Rockefeller. This collection primarily contains administrative documents and forms, as well as letters and memos. It also contains a small number of photographs, copies of prison-produced newspapers, and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings related to prison reform. Material formats include documents, photographic prints, and newspapers.
Bob Batty papers, 1944-1978
This collection includes books on American pressed glass patterns that Bob Batty collected and ledgers of his original notes from the book he published.
LaVerne Bell-Tolliver papers on The First Twenty-Five: An Oral History of the Desegregation of Little Rock’s Public Junior High Schools, 1961-2015
This collection consists chiefly of oral history interviews conducted in 2014 by Dr. LaVerne Bell-Tolliver for her book, The First Twenty-Five: An Oral History of the Desegregation of Little Rock’s Public Junior High Schools. This book documents the city’s desegregation of Little Rock’s all-white five middle schools, which included East Side, Forest Heights, Pulaski Heights, Southwest, and West Side, in 1961 and 1962. An initial twenty-five Black students were selected to desegregate the junior high schools, of which 18 were interviewed by Dr. LaVerne Bell-Tolliver.
David W. Bizzell papers, 1804-1979
This collection contains materials concerning the genealogical and historical interests and administrative duties of David W. Bizzell, Deputy County Clerk and Historian for Pulaski County. These materials include correspondence, legal documents, printed materials, news clippings, and microfilm.
Blind Women’s Home collection, 1933-1971
This collection contains correspondence, news clippings, wills, and other materials related to bequests to the Home for Blind Women (later called the Industrial Home for Blind Women and now the Trebing Memorial Home for Blind Women) in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Thomas Boles papers, 1858-1909
This collection contains correspondence, legal papers, and other material concerning the career of Thomas Boles, an Arkansas attorney, soldier, judge, and member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Boys, Girls, Adults Community Development Center collection, 1979-2020
This collection contains materials pertaining to the BGACDC in Marvell, Arkansas. Included in this collection are grant documentation and correspondence, financial reports, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, banquet programs, photographs, certificates, conference ephemera, and quilts. In addition, there are electronic monthly newsletters.
Vivion L. Brewer papers, 1888-1982
This collection contains the papers of Vivion L. Brewer, a Little Rock native who was a founder and chair of the Women’s Emergency Committee to Open Our Schools (WEC) during the Little Rock School Crisis. The collection includes Brewer’s manuscript, “The Embattled Ladies of Little Rock,” as well as Women’s Emergency Committee records and correspondence. The collection also includes papers of the Lenon family, concerning the People’s Trust Company and its restructuring during the Great Depression.
Bishop Robert R. Brown papers, 1957-1964
This collection includes letters, telegrams, printed material, news clippings, and speeches concerning the Little Rock School Crisis in September 1957. Brown, along with other religious leaders such as Rabbi Ira Sanders, spoke out against Governor Orval Faubus’ handling of the school crisis.
Dale Bumpers Gubernatorial papers, 1970-1974
This collection contains the gubernatorial papers of Dale Bumpers, thirty-eighth governor of Arkansas (1971-1975). It includes correspondence and subject files, state agency correspondence, governor’s office files, legislative and legislation files, speeches, 1970 and 1972 campaign, federal agency correspondence, newsclippings, and audio materials.
Robert W. Boury music collection, 1979-1987
This collection contains the musical compositions of Robert W. Boury, Associate Professor of Music at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UA Little Rock), which had been composed during his tenure at the university. Boury is a composer of symphonic works including concerti for cello, violin, and piano; chamber music; art songs; and mixed media works. The collection includes songs, commissioned works, the music for the UA Little Rock graduation ceremonies, music for UA Little Rock theatrical productions, and concert works.
The Byers Newsletter, 1964-1975
This collection contains issues of The Byers Newsletter, a biographical sketch, and a photograph of Merle Eugene Byers. The newsletter, published 1964-1975, focused on social, economic, political, and racial issues. Byers addressed many issues in the newsletter, from local events in Arkansas to national events and international affairs. Political and social issues addressed in the newsletter include: John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, racism, Communism, and health care.

John M. Carland collection on Calvin R. Ledbetter, Jr., 1965-2013
This collection primarily contains letters from Calvin R. Ledbetter, Jr., to John M. Carland. Ledbetter discusses diverse topics such as the Arkansas State Legislature, Council on Economic Opportunity in Pulaski County, Governor Donaghey, Robert F. “Bobby” Kennedy, David Pryor, U.S. politics, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Winthrop Rockefeller, and the West Little Rock Rotary Club. Ledbetter also addresses personal issues to Carland such as family matters and health.
Beth Cathey papers, 1917-1998
This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Little Rock social activist and feminist Mary I. “Beth” Cathey. Her collection documents the arts, environmental causes, journalism, politics, and women’s issues.
Civil War records, 1860-1870
This collection contains official orders, reports, musters, vouchers, forage records, supply lists, equipage lists, court-martials, etc. for various Union and Confederate units that served in Arkansas.
John H. Clark papers, 1892-1900
This collection includes arrest warrants, summons, writ of executions, etc. and political writings of John H. Clark. John Halsey Clark was born Dec. 27, 1821, and died Dec. 29, 1911. He served as Justice of the Peace for several years in Jenny Lind, Arkansas.
Judge Osro Cobb papers, 1928-1980
This collection contains correspondence, speeches, published articles, photographs, news clippings, scrapbooks, and other materials relating to the professional, political, and private life of Judge Osro Cobb (1904-1996).
Commonwealth Community papers, 1924-1938
This collection contains correspondence and legal documents of Commonwealth Community, a co-operative colony established in Polk County, Arkansas, in 1924. Also included in the collection are the papers of W. A. Gilbert, a Polk County Socialist during the 1930s.
Susan LaNell Compton papers, 1829-2002
This collection contains correspondence, photographs, family history papers, and subject files. Her papers also document her education, career in librarianship, and writings on the history of Arkansas and her Christadelphian religious beliefs.
Cynthia L. Conger papers, 1981-2022
This collection documents the professional life of Cynthia L. Conger, a prominent businesswoman, Certified Public Accountant, and financial planner in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was a co-founder of the financial planning firms Arkansas Financial Group, Inc. and Financial Decisions Institute, Inc., as well as founder of her own businesses, Cynthia L. Conger, CPA, PA and the firm Conger Wealth Management. The collection contains administrative documents, financial records, various publicity and media materials, professional development materials, a custom embosser stamp, as well as award certificates and plaques.
Florence Brown Cotnam collection, 1916-1932
This collection contains correspondence, news clippings, and miscellaneous materials concerning Florence Brown Cotnam’s political career and activities. Cotnam was the first woman to address the Arkansas Legislature (1916) and was active in the movement to achieve suffrage for women on the state and national level.
Harvey Couch papers, 1912-1981
This collection contains articles of incorporations, minutes, balance sheets, correspondence, and contracts, concerning Harvey Couch’s businesses, including Arkansas Power and Light, Columbia Corporation, and the merger between the Yorkport Corporation and Southwest Securities Corporation. It also includes correspondence and contracts relating to Harvey Couch and his businesses after his death, which were collected by Pratt C. Remmel, his son-in-law.
Cravens family papers, 1886-1982
This collection contains materials related to the political and professional activities of Ben Cravens (William Ben Cravens), a Fort Smith attorney and congressman.
Creation Science papers, 1981-1984
This collection contains papers generated as a result of the passage of Act 590 by the Arkansas State Legislature and by the “Creation-Science Trial.”
Woody Crockett papers, 1940-2011

Election Laws Institute records, 1970-1978
This collection contains materials related to the Election Laws Institute (TEL). Established in 1970 by Chancery Court Judge Tom Glaze of Little Rock, TEL existed to educate public officials about election laws and to serve as a “watchdog” for election abuses. As a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, TEL also lobbied for election law reforms. TEL dissolved in 1978.

This collection contains the correspondence and other materials of the Faulkner Family from the 1860s to 1953. The first part of the collection contains letters (original and typescript) from family members to Sandford, Jr., who went to California in the Fall of 1860. The letters describe living conditions and political affairs in Little Rock and Arkansas from the Civil War through the 1890s. Other files concern requests for genealogical information by Faulkner Jr.’s daughter.

Ed Fry papers, 1956-2012
This collection contains correspondence, memoranda, photographs, budgets, donor lists, convention planning materials and other documents concerning Ed Fry and his career as a Democratic Party operative beginning in the 1980s until his retirement in 2007. While the materials in this collection are overwhelmingly political in nature, Fry’s undergraduate work reflects an interest in Baptist ministry, and the collection also contains materials from the 1992 founding of a D.C. area Christian/LGBT organization called TELOS Ministries.

Fulton’s scrapbook is chiefly comprised of printed poems from newspapers, handwritten poems, and personal letters from friends and family. Conway’s recollections contains her handwritten thoughts and memories, focusing mainly on her childhood as she remembers family members, friends, and stories from her past.
Furry Family letters, 1926-1931
This collection contains the correspondence of the Furry family from 1926 to 1931. During this time, family members wrote about the Arkansas River Flood of 1927, the drought conditions of the early 1930s, business difficulties due to the onset of the Great Depression, and the education of their youngest son, Warren G. Furry, Jr., at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

This collection contains the personal, business, and political papers of John Edward “Pat” Garner, a legislator and journalist from Fort Smith. This collection also includes photographs of noted individuals such as Maurice “Footsie” Brit and General Omar Bradley as well as images of rodeos, cowboys, Native Americans, horses, and cattle.

This collection contains correspondence and legal materials concerning Little Rock attorneys Leffel and U. A. Gentry. Correspondence concerns Leffel Gentry’s role as friend and advisor to Governor Francis Cherry and his position as Democratic State Committee Chair in 1954. Letters include requests for employment, liquor licences, board and commission appointments, and discussion of the 1953 Legislative Session. Lawsuits concern the Little Rock Dunbar Redevelopment Project in 1952 and a Jim Crow era case concerning African Americans riding on public buses in 1949.

Hawks family collection of Rockefeller family materials, 1929-2018
This collection contains correspondence and ephemera related to Winthrop Rockefeller, collected by family friends, Graham and Marge Hawks. Notable items include thank you notes from John D. Rockefeller to Byron Hawks, World War II correspondence detailing a kamikaze attack that both Winthrop Rockefeller and Graham Hawks survived, prankster letters between the Hawks and Rockefeller, wedding photographs from an album of Rockefeller’s first marriage to Barbara “BoBo” Sears, a Winrock Farms cattle-breeding information packet, and photographs of Winrock Farms and Graham and Winthrop’s military service days. Also included is an oral history detailing the lives of Graham and Marge Hawks and their relationship with Winthrop Rockefeller told by the Hawks’ children, Ria and Graham, Jr.
Earl Conard Hays, Jr., papers, 1939-1946
This collection is chiefly letters written by Earl Conard Hays, Jr., while serving as a United States Army chaplain during World War II to his fiancé and wife, Florence Macon Locke Hays. The letters discuss Hays’ services and sermons, the state of the war, and the fastest method of wartime correspondence between Conard and Florence. There are explanations of several United States Army practices, including censorship, movements, and post-war demobilization.

This collection contains the professional and personal papers of Willie [pronounced Wylie] Blount Wright Heartsill, a Sebastian County court clerk, postmaster, legislative representative, and union organizer. Hillcrest Merchants Association records, 1995-2014
This collection contains materials pertaining to the finances, bylaws and operations of the Hillcrest Merchants Association (HMA) and documents relating to the Hillcrest neighborhood in Little Rock. There are financial statements, records of membership dues, and meeting minutes from the founding of the organization in 1995 through the first decade of the twenty-first century. Also included are newsletters published by the HMA and other organizations which document activities in and around Hillcrest. A portion of the records relate to the planning of the annual fall HarvestFest street festival organized and sponsored by the HMA. Correspondence between the HMA and the Fort Smith Trolley Museum documents a planned trolley restoration project. Photographic prints and negatives depict events hosted by the HMA and the interior of several Hillcrest businesses. Holman family papers, 1856-1897
This collection contains correspondence and business receipts of the Holman Family, principally William T. Holman of Little River County. Holman was a farmer and served as a captain during the Civil War. Other family members include H. B. Holman, sheriff of Hempstead County (1888-1890), E. J. Holman, and others. The correspondence describes cotton picking, church meetings, riding in horse-drawn wagons, and conditions in southern California. Also included are household recipes and business papers.

This collection contains two scrapbooks documenting school activities at West Side Junior High in Little Rock, Arkansas. The scrapbooks were compiled by West Side English teacher Eliza Hoskins. Household of Ruth records, 1896-1934
This collection contains accounts books (1922-1930) and record books (1918-1933) from the Fort Smith, Arkansas, chapter of the Household of Ruth. Established in 1856 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the Household of Ruth was a female auxiliary of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows (colored). The membership included widows, wives, sisters, daughters, and widowed mothers of the male members of the Order.
Max Howell papers, 1934-1996
This collection contains the political and personal papers of Max Howell (1915-1999), a prominent Arkansas lawyer and politician. His legislative career, the longest in state history, comprised four years in the Arkansas House of Representatives and forty-two years in the Arkansas Senate, where he sponsored over 700 bills. His papers include correspondence, club materials, Arkansas Supreme Court briefs, legislation and committee materials, General Assembly rosters and digests, newspaper clippings, photographs, and an interview series recorded after his retirement.

His father homesteaded the “Knox Plantation” and in 1830, George came to take up residence in Van Buren and take care of the plantation. He was appointed U. S. Marshall for the Western District of Arkansas.

Harry J. Lemley, Jr., letters, 1930-1945
This collection contains personal letters, postcards, and telegrams from Harry J. Lemley, Jr., to his family in Hope, Arkansas. Most items were written between 1944 June and 1945 September when Lemley served as an Executive Officer, VI Corps Artillery. The letters describe Lemley’s daily life and personal experiences as an officer in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. After the war, he stayed in the military until his retirement in 1971.

The Little Rock School District Civic Advisory Committee records is comprised of agendas, correspondence, memorandums, reports, surveys and community forum information collected by Elizabeth Lucker, a Little Rock school teacher and Civic Advisory Committee member, and Acadia Roher, a community engagement forms coordinator. The reports address issues related to budgets and budget cuts, district dropout rates, and LRSD academically distressed schools. The surveys reflect opinions and assessments from LRSD teachers, students, and parents. Little Rock Study Club collection, 1931-1971
This collection contains materials of the Little Rock Study Club which was founded by Mrs. Lester G. McAllister and was organized on January 4, 1926. The Club was federated with the Arkansas Federation of Women’s Clubs September 23, 1927. Mrs. A. H. Merrick was an assistant founder and donor of these materials to the Arkansas Women’s History Institute. The collection includes programs, minutes, letters, cards, and notes.
Litzke Family papers, 1930-1932
This collection contains the letters of the Paul R. Litzke family in Little Rock, the bulk of which consists of correspondence between Paul R. Litzke and his daughter, Paulina, while the latter was a student at the University of California, Berkeley. The correspondence makes brief mention of economic and weather conditions in Little Rock during the 1930s, but is primarily concerned with family matters and Paulina Litzke’s experiences in California.

James Mitchell papers, 1859-1900
This collection contains correspondence of the Mitchell family. James Mitchell was born at Cane Hill, Arkansas in 1832. He attended Cane Hill College, farmed, taught school in the Choctaw Nation, and in 1860 he was elected to the Arkansas General Assembly. In 1862, he joined the Confederate Army as a Lieutenant and served in the Trans-Mississippi Department. After the war, he returned to farming and teaching in Northwest Arkansas. In 1876, Mitchell moved to Little Rock and became the editor of the Arkansas Gazette. Two years later he left the Gazette and purchased the Democrat. Mitchell passed on June 26, 1902.

Raye Montague papers, 1933-2019
This collection includes records, photographs, and realia pertaining to the life and career of Raye Jean Jordan Montague. Montague began her career with the U.S. Navy in 1956 as a clerk typist. She advanced multiple times, eventually working for the Naval Ship Engineering Command, where she was credited with producing the first computer-generated draft of a naval ship.

The bulk of the scrapbooks are news clippings but also contain printed material and correspondence.

Sidney A. Newcomb films, circa 1926-1945
This collection contains 16mm home movies shot between roughly 1926 and 1945 by the Sidney A. Newcomb family of Little Rock, Arkansas. James Patton papers, 1822-1859
These papers contain correspondence from Irish emigrant James Patton (1802-1866) to his parents in Ireland during the years 1822-1859. Patton’s letters describe his American adventures of land speculator, teacher, and farmer while living in New York, South Carolina, and Arkansas. Patton’s letters also convey the loneliness of a young emigrant, his love for his parents, his Christian faith, and his pride in his Arkansas family. Mary A. Strong, who married Stephen Strong, a distant relative of James Patton, provided letter transcriptions.

The Pfeifer Family papers provides an overview of the influential Pfeifer family and their multifaceted contributions to the economic, social, and civic spheres of Little Rock, Arkansas, from the mid-19th to the 20th centuries. The collection includes the diary of Leo Pfeifer, documents related to the Pfeifer Brothers retail store, and materials related to the Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp. The collection also contains documents related to other Jewish families who did business with the Pfeifers, including the Cohns, Grundfests, and Stiffts, along with a VHS tape chronicling the history of Congregation B’nai Israel, to which the Pfeifer family belonged. Registers of Pulaski County Teachers’ Licenses, 1917-1940
This collection contains registers of teachers’ licenses issued, reissued, or revoked in Pulaski County from 1917 to 1938. Licenses were issued for state or county first grade, elementary, high school, junior high school, and vocational. Information recorded for each teacher seeking a license includes highest grade or degree obtained, teaching experience, knowledge of certain school topics, and examination scores. By 1923, the ledgers were separated by “colored” or “white” teachers.
Eva Reichardt Masingill and Pauline Hoeltzel papers, 1853-1989
This collection documents the activities of Eva Reichardt Masingill as an activist for women’s rights, state organizer for the School Improvement Association, and justice of the peace for Big Rock township in Pulaski County and those of her niece, Pauline Hoeltzel, as a professor at Little Rock University and active member of local civic and political organizations.

Collection contains nine videocassette tapes recording the public symposium, “Remembrance and Reconciliation: Understanding the Little Rock Crisis of 1957,” held on 1997 September 26-27, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Participants included: Annie Abrams, Elizabeth Jacoway, Sheldon Hackney, David Goldfield, George Wright, Joel Williamson, John Kirk, Anthony J. Badger, Roy Reed, James C. Cobb, Kermit L. Hall, Tony A. Freyer, and Michael J. Dabrishus. Speakers reflected on the causes of the Central High School desegregation crisis in 1957, race relations in Little Rock, and the lasting effects of the crisis on the public perception of Arkansas.
Pratt C. Remmel papers, 1897-1975
This collection is comprised of Pratt Remmel’s papers as well as Arkansas Republican Party records. In 1951, Remmel was elected to the first of two terms as mayor of Little Rock. He was the city’s first Republican mayor since Reconstruction. The collection contains organizational papers, mayoral papers, newspapers, photographs, and scrapbooks.

George Reynolds collection, 1928-1987
This collection includes correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, financial statements, and other papers relating to the personal, educational, political, business, and civic activities of George M. Reynolds. Correspondents include multiple governors and other well-known political figures from Arkansas. Reynolds was part of the group who, with Winthrop Rockefeller, formed Winrock Enterprises in 1954. He served as the company’s first president and later became vice chairman of the board of directors.

This collection contains Sarah Richardson’s journals, which cover a 47 year span with a 40 year gap from 1907-1947. Sarah Richardson was born in Arkansas on February 8, 1886, one of seven children to James and Ella Richardson, both of Tennessee.
Tommy F. Robinson papers, 1950-1992
This collection contains newspaper articles, photographs, correspondence, and campaign materials related to Tommy F. Robinson’s campaigns and career. Robinson successfully ran for Pulaski County sheriff in 1980, and he was constantly in the news for his controversial methods. He was elected to represent the state’s Second Congressional District in 1984 as a Democrat. He switched parties and became a Republican while serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Winthrop Rockefeller collection, 1912-1973
This collection is organized in nine record groups and includes materials on Winthrop Rockefeller’s life from 1912 until his death in 1973. It documents his activities before he arrived in Arkansas in 1953 and then as a public figure from 1953 until his death in 1973 and as governor from 1966-1970.

This collection includes the political papers of Winthrop Paul Rockefeller, seventeenth lieutenant governor of Arkansas (1996-2006). There are also subject files and personal interest materials on topics such as the Boy Scouts of America and the Billfish Foundation. Joseph Taylor Robinson appointment book, 1935
This collection contains a 1935 National Blank Book Company appointment book used by Joe T. Robinson while serving as a United States Senator from Arkansas. Most of the entries record luncheon or dinner engagements in Washington, D.C.; however, an occasional White House convention or personal party is recorded.
Johnnie Roebuck papers, 1981-2015
This collection contains materials related to Roebuck’s career in both education and the Arkansas House of Representatives. Included are court records, draft legislation, practice tests, news clippings, and materials detailing protests of teacher testing legislation. Also included are meeting files, research reports, legislative materials, and emails relating to Roebuck’s time serving in the Arkansas House of Representatives and as the Chair on the Task Force on Higher Education Remediation, Retention and Graduation Rates. A small portion of the collection is comprised of personal materials such as photographs and a book written by Roebuck.
John H. Rogers family collection, 1830-1905
This collection contains personal letters, land deeds, and speeches of the John H. Rogers Family including Horace Rogers and Josephine Jackson. John Rogers was a Fort Smith businessman and property owner and served as a U. S. Congressman from 1883 to 1891. In 1838, he sold the land to the U. S. Government that became the second fort at Fort Smith.
Rohwer Relocation Camp Cemetery Preservation project records, 2004-2015

This collection contains correspondence work papers, assorted printed material, news clippings and photographs related to the ministerial career and social involvement of Dr. (Rabbi) Ira E. Sanders (1894-1985) during the years 1917-1922.
C. Robert Sarver papers, 1928-1989
This collection contains Bob Sarver’s files related to his work as an expert witness concerning jail and prison conditions in the United States from the mid-1960’s to the late 1980’s. Most of the files address issues in states other than Arkansas, though there are materials related to his work with Arkansas prisons during Winthrop Rockefeller’s governorship, including the Holt v. Sarver case.

Bill and Carole Sherman collection of clippings on Little Rock Central High School, 1995-1997
This collection contains newspaper clippings about Little Rock Central High School from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and The Chronicle (published by the Quapaw Quarter Association). Topics include the desegregation crisis, the Little Rock Nine, fire damage to the school and ensuing restoration, the addition of the surrounding neighborhood to the National Register of Historic Places, and the 40th anniversary of the desegregation crisis and Bill Clinton’s attendance at commemoration events.

Rowland B. Smith Civil War letters, 1862-1864
This collection contains letters written by Rowland B. Smith during his first nine months of service as a Confederate Army officer. Smith’s letters describe the retreat from the Battle of Corinth, camp conditions, and the war in general.
Victor F. Snyder congressional papers, 1943-2024
This collection documents the political career of Victor F. Snyder, who served in the U.S. Congress as a representative of Arkansas’s Second Congressional District from 1997-2011. Snyder also served in the Arkansas General Assembly as a state representative of the Twenty-third District and, after redistricting, the Sixteenth District from 1991-1996.
Soviet Propaganda Poster collection, 1980-1981
This collection consists of eight color propaganda posters from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The posters contain Cyrillic text and depict illustrations of industrial workers, the military, and the working class. The Communist Party of the Soviet Union used these posters to promote patriotism, civil service, and increase faith and support for the Communist Party.

Trulock Family letters, 1837-1855
This collection contains the letters of James Hines and Amanda Beardsley Trulock and their slaves Reuben and Orrin. The letters were written from Georgia and Jefferson County, Arkansas, to the Beardsley family in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
James Guy Tucker, Jr., papers, 1821-2016
This collection documents the personal life and political career of Jim Guy Tucker, Jr., who served as the 43rd Governor of Arkansas from 1992 December 12 to 1996 July 15. His papers include correspondence, photographs, memorabilia, books, and audiovisual material from his time as prosecuting attorney, attorney general, U. S. Congressman, chairman of the White House Conference on Families, lieutenant governor, governor, and post-gubernatorial activities.
Silas Turnbo collection, circa 1905-1913
This collection contains typed and handwritten manuscripts of Silas C. Turnbo, including a history of the Confederate 27th Arkansas infantry during the Civil War and a collection of stories concerning life in northern Arkansas and southern Missouri titled “Stories of the Ozarks.” Also included are typed letters between Turnbo and publisher William Connelley.
Rebecca Allen Turner papers, 1840-1895
This collection chiefly consists of antebellum correspondence from William H. Allen to his sister Rebecca Jane (Allen) Turner, discussing William’s steamboat travels along the Mississippi, Arkansas, and Ohio Rivers. Letters describe boat travel in detail as well as the natural scenery and people William encountered. Letters mention family news and health, poetry and literature, Rebecca’s schooling at Steubenville Female Seminary in Ohio, and William’s encounters with Native and African Americans. The collection also includes items concerning Rebecca’s husband, the Unionist judge Jesse Turner, and Reconstruction era and railroad politics.

John Frank Weaver Civil War scrapbook, 1861-1886
This collection contains a scrapbook compiled by John Franklin Weaver of Fort Smith, Arkansas. The scrapbook is comprised of newspaper clippings and short stories documenting post-war recollections of the Civil War as well as several Confederate war bonds for various amounts. Most of the articles were written in the years directly after the war and present a wide range of perspectives and voices. Subjects include military engagements and soldiers’ accounts of major battles. Frank White papers, 1962-2003
This collection covers Frank White’s two-year term as governor of Arkansas with a few items dating before and after his time in office. There are also series devoted to criminal justice, boards and commissions, and casework. Political campaign files include lists of names and addresses of potential supporters and financial records, and a campaign sign documenting Frank White’s 1980, 1982, and 1986 gubernatorial campaigns. Much of the collection consists of correspondence between Frank White (often drafted by office staff) and his constituents on a variety of subjects. Gay White’s papers are also included and consist of documents related to Gay White’s role as First Lady of Arkansas and Frank White’s career as director of the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission (AIDC) and death.
Hiram A. Whittington papers, 1824-1834
This collection contains typescript letters of Hiram Abiff Whittington written to his brother Granville over a period of ten years from Nantucket, Massachusetts (1824) and from Little Rock (1827-1832) and Hot Springs, Arkansas (1832-1834). Whittington wrote about politics on the national and territorial level, social conditions, traveling, Cherokee Indians, and noted individuals who were a part of the Arkansas scene or visited the area.
Francis E. Williams letters, 1850-1866
This collection contains the letters of Francis Williams to his parents and other individuals. The letters include descriptions of Fort Smith, Williams’ work with the Choctaw Agency, the Indian trade, epidemics, trips to New Orleans, and the Civil War. Most of the correspondence is written from Fort Smith and the Choctaw Agency but there are also letters by Williams written from New York City, New Orleans, Nashville, and Boston.
E. Grainger Williams papers, 1958-1971
This collection contains correspondence, documents and printed material related to the activities of E. Grainger Williams, a Little Rock businessman, Chamber of Commerce president, and member of the Little Rock University/University of Arkansas at Little Rock board of trustees.
Harry Lee Williams Reminisces, 1950-1965
This collection contains articles that Harry Lee Williams wrote for his Arkansas Gazette column “Fragments of the Passing Years”, which appeared in the Sunday Magazine section of the newspaper. The column contained reminiscences of Williams’s childhood, the “old days”, and growing up during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Winthrop Rockefeller Institute records, 1957-2012
This collection contains a variety of video, born-digital, and graphic materials from throughout the history of the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute (WRI). It includes video reports from WRI and related organizations, video footage of the organization’s anniversaries and ceremonies, and poster boards presenting plans for socio-economic development in the Ozarks region.
Becky Rogers Witsell papers, 1966-2009
This collection includes research, handwritten notations, paint analyses, reports, photographs, financial records, and other materials concerning Becky Witsell’s interior restoration and reconstruction projects in various locations in Arkansas, including the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock, Historic Washington State Park (including the Block House, Crouch House, Hempstead County Courthouse, Monroe House, Royston House, and Sanders House), Jacksonport State Park (including the Courthouse of 1872 and the steamboat Mary Woods No. 2), Lafayette Hotel in Little Rock, the Moore-Hornor House in Helena, the Old State House, the Powhatan Historic State Park (including the Courthouse and Male and Female Academy), and the Smyrna Church in Searcy. Also included are newspaper clippings and articles concerning Witsell’s career and art exhibits.
Paul Wolfe papers, 1908-1976
This collection contains correspondence, photographs, postcards, and legal papers concerning Paul Wolfe who served in the Judge Advocate Generals Department (JAG) during World War II and in the Military Justice Branch during the Korean War. He became an Assistant U.S. District Attorney and was later elected Circuit Judge of the 12th Judicial District.

Woman’s Christian Temperance Union records, 1888-1981
This collection contains the papers of the Arkansas Chapter of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. It includes minutes, proceedings, yearbooks, annual reports, news clipping scrapbooks, printed material, addresses, music, posters, leaflets and handouts, films, and filmstrips. The collection contains both state and national materials on the temperance movement.
Catherine Wulbern collection, 1929-1934
This collection contains the correspondence of Catherine Wulbern, who was vacationing in Evergreen, Alabama, with individuals in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and other locales. Correspondence consists of letters written to Wulbern, including discussion of such topics such as daily life, condolences on the death of Catherine Wulbern’s father, a description of Haiti from a United States Marine stationed in Port-au-Prince, and Christmas cards.
