- Materials: Participants should bring notetaking supplies. All other materials will be provided. The instructor will recommended a textbook to participants, but purchasing the text is not required to make this course worthwhile.
If you want to jumpstart your ability to understand and support Spanish-speaking patients, this course is for you! This course is for students with little to no knowledge of Spanish. Nurses, doctors, pharmacists, therapists, administrators and other healthcare workers are all welcome.

Dr. Elizabeth Sotelo teaches Spanish language, literature, culture, and film courses at UA Little Rock. She earned her Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of Oregon, her M.A. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, and her B.A. in Spanish from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She specializes in Latin American literature and culture, focusing on 21st-century Mexican and Peruvian works, particularly in the chronicle genre. Apart from academia, her pastime interests include hiking, walking on the beach, drinking a good cup of coffee, and playing chess.

Victor Haislop has taught at UA Little Rock for 26 years. He holds a B.A. degree from Seton Hall University, an M.A. in Foreign Languages from West Virginia University and an M.B.A. from West Virginia University. Victor is a native West Virginian. His interests deal mainly with Spanish language, culture, history, and food, as well as Spain, Real Madrid, and 19th century literature. He also works as an interpreter at a local hospital.
Victor lived in Spain for several years after college. He returns every year with his wife, Mercedes, and their six bilingual children.

Mercedes Rodríguez teaches first- and second-year Spanish as well as advanced courses in conversation and interpersonal communication at UA Little Rock. Originally from Spain, Rodríguez received a Ph.D. (ABD) in Art History (Contemporary Architecture) from Universidad Complutense of Madrid, then attended West Virginia University, where she completed an M.A. in Spanish. She also currently teaches Medical Spanish at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
She and her husband, Victor, have six children. They travel to Spain each summer to visit family and to ensure that the children continue to be fluent in both Spanish and English.
