Assistant United States Attorneys are responsible for legal research and writing, directing investigations, case development, and case presentation and resolution in criminal cases. Criminal cases cover a wide range of areas including drug and violent crime, gang prosecutions, firearms, death penalty, computer crime, terrorism, public corruption, financial institution fraud, environmental crime, health care fraud, identity theft, asset forfeiture, bankruptcy fraud, pornography, interstate child exploitation and general crimes.
Each candidate must have as a minimum, a J.D. degree, and he/she must be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any state, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and have at least 3 years trial attorney experience. Applicants must be active members in good standing of the bar. Applicants should have superior research, writing and oral advocacy abilities, strong academic credentials and good judgment.
This is a full-time, 14 month TERM appointment. This appointment may be extended or made permanent without further competition.
All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
United States citizenship is required.
