UALR Spotlights Undergraduate Research at Monday Expo

More than 65 UALR undergraduate researchers presented explanations of their study this week at the Undergraduate Research Expo. The projects focused on topics as varied as 17th century domestic crime to cutting-edge biochemistry searches for a vaccine for anthrax. ashleyOne of the researchers, senior Ashley Scott of Little Rock, was selected last week to receive the 2008 American Society for Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship. She will receive a $4,000 stipend for 10 weeks of summer research and $1,000 travel expenses to present her research to the ASM General Meeting in Philadelphia in the fall. “The Undergraduate Research Expo showcases and encourages research and creative endeavors by UALR undergraduates in all disciplines, provides a venue that supports UALR’s combined educational and research missions, and allows students to exchange ideas in a professional setting,” said Dr. Gail Hughes of the Department of Educational Leadership. She is chair of the UALR Undergraduate Research Committee that organized the event. The top projects will be nominated for presentation in Washington, D.C., at the annual “Posters on the Hill” event organized by the Council on Undergraduate Research.
