UTV, YouTube Highlight UALR Art Installation

UALR’s University TV, Channel 62, has posted on YouTube.com a video feature about the creation of the art exhibit “Stacking Order” currently showing at UALR’s Gallery I through Oct. 9. The video short provides insight behind the exhibit and the artists who constructed it on-site.”Stacking Order,” a cutting-edge, monumental sculpture exhibit, features the works of Chris Fennell of Birmingham, Ala., and Christine Lee, of Oakland, Calif. Gallery Director Brad Cushman said the artists created their works to fit the spaces where they are exhibited. When the show closes, the artists dismantle the works, which are built from discarded objects. “Chris builds architectural skeletons from discarded objects. His work is site specific, he typically creates a work in response to a local landscape or architectural space,” Cushman said. “The materials he uses have been cast out by society, for example, demolished barns, wooden doors, broken bicycles, and downed trees. He transforms these objects into dynamic shapes which mirror images of waves, tornadoes, and flames.” Lee’s exhibit includes sculptures using cedar shims – 635 pounds of them – that were shipped to the gallery. “Christine creates site-specific works by stacking the wooden shims into irregular wall structures.  She, like Fennell, works with a skeletal infrastructure as a support for her work,” Cushman said. “Both artists spend a considerable amount of time manipulating and rearranging materials.” Admission to the exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Cushman at 501.569.8977. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m.
