Deadline Approaches for UALR’s Donaghey Scholars Program

UALR’s Donaghey Scholars Program is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 academic year. Applications will be accepted through March 1. Current college students, as well as incoming freshman, are eligible to apply for the honors program. The Donaghey Scholars Program provides a distinctive learning environment for undergraduate studies, offering a generous financial package, interdisciplinary core curriculum, study abroad opportunities, and a supportive community. The program replaces the University’s core courses with an interdisciplinary curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking through the reading of primary texts, writing, and discussion. As the campus-wide honors program, the Donaghey Scholars Program builds a strong foundation for students to pursue their major areas of study at UALR. Donaghey Scholars receive a substantial financial package totaling between $45,000-$70,000 that includes full tuition, fees, and a generous stipend. Scholarship amounts may vary for resident and non-resident students. Each year, approximately 20-25 students are admitted into the Donaghey Scholars Program. An admissions committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students review applications and select promising applicants for interviews. No minimum standard requirements are needed to be admitted to the program, but the following factors are considered in the selection process:

• High school performance (coursework and GPA)
• Extra-curricular activities and community involvement
• Test scores (ACT or SAT)
• Recommendations
• Demonstrated ability in college (if applicable)
• Written essays
• Personal interviews
