Celebrate Earth Day Early with Litter Pick-up at Coleman Creek

The UALR Sustainability Committee has planned several campus events in advance of its celebration of Earth Day, including the Coleman Creek Litter Pick-up on Tuesday, April 16.

The event is in collaboration with Keep Arkansas Beautiful campaign, part of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.

The event will start at noon at the bridge near the UALR parking deck. The Department of Parks and Tourism will provide snacks, T-shirts and other necessary supplies.

Coleman Creek runs the entire length of the UALR campus and is part of the regional drainage system that eventually empties into the Fourche Creek wetlands immediately south of campus. The Sustainability Committee, following the lead of UALR Chancellor Joel E. Anderson, hopes others will join them in helping Coleman Creek to become the centerpiece of the UALR campus and a natural resource for the surrounding community.

In addition to Tuesday’s litter pick up, additional Pre-Earth Day activities include:

• Monday, April 15–Earth Art on the sidewalks. Meet at 1 p.m. between the Donaghey Student Center and Student Success Center.

• Wednesday, April 17–Sustainable movies in the dorms. Each residence hall will show a movie at night.

• Thursday, April 18–Camping at UALR. Equipment will be available through Campus Recreation.

• Friday, April 19–Garden day (BYOC–bring your own compost). Meet on the bridge, walk to James Worth property at noon.

A celebration of Earth Day, April 22, will include recycling and other activities from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. across the UALR campus. For more details, contact Sustainability Committee Member Kathleen Becker at kgbecker@ualr.edu.
