Law Grad Named to Arkansas Writers Hall of Fame

UALR law graduate Victor A. “Vic” Fleming will be inducted into the Arkansas Writers’ Hall of Fame next month, adding to his skills as a Little Rock judge and crossword puzzle creator. “I don’t recall a time when I did not want to be a writer,” Fleming said. A native of Jackson, Miss., Fleming entered the William H. Bowen School of Law in 1975 after earning a degree in English from Davidson College in North Carolina. He was executive editor of the UALR Law Journal and currently teaches a course on the law and literature at the Bowen School. An op-ed piece he wrote for the Arkansas Gazette in 1984 became the nucleus for his 1989 book, Real Lawyers Do Change Their Briefs. It also prompted him to begin a column in the Arkansas Bar Association’s quarterly, The Arkansas Lawyer. “Law, Literature & Laughter” was a regular feature of the periodical from 1984 to 1999. Since 1993, he has written “I Swear,” a column in The Daily Record of Pulaski County. Fleming began constructing crossword puzzles in 2003 and, so far, nine have been published in the New York Times and other publications. His original song was performed in the 2006 documentary film Wordplay.
