South Indian Musician to Perform

Dr. K.S. Subramaniam, an ethnomusicologist and performer of the veena, a South Indian plucked-string instrument, will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building. The event is free and open to the public. Subramaniam plans to accompany his performance with a talk titled “Veena – the Ancient Stringed Instrument of India – Its History and Decline and the Attempts to Revive It.” In addition, he will meet with Dr. Rolf Groesbeck’s non-western music class at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Fine Arts Room 112 and talk about “Tools of Improvisation in South Indian Music.” Subramaniam holds a doctorate in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.
