Educators in several UALR colleges are working together to recruit more science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) undergraduate students into teacher prep programs with the goal of adding teachers in these critical areas at public schools.

Jessica Hartman of Conway, a UALR senior majoring in chemistry, was a two-time winner at the recent Arkansas Academy of Science at Southern Arkansas University.
Little Rock Central High School Team 2 won first place in the senior high division of the Arkansas Science Olympiad hosted by UALR Saturday, April 14. LISA Academy placed first among middle school teams. The Arkansas state competition is sponsored by UALR’s College of Science and Mathematics, the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology (EIT), and College of the Ouachitas.

Stephen Kirchner and James Taylor, students in UALR’s Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology, won first place in the design contest at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Region 5 Annual Conference April 20 and 21 in Tulsa, Okla.
UALR will host the Arkansas Science Olympiad Saturday, April 14, offering middle and high school students and their schools a chance to participate in the National Science Olympiad in Orlando, Fla.
Nobel Laureate David Gross, who with two others won the 2004 physics prize for explaining how the elementary constituents of the atomic nucleus are bound together, will lecture at UALR 4 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in Dickinson Hall Auditorium.
H. Watt Gregory III, a partner in Kutak Rock LLP which helps its clients with their emerging technology needs, was honored Tuesday, March 27, as the 2012 recipient of UALR’s Fribourgh Award.
